A 26, 2020 2 — O L L V C C
The Third Sunday of Easter continues our celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus. In the Gospel according to St. Luke, which is being proclaimed this Sunday, we hear about two of Jesus’ disciples who were returning home to Emmaus that first day of the week. They were tired and distraught over the news that had been brought to them in the early morning. It was bad enough that their Master had been crucified, but now, three days later, his body was missing from its burial place… who could have done such a thing? While walking the seven-mile journey to Emmaus, the two disciples encountered a man who seemed to be unaware of all that happened concerning Jesus the past few days. The man, however, was aware that the Messiah would come and suffer a terrible fate, and he began to
remind the two disciples of all the Sacred Scripture passages that pertained to the Messiah. When they finally reached Emmaus, the disciples invited the man to have supper with them. As the man took and broke the bread at table to share with the disciples, they immediately became aware that it was Jesus who had been with them the whole time. He really is risen! The “breaking of bread” was the name the early Church used for what we today call, the “Mass”. Ever since Jesus instituted the Eucharist at the Last Supper, the Church has maintained the truth that the bread and wine of the Eucharist becomes the real and true presence of Jesus at every Mass. Through our faith today, we recognize the risen Jesus in the broken bread of the Eucharist as those two disciples did over 2000 years ago. Jesus is risen and is with us as He said he would be until the end of time. The one thing that I always think about is why didn’t the disciples recognize Jesus? After His resurrection, Jesus seemed to be able to come to people He knew, and yet be unrecognizable to them… not until he would reveal Himself to them… and in this case, through the breaking of bread. Because of this I often wonder if Jesus does not still come to us unrecognizable. Could He be the next person you meet? Could He indeed have been the stranger you recently met. Did I encounter Jesus whom I did not recognize? How did that encounter go? How did I treat Him? At the very least Jesus did say that whatever we do to the least of our brothers and sisters, we do to Him. It’s food for thought, anyway.
We are continuing to live this new life of socially distancing ourselves from one another and keeping ourselves isolated in our homes. This all certainly goes against the very fabric of life. God created us to be social creatures needing one another. Our Christian faith is founded in community and our love for God and each other. However, right now, it appears that our separation from each other is the best prevention we have from spreading the Coronavirus. Unfortunately, not being able to physically congregate at Mass, at least for the time being, is still something that we must endure. We also have heard the official announcement that students will not return to their classrooms for the rest of this school year. They will, however, continue their learning through on-line education. The most difficult and disappointing thing about all this is that the various activities and end of the year events cannot take place in their normal fashion. Events such as RCIA ceremonies, Confirmation, First Communion, May Crowning, and Kindergarten and Eighth Grade graduation ceremonies have been cancelled or postponed for the time being. We are, however, trying to figure out how and when we might still be able to make these events happen in some way. So, please bear with us. As we go through all this, I would like to share a short, little prayer I learned a long time ago that has been very helpful to me over the years, and I hope may be of some help to you too: “Lord, help me to remember that nothing is going to happen to me today, that together, you and I can’t handle.”… Amen.

An Act of Spiritual Communion
My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.
