Trump, announced that all U.S. and Nebraska flags are to be flown at half-staff in honor of the victims of the act of violence in Las Vegas, Nevada. “Please join Susanne and I in keeping the victims and families of the horrifying tragedy in Las Vegas in our thoughts and prayers,” said Governor Ricketts. Las Vegas was terrorized by a shooter who opened fire on a country music festival late Sunday night, killing at least 50 people and injur- ing at least 400 others according to news reports. Flags will be flown at half-staff until sunset on October 6, 2017. “MANUFACTURING MONTH” Governor Pete Ricketts proclaimed October as “Manufacturing Month” and announced a statewide tour in celebration of Ne- braska’s second largest industry. At the ceremony, Governor Ricketts was joined by Department of Economic Development Direc- tor Courtney Dentlinger, the Nebraska Chamber of Commerce, and the Nebraska Manufacturing Advisory Council. “Nebraska is a state known for growing things and making things,” said Governor Ricketts. “Throughout the month we’ll be celebrating our manufac- turers who are making world-class equipment and growing great job opportunities across our state. There are 97,000 Nebraskans employed in our manufacturing industry. Whether it’s assembling cargo doors for Kawasaki’s first American aerospace division in Lincoln, welding livestock headgates at Pearson’s in Thedford, or constructing center pivot irrigation equipment at Valmont in McCook, Nebraska’s manufacturers contribute $13 billion annually towards growing our state.” “Exposing young people to careers in our state’s second largest industry is essential in order to recruit new talent into Nebraska’s workforce,” said Director Dentlinger. “Manufacturing Month allows students a first-hand opportunity to learn more about what makes our manufacturing businesses success- ful, such as new technology, growing investment opportunities, and most importantly, the skilled workers and leaders fueling this indus- try. It’s also an important first step in facilitating relationships be- tween students, businesses and educators, which continues to be a top priority among our team at DED.” NEW INCENTIVES Nebraska’s corrections department is offering new incentives to try to fix employee recruiting challenges and high turnover rates at the state’s two largest prisons. The Department of Correctional Services is offering a $2,500 signing bonus to the first 100 new employees hired between Monday and Nov. 17 to work at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution and the Nebraska State Penitentiary. The department will also pay experience-based merit raises to staff members the Tecumseh prison. Employees with one to three years of service will get a 2.5 percent raise, and the amount will increase up to a 10 percent for employees with more than 10 years of service. Department officials hope the incentives will help fill open jobs, which could save money by reducing employee overtime costs. Handshakes were originally meant to make sure that the per-

son you were meeting wasn’t carrying a concealed weapon.

The hand clasp proved that your hand was empty and shaking

was meant to dislodge any weapons hiding up the sleeve.

The McCook Lady Bison golfers finished fourth at the Class

B4 district meet in Sidney yesterday. Scottsbluff, Sidney and

Gering qualified their entire teams with top three finishes.

Bison seniors Cassidy Redl and Holland Stagemeyer both

qualified for the state meet with top ten medals. Pairings

for the Class B6 district softball tournament were released

yesterday. The MHS Lady Bison are the second seed and will

face Scottsbluff in their first game on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.

North Platte is the top seed. Listen for coverage of the dis-

trict tournament on 96.1 KICX Thursday and Friday.

The Nebraska football team practiced for 90 minutes with

full pads and helmets on Monday evening. The offense was

on the Ed and Joyanne Gass Practice Field and the defense

was in the Hawks Championship Center. Offensive Coordi-

nator Danny Lansgdorf spoke to the media after practice

about what the preparation for Wisconsin will be like. “I

think as freshman, every game is kind of a new experience

for them, Langsdorf said. "We’ve really been preaching that

if we do the same thing a week and we prepare the same

way then it is another game. Everybody will make it a big

game but we don’t have to prepare harder for Wisconsin

than we did for Illinois. That’s really been the way that we

approach it, that we want it to be the same every week and

then we really don’t have to get up for the big game and act

different and give more speeches or do anything crazy.”
