October 11th, 2020 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Today we mark 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time. In today’s Gospel Jesus is inviting us to join him in the great feast in heaven. We like being invited to social occasions. We enjoy the good company, the fellowship and of course the fine food. There is one feast to which we are all invited, the greatest feast of them all, the banquet in heaven. Jesus issued this invitation in the form of the parable in our Gospel today to the chief priests and Jewish elders. God the Father, gave a feast for his son’s wedding; Jesus is the groom wedded to the Church. The prophecy of Isaiah in our first reading was about God preparing a banquet for all people a banquet of fine wine. While it could refer to the feast at the end of time in heaven I think we could see it also referring to what God did for us in Jesus through the Church. This prophecy of fine wine was fulfilled in the very first miracle of Jesus at the wedding in Cana when Jesus changed the water into wine. When Jesus performed the miracle at Cana it meant the Old

Testament prophecies about the future Messiah were now beginning to be fulfilled and after Pentecost all peoples would be welcomed into the Church to taste this wine.

Even though Isaiah’s prophecy about all being invited to taste the wine in the banquet of the Church open to all people is now fulfilled, there is a warning at the end of the parable in the Gospel. The king noticed someone at the wedding banquet not wearing the wedding garment and ordered him to be thrown out. We can understand this to mean that the man was not living a good life, he was not living like one invited by God to his banquet. In the Book of Revelation we are told that the Bride of the Lamb, the Church, wears a clean white linen garment which is the righteous deeds of the holy ones. Yes we are all invited to the feast in the kingdom of heaven but we are to come to the feast

properly dressed, living good lives that show we are worthy to be invited to that feast. If we are not properly clothed, not living good Christian lives, God in his great mercy has given us the means of washing our clothes, the Sacrament of Reconciliation. As we receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation we take off our old clothes and put the new clothes of the grace of Christ. The thinking is common now that we will all go to heaven; we are all invited to heaven but as we heard in our Gospel we need to be properly dressed, living a good life, to be granted admittance to the kingdom. The letter to the Colossians gives us advice about what clothes a Christian is to put one. “Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another, if one has a grievance against another; as the Lord has forgiven you, so must you also do. And over all these put on love, that is, the bond of perfection.” (Colossians 3:12-14)

2020 Diocesan Ministries Appeal “Love Thy Neighbor”

October is very special and important month for Catholics. The first of all this is a month of the Holy Rosary. During this month church is encouraging us to pray this beautiful prayer in honor of the Blessed

Virgin Mary. October is also known as Respect Life Month and also in October through the Diocesan Ministries Appeal, the faithful of the Paterson Diocese are given the opportunity to provide help to all people served by catholic Charities agencies in Passaic, Morris and Sussex counties. One of the benefits of giving to our Diocesan Ministries Appeal is the knowledge that the funds stay in our own Diocese and only support important needs in Morris, Passaic and Sussex Counties. This local connection means that you may be helping your next-door neighbor, a former pastor now living in our priests’ retirement residence, the store owner you see each day as you shop in town – perhaps even a family member. What better way to “Love Thy Neighbor”? For your convenience, you can make an online gift or pledge at www.2020appeal.org

Catholics Care. Catholics Vote. Form your conscience. In their statement on Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, the U.S. Catholic bishops urge Catholics to form their conscience through being open to truth, studying Scripture and Church teaching, examining facts and background information, and prayerful reflection. Visit www.faithfulcitizenship.org to learn about the steps

you can take to form your conscience and to watch videos, download podcasts, and access other great resources on conscience formation for faithful citizens. "We need to participate for the common good. Sometimes we hear: a good Catholic is not interested in politics. This is not true: good Catholics immerse themselves in politics by offering the best of themselves so that the leader can govern." - Pope Francis, 9/16/13

Voting is one of our most important responsibilities as citizens. The Church teaches that there are three main responsibilities of all citizens: to pay taxes, to defend their country, and to vote.

Each of these responsibilities asks us to put the good of society and our fellow citizens above our individual desires and needs. In the voting booth, we have a privileged opportunity to contribute to our nation and promote the common good by bringing the values and teachings of our faith to bear on the issues facing our society.

The Church does not tell us whom to vote for when we enter the voting booth. Instead, Catholics are to use their judgment and follow their consciences as they apply the teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ and the core faith values to the choices they make in the voting booth.

Our faith teaches us that conscience is the voice of God resounding in the human heart, revealing the truth to us and calling us to do what is good while shunning what is evil.

As Catholics, we may choose different ways to respond to important social problems, but we cannot differ on our moral obligation to help build a more just and peaceful world through morally acceptable means, so that the weak and helpless are protected and human rights and dignity are defended.

Our faith reminds us that we must always reject and oppose evil actions of any sort. This is why the Church so strongly opposes abortion and euthanasia. In each case, the lives of the weak are endangered, and there can be no good reason to allow the taking of these innocent lives or to vote for legislation that would allow these evils to result.

Voting as a Catholic is hard work. It takes serious reflection, knowledge of Church teaching and awareness of who the candidates are and where they stand on the issues.

The Church challenges us to vote for what is best for society and all of its members, particularly those least able to speak up for or defend themselves. The great privilege of democracy is that we, as citizens and religious believers, can have a voice in the direction of our country by voting for the common good; this is both a right and a responsibility.

As Christians, we must cry out to God for our country, repent and ask forgiveness from Him, for the lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. Our

From Fr. Jayke My dear brothers and sisters, we all know that October is the

month when the leaves fully turn color and the heater gets turned-on to take the chill out of the house. However, for the Catholic Church, the month of October is the month of the Rosary, wherein this past Wednesday, October 7th, we had just celebrated the feast day of our Lady of the Rosary. Formerly, it was called as “Our Lady of Victory,” and “Feast of the Holy Rosary.” This feast in honor of Our Lady of the Rosary was instituted by Pope St. Pius V in gratitude for victory in the 1571 Battle of Lepanto, a fight between Turkish and Christian navies for the freedom to sail in the Mediterranean seas. While the battle raged, Pope St. Pius V and all Christians in Italy prayed the rosary for victory. At the end, they gained victory over the Ottoman Navy and this victory saved Europe from being overrun by the forces of Islam.

This month is also dedicated as the Respect Life Month. Having said this, the U.S. Bishops state that this month is a time to focus on

God’s precious gift of human life because all life is precious from the moment of conception to natural death. As Catholic Christians, we have the responsibility to care for, to protect, and to defend the lives of our brothers and sisters. To do all these things, we are urged and encourage to pray the Holy Rosary every day. Because praying the Holy Rosary is one of the most powerful weapons that we have to foster respect for all human life. Also, by praying the Holy Rosary we enter the ponderings of Mary’s heart upon the life of her son, wherein our Blessed Mother Virgin Mary was the one who said “yes” to God’s plan. Life began at the moment Mary conceived our Lord Jesus Christ in her womb.

Therefore, the Catholic Church reminds us that all life begins at the moment of conception and Mary’s “yes” gave us the author of life and the promise of eternal life. Also, the Catholic Church reminds us that we must put our Lord Jesus Christ as the center of our life. As Pope Benedict XVI once said that the Holy Rosary helps to put Christ at the center, as the Virgin did, who meditated within all that was said about her Son, and also what he did and said. When reciting the Holy Rosary, the important and meaningful moments of salvation history are relived. The various steps of Christ's mission are traced. With Mary the heart is oriented toward the mystery of Jesus. Christ is put at the center of our life, of our time, of our nation, through the contemplation and meditation of his holy mysteries of joy, light, sorrow and glory. Lastly, when the Holy Rosary is prayed in an authentic way and very profoundly, and not in a mechanical and superficial way, it brings peace and reconciliation. That is why my dear brothers and sisters, in this month of October, may we ask the intercession of our Blessed Mother Virgin Mary to help us to keep Christ at the center of our life, and help us to remain faithful in God’s service, for the glory of God and salvation of souls. Thank you and God bless! In Christ Jesus, Rev. Jayke Pariñas

PRAY DAILY.

.PRAYER OF POPE FRANCIS FOR PROTECTION AND HELP.

O Mary, you always shine on our path as a sign of salvation and of hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who at the cross took part in Jesus’ pain, keeping your faith firm. You…know what we need, and we are sure you will provide so that, as in Cana of Galilee, we may return to joy and to feasting after this time of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the will of the Father and to do as we are told by Jesus, who has taken upon himself our sufferings and carried our sorrows to lead us, through the cross, to the joy of the resurrection. Amen. Under your protection, we seek refuge, Holy Mother of God. Do not disdain the entreaties of those of us who are in trial, but deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.
