MASS INTENTIONS FOR THE WEEK

October 3rd, 2021 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Today we celebrate 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time and Respect Life Sunday. Each October is set aside by the bishops of the United States as Respect Life Month, a time to reflect on life issues and to pray for and promote greater respect for all human life. This year’s theme is “Every Life: Cherished, Chosen, Sent”

Every person is made in God’s image and likeness, and is loved by Him and called to eternal union with Him. We are also created to be in communion with and depend upon, one another. We

are all called to walk in God’s ways and treat each other according to the truth of His perfect love for every person. We are cherished, chosen, and sent by God to love one another as He loves us. In doing so, we help build a culture that cherishes all human life. Building a culture of life is simply part of who we are as Christians, as followers of Christ.

We must give witness to the Gospel of Life and evangelize through our lives. We must

personally engage others and share the truth about human life. We must continue to show love and mercy, especially with those who have been involved in abortion. All members of the Church can bring healing to the world by upholding the beauty of human life and God’s unfailing mercy. We have to protect life from conception to natural death. Life is the greatest gift from God. Human beings are made in the image and likeness of God. That image cannot be destroyed.

Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI: "We are not some casual meaningless product of evolution. Each of us is the result of a thought of God. Each of us is willed, each of us is loved, each of us is necessary."

In today’s Gospel Jesus says: “… from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. So they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must separate...”

All sacraments have lasting value, and the sacrament of marriage has lasting value. The couple’s promise to each other is until death, to be faithful to each other always, and that is why Jesus rules out divorce in today’s Gospel. He said it was not in God’s plan, it was introduced by humans because they lowered their vision of marriage and drifted away from God’s plan for marriage. The couple’s fidelity to each other symbolizes and reflects the faithfulness of God to us his people, the faithfulness of Christ to the Church. God is always faithful to us his people, Christ is always faithful to the Church and the couple’s promise to be always faithful to each other until death symbolizes and reflects the love of God for his people and the love of Christ for his Church. This is another way in which we see marriage in the Catholic Church is a sacrament. Like all the sacraments, marriage unites the couple with Jesus, and brings them God’s blessing. It is not just husband and wife united to each other in marriage; it is husband and wife united to each other with Jesus in marriage.

Both marriage and celibacy are calls from God to live a consecrated life that is to live as married couples or as singles who belong not to themselves but to God. Our lives are not our own, but they belong to God. He gives the grace and power to those who seek to follow his way of holiness in their state of life. Do you seek the Lord and his grace in your state of life? “Believe in the spiritual power which this sacrament of Jesus Christ gives to strengthen the marriage union, and to overcome all the crises and problems of life together. Married people must believe in the power of the sacrament to make them holy; they must believe in their vocation to witness through their marriage to the power of Christ’s love.” (Homily of Pope John Paul II in Limerick, Monday October 1st, 1979).

Let us remember God’s plan for marriage, that what God has joined together man must not separate. Marriage is a path to holiness, it is a vocation. Lord Jesus Christ, your call to holiness extends to all in every state of life. Sanctify our lives - as married couples and as singles - that we may live as men and women who are consecrated to you. Make us leaven in a society that disdains life-long marriage fidelity, chastity, and living single for the Lord.)

From Fr. Michal Head of the Holy Family

By God's will, Joseph becomes the father of an extraordinary family. Why extraordinary? Because his family is a reality, where all prophecies become fact. The family in which the Word becomes Flesh. A family where angels come so often. A family entrusted to a righteous man. Do you remember their visit to the Temple where they lost Jesus? Mary sees Joseph as the head of the family when she says to twelve-year-old Jesus, "your father and I have been looking for you." First, she mentions Joseph, then herself. It is not about who is more important, but who makes decisions in the natural order and on whom the family's future depends. This family, where divine matters connect to human things, was entrusted to Joseph's loving care. Everything that Joseph does in his life is about caring for Jesus and Mary. At the same time, Joseph tries to fulfill the mission that God entrusted to him. The most important for Joseph is to protect his family and help them to follow God's will. He is the Head of the Holy Family, because he knows how to obey God's will. Joseph knows that God's plan comes first. – Omnia instaurare in Christo To restore all things in Christ
