July 22, 2018,

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, One of the things they failed to teach us about in the seminary was construction and plumbing, nor did they mention that as priests we may be required to rip up a bathroom floor in order to replace beams that had rotted away. But thankfully my father made sure that my brother and I knew how to build a house from the ground up, although his hope was that we would never have to do this as adults. That knowledge came in handy this past week, as I began to repair the bathroom in the outreach office, removing the bowl, and tiles, only to find the floor beams had turned into compost. As of writing this, I already replaced the beams, the plywood will go down tonight or tomorrow, and tile following that, resulting in a bathroom that nobody should notice any difference. That seems to be the essence of what we do here in the parish and in the Church as a whole. For the most part, we go about our daily routine, making repairs, paying bills, praying for the salvation of souls, and until something goes wrong, nobody ever seems to notice. There are many hands that cooperate to make things work, many of whom do not get the recognition that they deserve, and although they do not request that recognition, I’m going to explain a few things. Prior to being assigned as the pastor here at our Lady of Mt. Carmel, I was the temporary administrator of Sacred Heart and Our Lady of Ostrabrama parishes in Cutchogue and Mattituck; the staff at the main parish, Sacred Heart, was larger than the staff here at OLMC. Our current full time employees are our Parish and Religious Education Secretary Susan Schmutz, whom many of you know, and Madlyn D’Ambrose, who is our Director of Religious Education. Both of these women go far beyond what they were hired to do, and what they are paid for, and we could not function without either of them. Aside from these two full-time employees, I was fortunate to hire on a High School student last November, Joe, who works for us part time after school hours, cleaning up the parish center and making sure everything is ready for Religious Ed classes and everything else that goes on here. Closing out our list of employees is Germaine Fontaine, our Music Director and organist, who has given this parish many years of service, and even though we can only afford to pay her part time, she continues to give us full time attention. Many of you may have noticed a strange musician a couple of weekends ago; Mike Rodgers will be joining our Music Ministry in September, focusing on the 11:30 am Mass. Of course, our Music Ministry would not be complete without the volunteers who sing and play instruments, and without naming everyone, I have to mention Marybeth and Jack Dillon, who, in addition to help-ing out at the three Sunday morning Masses, rehearse the Youth Choir weekly, so that the performances on Sunday and Holi-days are spectacular. Within the context of the Mass, we have members of the Legion of Mary cleaning the church on a weekly basis, so that we can all enjoy a proper worship space. There are also Mass captains and teams assigned to each Mass, making certain that there are Lectors and Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion present for our worship. In addition to this, the ushers/ greeters are present to welcome regulars, returnees, new parishioners and visitors, and take up collections. Our sacristan John Harrison, has been volunteering in this ministry for years, making sure that bread and wine, vessels, and everything else ready to go before the Mass begins; on those occasions that he is not able to be here, his family has been ready to fill in. This is specifically true of his mother Denise, who is in charge of running the Rectory store. There are also those who make sure that the Eucharist is brought to those who cannot make it to worship with us, and the Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion visit homes, hospitals and nursing homes, literally bringing Christ with them. Others in the parish make sure that Christ’s poor are fed and taken care of, operating the parish food pantry, all as volunteers. We are a parish of volunteers, whether giving ourselves in the liturgy, outreach, religious education, or fixing up the physical plant, and whether it is our time, talent, or treasure that we share, or the gift of praying for our community, we all have a part to play in the life here at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. A great man once said, “Everyone… has their own particular part to play. No part is too great or too small, no one is too old or too young to do something.” Pax, Fr. Henry
