OUR LADY OF PEACE CHURCH ERIE, PA

Our Mission Statement: Our Lady of Peace is a Catholic Community of Faith called to proclaim the

greatness of the Lord through Worship, Service, Education and Ministry.

Church Cleaners for the Week of July 2

Team 6: Barb S., Margie P., Mary E.

Thank you to all those who are willing to help with this important ministry of keeping our church clean and beautiful.

Those interested in joining this ministry please call the Church Office.

Sunday’s Readings: First Reading ‐ Elisha promises a baby son to the hospitable woman (2 Kings 4:8-11, 14-16a). Psalm ‐ For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord (Psalm 89). Second Reading ‐ We shall live in newness of life as Christ was raised from the dead (Romans 6:3-4, 8-11). Gospel ‐ Whoever gives but a cup of cold water to another will surely be rewarded (Matthew 10:37-42). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from the Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved.

THE RICHNESS OF LIFE IN CHRIST Today we have the beautiful story of the woman promised a child, the wonderful exhortation about life in Christ, and a powerful instruction from Jesus. An embarrassment of riches? Not if we take Jesus' words about "welcome" to heart. The many challenges and blessings offered to us today by Elisha, Paul, and Jesus should be cause for rejoicing, and welcomed heartily into our lives. And, like the great treat that they are, they should be enjoyed and shared generously with others. Today's reading from Romans was chosen very early in the liturgical life of the Church to be the sole apostolic instruction received by candidates for baptism at the Easter Vigil. This illustrates its importance as a core belief, and as a means of comprehending the story of the Resurrection. Christ's resurrection is not merely a story about something that he underwent once upon a time, but it is our story, the story of how we joined the other members of the one Body of Christ, the church. We were not only dead, but we were buried; not ultimately buried, but raised to eternal life with Christ. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

When at Mass offer the Mass for Vocations by praying the prayer below...

Serra Prayer for Vocations O God, who wills not the death of a sinner * but rather that he be converted and live * grant we beseech you * through the intercession of the Blessed Mary, ever Virgin * Saint Joseph, her spouse * St. Junipero Serra * and all the saints * an increase of laborers for your Church * fellow laborers with Christ to spend and consume themselves for souls * through the same Jesus Christ * Your Son * Who lives and reigns with You * In the unity of the Holy Spirit * God forever * and ever. Amen.

Members of the 31 Club agree to go to daily Mass on a particular day every month and offer that Mass for an increase of vocations to the Church. There is a great need for vocations in the Church today. One of the best ways to increase vocations is through prayer, and the greatest prayer we have is the holy sacrifice of the Mass. Upcoming Mass commitments: July 2: Kathy W., Deacon Dennis K. July 3: Sister Peggy, Linda D., Wilma M., Virginia S. July 4: Arlene B. July 5: Ed B., Joyce K., Chuck & Linda R. July 6: Maxine B., Denise & Michael G., Bernie H., Susan F. July 7: Margaret K. July 8: Peggy C., Tim G., Pat H., Catilda M., Patricia P., Diane & Bill S., Jean V., Ann S. If you would like to join the OLP 31 Club, please call Dave or Kathy Wayman at 454-8974. There are no dues and no meetings, only opportunities for grace and the satisfaction that comes from helping to fulfill a great need in the Church.

OLP 31 Club Praying for vocations every day of the year!

OUR LADY OF PEACE CHURCH ERIE, PA

From the Pastor’s Desk… Earlier this month we hosted the latest Vicariate Meeting

for the Diocese of Erie’s Pastoral Planning Process. At that meeting Bishop Persico and members of the Faith Formation Task Force unveiled the preliminary plan for Faith Formation in the Diocese. “With some of the logistics behind us, it’s finally time for you to go back to your parishes and your schools and to stir into flame a renewed passion for the Gospel, and a deeper understanding of what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ,” the bishop said. The task force recommendations deal with six key areas: lifelong formation, vision, parish leadership, diocesan leadership, the role of the family and lay ministry. The full list of recommendations are posted in a link that can be found on the website- www.eriercd.org/planning.htm. The Bishop and task force members are asking parishioners in the Diocese of Erie to offer their feedback to the plan between June 16 and July 28, 2017. An online survey and instructions are provided in the links provided on the same website mentioned above. I am soliciting input for a parish wide institutional response from our staff, Pastoral Council, Families Together Ministry Team, RCIA Team and Faith Formation Committee, but your individual responses are also very important. I hope you will take the time to read the information found online and fill out the survey. On Sunday, July 16th we will also have coffee and donuts with iPads available in the cafeteria after all Masses to assist you in filling out the survey. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

May God bless our diocesan pastoral planning process and our week ahead! Yours in Christ, Fr. Rich Our Lady of Peace…. pray for us! St. Joseph, universal patron of the church…. pray for us! St. Patrick, patron of the Diocese of Erie…. pray for us!

Other notes from the pastor…. **OLP Golf Outing I look forward to playing in my first scramble here at OLP next week. Please do whatever you can to support this fundraiser for our parish and school which takes place on Friday, July 14th at Whispering Woods Golf Course. Whether it is registering a foursome, sponsoring a hole or volunteering, anything is greatly appreciated. **VMA Mission Trip The following members of our parish will be participating in a mission trip to Haiti this summer- Jenn Malue, Emily Zukowski, Sara Prischak, Lauren Prischak, Maya Leibold, Victoria Sanders, and Abigail Kurczewski. See elsewhere for more information but some of them will be at all Masses this weekend and I hope we can support them with our donations and our prayers. **Pastor’s Schedule I will be away from Thursday, July 6th until Wednesday, July 12th for a college roommate’s wedding in Wisconsin. Unfortunately this means I will miss Fr. David’s last weekend here at OLP and Fr. Kyle’s arrival. This wedding has been planned for six months and usually the priest transitions take place earlier in the summer so this conflict was quite unanticipated. I thank you for your understanding. In next weekend’s bulletin I will comment more on thanking Fr. David and saying goodbye.

**Fr. David Renne Reassigned Fr. David is being sent to pursue a Doctorate Degree in Systematic Theology at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC this fall. His residence will be at St. Peter Cathedral while here in Erie starting Monday, July 10th. This is something Fr. David expressed interest in ever since he was ordained and Bishop Persico is graciously giving him the opportunity to pursue it. I know all of us have the mixed emotions that transitions like this involve- excited for his opportunity but sad to see him leave. I pray that we can all be open to the Holy Spirit working through this situation to bring new life, grace, and growth in all of us. There will be a farewell reception for Fr. David on Sunday, July 9th from 12 Noon to 2pm in the cafeteria. I hope everyone can make an effort to stop by the reception to say goodbye and to express our gratitude for Fr. David’s wonderful ministry to our parish these past four years. **Fr. Kyle Seyler (newly ordained this June), will be the new parochial vicar here at Our Lady of Peace as of Monday, July 10th. Fr. Kyle is twenty-five years old, is from Franklin, PA and recently graduated from St. Mary Seminary in Baltimore, PA. I encourage you to watch the interview of Fr. Kyle and his two classmates on the diocesan website (a link at www.eriercd.org) to learn more about him. Once he arrives, we will hear more about him but for now we pray for him! **Fortnight for Freedom As I mentioned last weekend in the bulletin, we are now in the midst of the Fortnight for Freedom (from June 21—the vigil of the Feasts of St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More—to July 4, Independence Day). Since 2010, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops have encouraged dioceses around the country to highlight the importance of defending religious freedom for the two weeks (fortnight) before Independence Day. As the quote from Pope Francis says on the Bishops’ website, “Religion [cannot] be relegated to the inner sanctum of personal life, without influence on societal and national life.” -Evangelii Gaudium, 183. If religious liberty is not respected, all people suffer and are deprived of the essential contribution to the common good, be it in education, health care, feeding the hungry, civil rights, and social services that the Church and other people of faith make every day, both here at home and overseas. This will be a special intention at our daily Masses during this stretch and I encourage you to find ways to incorporate this intention in your daily prayers. Also, our daily parish rosary at 11:35am will include this intention. For more information on this important initiative of the US Bishops, I encourage you to check out their website at www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/religious-liberty/index.cfm **July Fourth Mass is at 9am on Tuesday. This will conclude the Fortnight for Freedom in which we pray for our country and religious liberty in our land. **Canada Pilgrimage I am excited to announce that I will be leading a pilgrimage to Montreal and Quebec from September 29- October 5, 2017. The cost is $1,979 and includes bus transportation, six nights stay at hotels, nine meals, and entrance fees to shrines. Highlights include the Canadian North American Martyrs Shrine in Midland, ON; St. Joseph Oratory in Montreal; the St. Kateri Tekakwitha Shrine in Montreal; and the National Shrine of Sainte Anne-de-Beaupre in Quebec. Flyers at the parish office or check out the website: www.pilgrimages.com/frtoohey/

The OLP Prayer Ministry

This is a ministry for those individuals who are unable to attend usual parish functions perhaps due to an impairment, lack of transportation or illness. This active ministry can be done from home, a nursing home, the hospital, etc. Those who participate will be asked to voluntarily pray for a specific group, ministry or function as the meeting, ministry or function is occurring. Prayer is vital to our lives and keeps us connected as members of the Body of Christ. For more information or if you have questions, contact: Deacon John at [email protected] or Tammie Mang in the Faith Formation Office at 814-838-9983, [email protected].

A Family Perspective Today’s gospel challenges us to resist the individualism of our culture. Everything we are and have is pure gift

which we are expected to share especially to the “lowly ones.” What has been freely given needs to be

shared freely. No strings attached.

It is becoming increasingly clear that our Pope Francis is a pope who, as Stephen White put it, smells like his sheep. He is a man of his people, and a father who communicates to his people in a fashion that they seem to like. More evidence of this is a means to prayer that the Holy Father authored when he was still the Archbishop in Argentina. It is a lovely way to pray, and it showcases Pope Francis’ sense of simplicity, his priority for family, his love for the poor and also his recognition that prayer is powerful. This is a simple way to prayer that even kids can get. It is eminently practical, and is certainly grounded in the Catholic tradition. Indeed, what I like most about it is the end. By praying for others we can begin to see our own needs in greater perspective. It is an important lesson, one that pops up in Catholic Social Teaching quite often.
