June 9, 2019 Pentecost Sunday
8th Grade Graduation Congratulations Class of 2019
OUR LADY OF PEACE CHURCH ERIE, PA
Our Mission Statement: Our Lady of Peace is a Catholic Community of Faith called to proclaim the
greatness of the Lord through Worship, Service, Education and Ministry.
Sunday’s Readings: First Reading ‐ Because Stephen professes his faith in the Son of Man, he is stoned to death (Acts 7:55-60). Psalm ‐ The Lord is king, the most high over all the earth (Psalm 97). Second Reading ‐ I, the Alpha and the Omega, am coming soon (Revelation 22:12-14, 16-17, 20). Gospel ‐ Jesus prays that the love of the Father may be in those who believe (John 17:20-26). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved.
RECONCILED DIVERSITY A few years ago, during Rome’s quiet summer, Pope Francis took a day off to visit privately with some old friends, whose identity took Catholic Italy by surprise: Evangelical Protestants. They welcomed Francis to their Pentecostal Church of Reconciliation, where Francis asked pardon for Catholic persecutions and celebrated the Holy Spirit’s “pentecostal work.” Unlike Satan, declared Francis, who creates division among God’s children, the Holy Spirit creates a diversity rich and beautiful. And unity; not uniformity, Francis specified, but unity in diversity. Francis named the Spirit’s gift “reconciled diversity.” Pentecost’s rich treasury of scriptural readings, for Saturday’s vigil and Sunday’s morning liturgy, traces the Holy Spirit’s work from creation’s beginning, through Jesus’ resurrection, into the church’s earliest days, now into our days. Kindled in our hearts, the Spirit’s gentle fire is ours to share generously, even with those most strikingly different from us. All hearts are Spirit-warmed by reconciled diversity. Copyright © J. S. Members of the 31 Club agree to go to daily Mass on a particular day every month and offer that Mass for an increase of vocations to the Church. There is a great need for vocations in the Church today. One of the best ways to increase vocations is through prayer, and the greatest prayer we have is the holy sacrifice of the Mass. Upcoming Mass commitments: June 9: Ellie A., Elaine S., Jane D., Bill C. June 10: Ann T., Veronica W., Peg Z., Pat C., Pat M., Mary S. June 11: Dave D., Paul M., Connie S. June 12: Rose B., Madeline H., Alice O., Chris P. June 13: Sylvia B., Phyllis D., Joanie M., Charlie R., Phil T., Sarah F., Glenn B., Donna R. June 14: Nancy A., Mary Fran P., Peggy R., Alice S. June 15: Jean H., Mary Alice W., Loretta B., Mandy K. If you would like to join the OLP 31 Club, please call Dave or Kathy Wayman at 454-8974. There are no dues and no meetings, only opportunities for grace and the satisfaction that comes from helping to fulfill a great need in the Church.

OUR LADY OF PEACE CHURCH ERIE, PA
From the Pastor’s Desk… To my Spiritual Family of Our Lady of Peace-
Happy Birthday Church God! Pentecost has traditionally been considered the birthday of the church since it was the descent of the Holy Spirit on Mary and the Apostles when the mission of the Church truly began. Red is the liturgical color of Pentecost and we pray that all of us individually, as a parish and the greater Catholic Church can be set afire once again with the power of the Holy Spirit.
Part of that inspiration and renewal of the Holy Spirit comes in changes that are necessary for healing and new life even if they are difficult and painful. It is with that in mind that I am announcing this weekend on behalf of Bishop Persico that Fr. Kyle, our parochial vicar, is being placed on a complete medical leave of absence and therefore will not be returning to Our Lady of Peace Parish for ministry. Please continue to pray for Fr. Kyle that the Holy Spirit can provide him the grace, strength and healing he needs to return to priestly ministry. And I will certainly keep you updated when I know more about his status or location. I know it is difficult when one of our priests leaves the parish especially when we do not have a chance to say goodbye. But we have to trust that the Holy Spirit can also bring us the healing, hope and strength we need and that He will get Fr. Kyle and us through this.
Bishop Persico recognizes that a parish of our size needs more than one full time priest, so he has assigned OLP native son, Fr. Mark Hoffman, as parochial vicar here for a term of one year. Fr. Mark most recently served for 6 months as parochial vicar at Notre Dame Parish in Hermitage, PA. His parents are still active parishioners here and so this is a unique opportunity for him to be close to them while helping serve our parish. Fr. Mark’s assignment with us begins on Monday, June 17th. There will be coffee and cookies after all the Masses the weekend of June 22/23 to give us a chance to welcome him and say hello. I know change is always challenging but we have to trust in God. May God bless Fr. Kyle, Fr. Mark and OLP Parish in this time of transition… and our week ahead! Yours in Christ, Fr. Rich
Our Lady of Peace, patroness of our parish & school…. pray for us! St. Nicholas, patron of the Erie Catholic School System. pray for us! Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, patroness of the Catholic Church of the USA… pray for us! St. Joseph, universal patron of the church…. pray for us! St. Patrick, patron of the Diocese of Erie…. pray for us! Other notes from the pastor… **Solemn Evening Prayer and Benediction for Pentecost (and cake!) We will celebrate our birthday and conclude the Easter Season with adoration of the Blessed Sacrament immediately after the 4:30PM Mass this Sunday (June 9th). Adoration will continue until 6:00PM at which time we will pray Evening Prayer of the Church and conclude with Benediction (the special blessing given to us with the Eucharist). We also will be praying for our parish youth mission trip to Frenchville through the Young People Who Care Program later in June. I hope you can join us for this final Easter and Birthday Celebration (and YES we will have cake after the liturgy since it is a birthday party after all!).
**Pastoral Council Members Congratulations to Stacy Congdon and Kathy Fross who were selected by lot as the two newest members of our Pastoral Council (the main planning/visionary group for our parish). They will have a term of three years. Two other members of the council, Liz Nee (6 years) and Joanne Bello (5 years) are completing their time with the council and I thank them very much for their extended commitment. Two other updates on membership- council member Lori Dever has agreed to extend service beyond the one year term she served last year and our new officers are: president- Nancy Milkowski; vice-president- Greg Galdon; secretary- Lori Dever. **Sites and Sounds Pilgrimage This week 36 of us pilgrims will be heading to Amish country to see the production of “Jesus” at the Sites and Sounds Theatre in Lancaster, PA. We leave after the 7:00AM Mass on Wednesday and will return Friday night. I thank Fr. Shane for covering funerals and emergencies in my absence and Fr. Phil Oriole, a retired priest of the Erie Diocese residing at St. George, who will be covering the 12:10PM Masses. **OLP Parish Bonfires Our Faith Formation Ministry will be sponsoring a parish bonfire next Saturday, June 15th at 6pm on the south side of the school. This is a great chance for our parish family to stay connected over the summer months so I hope you can join us. This is open to families and individuals so everyone is welcome! **I am excited that we will be offering a Vacation Bible School at OLP again this summer from July 29- August 2. Also, if those dates do not work for you, both St. Joseph Bread of Life Parish and St. George Parish in Erie will be offering a VBS (go to their websites for more info). And see below for more details and take advantage of this opportunity to continue the faith formation of our children during the summer! **Wish List: In order to ensure we comply with the Diocesan Child Protection Policy we must rent a van, at the cost of $650, to transport the adult and student volunteers to the Frenchville Mission Trip. We welcome any and all donations to help cover this unexpected cost, please contact the church office or Fr. Rich.

Hello all! We have THREE great Youth Ministry activities this upcoming week!

3. Our first Family Bon Fire of the summer will be held this Saturday, June 15th from 6:00 to 9:00PM behind the OLP School. There is no cost to attend the event, nor do you have to RSVP. We only ask you bring a dish to share – Last names A-K are asked to bring a side dish, and last names L-Z are asked to bring a dessert. There will be hotdogs, games and activities, and, of course, the bonfire! All families are invited!
Have a great week everyone, and I will hopefully see you at our events this week!
