Seeing Is Believing We hear many examples of the disciples seeing Jesus but not recognizing him. In John’s Gospel, Mary of Magdalene does not recognize him until he speaks to her. In Luke’s Gospel (next week), the disciples meet Jesus on the road to Emmaus, but do not recognize him until he breaks bread with them. In today’s Gospel, the disciples rejoice when they saw Jesus, after he showed them his hands and side. Thomas, who was not there, did not believe the disciples’ story of seeing Jesus. Thomas will not believe unless he Jesus in person, in fact, only if he can see the mark of nails in hands and put his finger into the marks. Thomas’s doubt is hardly surprising. The news of Jesus’ appearance was incredible to the disciples who had seen him crucified and buried. Thomas’s human nature compelled him to want evidence that Jesus who appeared after death was the same person who had been crucified. Thomas was given the opportunity to act on that desire, and is our witness that Jesus is really risen. Jesus responds to Thomas saying, “Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.” The story of Thomas illustrates our Christian experience today, and the experience of every new Christian ministered to by the disciples. After the first witness of Jesus, we all have been called to believe without seeing! Our faith is based on the witness of the Church that has preceded us, beginning with Thomas and the first disciples. Through Baptism, we receive the same Holy Spirit that Jesus brought to the first disciples. We are among those who are blessed because we believe without having seen.

Stewardship Are you good at making people feel welcome? When you meet someone new, do you make them feel at home? Many of us can probably do a much better job at this. When we make people feel welcome, we make them feel like they are included instead of being excluded. A simple hello and a smile go a long way.
