My Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Msgr. T. Mark Condon

F S O T “I ”

In our second reading for this Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Saint Paul counsels us through his First Le er to

the Corinthians: “I should like you to be free of all anxie es” (1 Cor. 7:32). Paul preaches the risen Christ as the one who is the key to our freedom from fear and anxiety. A freedom from anxiety indicates, for Paul, that we believe in the power of the redemp on that Christ has accomplished.

Having been freed from fear through the death and resurrec on of Jesus Christ we should be free from the

crushing fear. Our communion with the Lord and the gi of his abiding presence and his gi of redemp on to us gives us the freedom to serve him in peace and joy. Paul preaches a freedom that allows us to give ourselves over to joyful service of the Lord so that we are his witnesses to the gospel. Having given us the gi of redemp on Saint Paul challenges us to live as if we know that we have been redeemed.

Anxiety is a part of life and is a reality that we all must learn to deal with in order to live a healthy life. Worry

can sap our strength and can prevent us from prayer or enjoying the presence of the people in our life who help to calm our fears. Extreme worry can even lead to a kind of hardness of heart that closes us off from the love and companionship of those with whom we share our day. To become hard of heart is to be closed off to the presence of God who con nually seeks us out and seeks to draw us to himself most especially in the difficult and heartbreaking experiences of life. In his June 1, 2017 daily medita on, our Holy Father, Pope Francis spoke about the wisdom of Saint Paul; the Va can News Services provided this summary:

So it was then that ‘this fighter, this boundless proclaimer,’ possessed the ‘mys cal dimension of the encounter with Jesus.’ And his ‘strength’ was precisely ‘this encounter with the Lord that he had in prayer, as it had been at the me of the first encounter on the road to Damascus, when he was going about persecu ng Chris ans.’ Paul, the Holy Father explained, ‘is that man who has encountered the Lord, and he cannot forget that, and he allows the Lord to encounter him and he seeks the Lord so as to encounter Him’. Indeed, a ‘man of prayer.’ Summarizing the three a tudes that characterize Saint Paul, the Pope recalled his ‘apostolic zeal to proclaim Jesus Christ; resistance — resis ng persecu ons; and prayer: encountering the Lord and allowing himself to be encountered by the Lord.’ And recalling ‘an expression of a Church Father of the first century,’ the Pope added, ‘we can say that Paul was con nuing on amid the persecu ons of the world and the consola ons of the Lord.’ Concluding his reflec on, the Holy Father invited all to ask for ‘the grace to learn these three a tudes in our Chris an life: to proclaim Jesus Christ; to resist the seduc ons brought about by the persecu ons and seduc ons which lead us to distance ourselves from Jesus Christ; and the grace of encountering Jesus Christ in prayer.’

The answer to the calming of fears and the an dote for the emp ness that we can some mes experience as we go about our daily responsibili es is a person: Jesus Christ. In Mark’s gospel, we find Jesus cas ng out an unclean spirit and rebuking the spirit. Jesus always warns the spirits not to reveal his iden ty. In a scene from the “Peanuts” comics, Linus comes up to Charlie Brown and says, “Charlie Brown, do you want to know what the trouble with you is?” Charlie Brown answers, “No.” Linus con nues, “The trouble with you, Charlie Brown, is that you don’t want to know what the trouble with you is.”

Pastor’s Message (...continued from Page 4)

In the gospel, we usually find huge crowds following Jesus. The sick are desperate to get close to Jesus for healing. For most in the crowd, physical healing is the most important gi Jesus offers. But the Lord wants them to know that there is more to his mission. Following the healings, Jesus sternly warns the unclean spirits, who recognize him, not to tell anyone of his iden ty. Why is that? Why does Jesus want to keep his true iden ty a secret from some – at least for a me? Jesus keeps his iden ty secret from some because he was seeking to save all people and some people in the crowd, even some who had been healed of their physical illnesses, were not ready to hear the truth of who Jesus is because they were not ready to understand the truth about themselves. The mission of Jesus, the redemp on that he will accomplish will not only involve the glory of his resurrec on from the dead, it will include the mystery of the cross. Many were not ready to hear that. Some mes we aren’t ready for that truth either. Some mes our heaviest crosses are illusions about ourselves. They are heaviest because they are crosses of our own making. To grow in our life of faith we need to have the gi of self-understanding. But self-understanding takes me to reach. Some mes we can be unaware of our faults. Not because we think we are perfect but because we can fail to see how our ac ons affect others. Or because we have illusions about the way we think that life should be. Jesus wants his followers to understand the demands of following him – and that always involves the cross – but he is willing to give us me to understand where we need to change our thinking and a tudes. Winston Churchill, who led England through World War II, once said: “I am always ready to learn although I don’t always like being taught.” It takes humility and courage to admit that we need others to learn the truth about ourselves and who we are before God. Our rela onships with others teach us so much about ourselves. Our rela onship with God teaches us most of all. Knowing the truth about ourselves is not an exercise in numbering all of our faults. Understanding who we are before God means that we put our rela onship with God first and that we are open to the difficult things God calls us to do. At the beginning of this New Year it is a good me to ask ourselves: “What is it about myself that I want to be er understand?” This is the me to ask God for the strength to begin anew. What is it that is standing in the way of deepening my rela onship with God and others? Is it jealousy, or envy, or selfishness? The Lord gradually reveals his purposes for our lives. We too slowly understand God’s ac on in our lives. The good news of the New Year is that God might be calling us to a new way of living that will be both a surprise and a joy and that he gives us the light of the Holy Spirit to guide us. The message of this Gospel is that Jesus is the Eternal Word of God who has authority over all. As we move from day to day we ask for grace to put fear and anxiety aside. We will always have some worries but we ask for the strength that we need to put aside that degree of anxiety that saps our strength and prevents us from serving the Lord as we can. The Opening Prayer for this Sunday asks: “Grant us, Lord our God, that we may honor you with all your mind, and love you in truth of heart.” By concentra ng on the needs of others we can find that our own worries are at least diminished if not eliminated.

L B – A W F 14, 2018

On Wednesday, February 14, 2018 we begin the holy season of Lent. Lent is the period of me when we prepare ourselves to celebrate the great feast of the Resurrec on of Easter. During Lent we concentrate in an intense way on the call to discipleship through prayer, fas ng, and almsgiving – caring for the poor. Lent can be a privileged

me when our hearts are renewed and our mission to be disciples of the Lord is refocused and intensified. Please join us for the celebra on of the Eucharist on Ash Wednesday – all Masses and Liturgies of the Word will be celebrated in the Church: Mass: 7:00, 11:45 AM; 7:30 PM; Liturgy of the Word with the imposi on of ashes: 4:15 and 5:45 PM. Taking part in the celebra on of Mass is the best way to begin this Lenten season of grace. Daily Mass, or taking part in Mass at least one addi onal day in the week, can also be the very best way to travel the Lenten journey with a sense of purpose, expecta on, and to open us to the power of God’s grace at work in us.

Attention 2nd Grade Parents: As weekly mass is an integral part of our lives as Catholics, it is important that our children attend weekly mass. This is especially important as they prepare for the Sacrament of First Eucharist and equally important after they receive their Sacrament. While our parish offers many masses during each weekend for us to attend, during the next several weeks, we require that all children who will soon receive the Sacrament of First Eucharist, attend the Sunday 9:30 AM mass together as a group. Attending mass together shall begin on Sunday, February 25, 2018 and continue through each of the remaining weekends of preparation.
