Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson
Whether it’s those first four notes of Beethoven’s fifth symphony or the theme song of our favorite TV show, music speaks to us. Perhaps we stop speaking for a few moments. We drop whatever else we’re doing and listen.
Today’s combined Readings from Scripture are like a symphony on a familiar theme. First comes Jeremiah and the great words: “I will place my law within them and write it upon their hearts. I will be their God and they will be my people.” Then the overlay of “Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies it produces much fruit.” Love mingles with death. Death undergone out of love.
These concepts are well-known and accepted by believers as part of their heritage. The Letter to the Hebrews explains that Jesus is the Son of God who learned obedience through suffering.
During Lent especially those quotes remind us that suffering in our own lives comes with our decision to walk with Jesus. Another way to think about discipleship is that the straight and narrow path is not an easy one to walk. From time to time we wonder why bad things happen to good people. People like us.
No explanation of that truth is ever fully satisfying. “Why oh why this death of my spouse? Or why this cancer? Why this layoff from work?” In the end, we are as grains of wheat that have to fall to the ground to discover our better angels.
There is a story from the Middle Ages about a young woman who was expelled from heaven. As she left, she was told that if she would bring back the gift that is most valued by God, she would be welcomed back. She brought back drops of blood from a dying patriot. No entry. She brought back some coins that a destitute widow had given to the poor. No entry. She brought back a remnant of a Bible that had been used for years by an eminent preacher. Still no entry. She brought back many similar things but was turned back repeatedly. (continued…)

24 Hours A Day—7 Days a Week This week we celebrate the feasts of St. Patrick and St. Joseph. We often have parties and parades to honor St. Patrick, but what about St. Joseph? Surely, if any Saint has earned a celebration in their name it would be St. Joseph. St. Joseph is the “silent” saint. He has no quotes or preaching, only his life. God chose him to care for, provide, protect and love Mary and His Son,
Jesus. He did it with a quiet resolve, filled with trust in God. Let us come to the altar of Jesus and ask Him to help all men to live their lives as St. Joseph. Bring our children and teach them to admire, love and seek the quiet help of St Joseph in all their daily needs and challenges. .
ADORERS, OFFER ONE HOUR THIS WEEK FOR ALL WHO SEEK GOD’S WILL; FOR ALL WHO ARE NOT AFRAID TO DO
WHAT GOD HAS DIRECTED THEM TO DO; FOR ALL TO QUIETLY LISTEN TO THE VOICE OF GOD WITHIN THEIR HEARTS.
Adorers needed: Tuesday 2:00 a.m. - 3:00 a.m. Wednesday 1:00 a.m. - 2:00 a.m. Wednesday 4:00 a.m. - 5:00 a.m. Saturday 3:00 a.m. - 4:00 a.m. To sign up call Melanie

One day she saw a small boy playing by a fountain. A man rode up on horseback and dismounted to take a drink. The man saw the child and suddenly remembered his boyhood innocence. Then, looking in the fountain and seeing the reflection of his hardened face, he realized what he had done with his life. And tears of repentance welled up in his eyes and began to trickle down his cheeks. The young woman took one of these tears back to heaven and was received immediately with joy and love.
