4th Sunday in Ordinary Time

PASTOR’S DESK

THE SANCTITY OF HUMAN LIFE

Some years ago I remember having a conversation with a young family member of whom I am

very fond about abortion. She is bright, compassionate and a wonderful mother of three

children but we differed. At one point, she came to a realization that prompted her to say:

“well of course, you’re a Catholic.”

My immediate reaction was that it wasn’t exactly an insult because I treasure my Catholic Faith

but that she was ascribing to me participation in a herd mentality. It prompted me to ask

myself if I would be opposed to abortion even if I was not Catholic. I would have to say “yes.”

My reverence for the history, tradition and wisdom of my faith does not make me a mindless

robot. It is difficult, however, to ignore that each person is created in the image and likeness of

God.

It is clear that this is one of the most volatile issues in our society. It is one that also causes

fairly widespread discomfort and won’t go away. It is unacceptable in some quarters or, at

least, reduces the credibility of his views for an older male to be opining on the subject. As a

father and a grandfather I have experienced the joy of children and grandchildren, enough to

give me pause in the matter even without church teaching.

For me the right to life transcends every other right and in this the position of the church is a

reinforcement of my human instinct not as my friend above would have it an act of blind

following. For me this is an example of the incarnational mantra “Grace builds on nature.”

It is deeply troubling to me that some of the staunchest defenders of the right to life cast their

lot with those whose concern seems to end with birth. Catholic social teaching extends to all

areas of the well-being of our brothers and sisters beyond the womb including their need for

food, shelter, health care and education, a safe and healthy environment and the right to a

living wage. Bishop John Stowe of Lexington, Kentucky has expressed a similar sentiment.

“Our reverence for life cannot be limited to life in the womb, as obviously important as that is.

Our commitment to see each child flourish cannot end with the birth of the child” he has

written.

The late Cardinal Joseph Bernadin of Chicago called concern for life a seamless garment. It

includes Pope St Paul VI’s plea before the United Nations: “Jamais la guerre” “Never again

war” as well as Pope Francis recent absolute condemnation of capital punishment.

There are movements afoot at the state level to remove all restrictions on abortion in

anticipation of the possibility that the Supreme Court as currently constituted might repeal Roe

v Wade. This past week, New York State passed such a law reportedly virtually lifting any

restrictions on abortion up to the day of birth.

The first of rights is to life and we must champion it far beyond birth. Without its protection

from conception to natural death other rights in between are in peril.

Bishop Stowe ends his reflection with a prayer. “O God who adorns creation with splendor

and beauty and fashions human lives in your image and likeness, awaken in every heart

reverence for the work of your hands and renew among your people a readiness to nurture

and sustain your precious gift of human life.”

From Senior Deacon Mike

Last week, the Gospel from Luke described the event at which Jesus read from the prophet Isaiah. He was attending a service in the synagogue as was his cus-tom as an observant Jew.

The congregation was amazed at his teaching.

But, as he continued his commentary, the listeners became suddenly angry at his criticism of their faith. Jesus then departed.

Help School on Wheels of MA

Sharon Girl Scouts is partnering with School on

Wheels of MA to organize a game drive for February

vacation 2019. School on Wheels is an organization

that provide tutoring, school supplies, academic sup-

port and college scholarships for homeless students

across our state.

The goal of this drive is to gather games so that the

200 kids now living in 15 shelters in Eastern MA can

have a new game or puzzle top brighten their school

vacation week.

Donations are greatly appreciated and can be dropped

off in the box at the back of the church until February

9th.

Winter brought us expenses this week that will be met by your generosity in the Grand Annual. A pipe broke in Bullock Center, one of the two furnaces in the church could need replacing and we got a new proposal to update our fire alarm system in the four buildings. If you can help in any way with this: a

Grand Annual contribution, a little

extra in the weekly, we would

appreciate it. Thank you

Thank you to Fr. Daly, Fr. Spicer, Fr. Chichetto, Claire Sullivan and Monica LaFond for providing a beautiful First Reconciliation service last Saturday. Congratulations to all of the children who received the Sacrament!
