OUR LADY OF MERCY PARISH MISSION STATEMENT Our Lady of Mercy Parish is a Catholic community that worships God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, celebrating Mass, proclaiming the Gospel Message and uniting in prayer. We strive to welcome all and to educate ourselves and others in the Good News of Jesus Christ. We support one another in times of joy and sadness and attempt to serve each other by reaching out to those in need in our community and beyond. We are imperfect people on a journey. Our goal is that the life of each person leads to the Lord.
LET US PRAY In your love and kindness please pray for the sick of our parish, especially: Marie Barrett, Frank Dundin, Gloria Davino, Nate Schwabe, Theresa Delicce, Albert Buatti, Diane Callaghan, Kathryn Petrides, and for those intentions listed in the book of intentions in the Vestibule.
Please also remember the deceased of our parish and their families, especially: Patricia Palmieri.
Please join with us in praying one OUR FATHER per day for all those who have no one to pray for them.
THE SANCTUARY LAMPS IN CHURCH burn this week in memory of: Sheri Destro, Frieda & Gus Rau, and for Pablo Consolacion.
THE SANCTUARY LAMP IN THE CHAPEL burns this week in memory of Patricia Furletti.
If you would like more information about reserving a Sanctuary Lamp in memory of a loved one or for a Special Intention, please call the rectory office at 201-391-5315.

GOD’S PLAN FOR GIVING – Tithing
December 2nd Collection: $18,401 Same time last year: $18,001 Religious Retirement Fund: $ 5,038
Tithing is God’s plan to support His Church. Full tithing means 10% of gross income to God. We ask half of this, or 5%, for your Parish church. The other 5% goes to your favorite charities.
STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION
“And this is my prayer: that your love may increase ever more and more in knowledge and every kind of perception, to discern what is of value…” PHILIPPIANS 1:9-10 Glittery holiday ads can blind us to our stewardship values and distort our needs and wants. It is important that during this season of endless buying we remember that each of us also has the need to give back to God and to those that are in need.
There are consecrated low gluten hosts available at all our Sunday Liturgies. They are made available during the reception of Communion near the ramp.
SHARING GOD’S BLESSINGS — To date we have received $68,796 in pledges. Our goal is $99,592. Thank you to those parishioners who have already shown their support and generosity.
THE MIRACULOUS MEDAL NOVENA will be recited each Saturday in the Sacred Heart Chapel immediately following the 8:30AM Mass.
THE FAMILY OF GOD meets Tuesday at 7:30PM in the Chapel to praise God and pray for special intentions.
DAUGHTERS OF MARY meets Thursday mornings at 9:30AM in the Chapel.
IS RCIA FOR YOU? There are many reasons why you may want to become involved in the RCIA. Do any of these fit you?
• I have never been baptized.
• I am married to a Catholic and attend Mass, but just don’t know what the next step may be.
• I have been baptized in another Christian denomination and wish to become Catholic.
• I have been baptized Catholic, but have not received any other sacraments.
Do you know someone who might be interested in being in full communion with the Catholic Church? Ask, encourage and invite them to this program. The journey begins with one small step! Upcoming sessions: December 9th, January 6th at 10:30AM in the Parish Center. Call John Rokoszak at 201-391-3590 or [email protected] for more information.
MOTHER’S GROUPS meet day or evening for one hour each week. If interested in joining, please call Cathy Flynn at 201-391-1482.

FAITH FORMATION
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, On this Second Sunday of Advent, John the Baptist proclaims these words to us: “Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.” One big obstacle to such prepa-ration for eternal life is hate! As you may be aware, swastikas and racial slurs have been found in boys’ bathrooms over the last several weeks at Pascack Valley High School and more recently at Pas-cack Hills High School. I bring this up here because our parish encompasses much of the area served by both of these high schools, and local Clergy, including the priests of OLM, have been part of the conversation about these acts of hate. The School District has been laudably proactive in re-sponding with letters to parents, assemblies, educational efforts, etc. But in fact, our modern secular culture strug-gles to find a vocabulary that makes a coherent case for why hate and bias are wrong. In the face of hate, and ter-roristic acts, we sometimes hear in the political or social realm, that these acts or expressions are wrong because “they do not fit our values” – what values? Or, ”because they do not fit our culture” – what culture? Or, because, “this is not who we are” – so, who are we? Says who? Without a set of beliefs that recognizes that I am not the author of my life or the universe, it is hard to find a compelling answer to hate. And so it is a challenge for a secular response to say more than we should be “tolerant” of one another; we should be nice, because “it is not nice to not be nice.” Tolerance does not mean ignoring the one who is differ-ent from me in some way or simply not expressing hate. Rather, tolerance means engagement and encounter, that is, we acknowledge and recognize our differences, but we do so with respect and a desire to understand one anoth-er, regardless of our differences. We do not all need to become identical to one another in order to come to appre-ciate and even enter into friendship with one another. For believing Catholic Christians, this is a “no-brainer.” Tolerance is not a goal, because it does not encounter the other as a human being, as an equal. We do have a set of beliefs that recognizes that I am not the author of my life: What we believe and what is the foundation for all of our thoughts, words and deeds, is that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, took on our humanity – body and soul – like us in all things but sin and, in so doing, gave an irrevocable dig-nity to every human being, that is not to be broken – from conception to natural death. As we prepare for Second Coming of Our Lord and for His coming as an infant child at Christmas, let us be sure in our homes and in our workplaces, in our schools and in our streets, to manifest in our thoughts, words and deeds that Jesus is Lord, and the very basis for the irrevocable dignity of every man, woman and child – who are not to be merely “tolerated,” but to be encountered, respected and loved as our brothers and sisters created by one and the same God. God bless you all!

LAS POSADAS— Beginning December 16th at 7PM Las Posados (the inns or lodgings) is a customary Christmas novena, celebrated in many Latin American countries and Hispanic communities in the United States. Beginning nine days before Christmas, Las Po-sadas is a journey of faith and joy, shared by family, friends, and neighbors. Las Posadas forms the spiritu-ality that helps us identify with Mary and Joseph in their pilgrimage on the road to Bethlehem. Come join us as we prepare to celebrate the joys of Christmas: the baby in the manger, our Savior, and God made flesh.
SOCIAL JUSTICE & PEACE MINISTRY NEWS: The Triboro Food Pantry, Park Ridge was bustling with the many volunteers who organized the Thanksgiving donations filling the pantry shelves and refrigerators. Thank you for the generosity of parishioners of Our Lady of Mercy who donated turkeys and hams. The holiday donations were shared with our neighbors in need and their appreciation was deeply felt. The next SJPM Meeting will be Thursday, December 13 in the St. Mary’s Room at 7:15 P.M. We will finalize the or-ganization and delivery of Advent Giving Tree collec-tion. Many thanks to the KofC who helped set up AGTs trees year after year! Thank you to the members of the Art and Environment Ministry who partnered with SJPM to provide OLM with a spiritual journey to Christmas with prayer cards, Children’s Christmas ornaments, reflective banners and a prayer box to support each other in prayer.

Our speech and our behavior should be so strong and so appealing as to get people thinking of the Catholic faith that we profess, and the faith that makes us the kind and gracious persons that we are.
