November 20, 2016 • Feast Of The Christ The King Sunday 3
A Note From The Pastor… This Sunday is the 34th, or Last Sunday in Ordinary Time.
We celebrate the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of
the Universe, also known as Christ the King. We celebrate
Jesus’ Lordship of the Universe. In His First Coming, Jesus
appeared as the Merciful Savior, but one day He will return to
judge the living and the dead, and establish His Lordship in its
fullness. In observance of this great celebra"on, there will be a
Holy Hour in the Church, beginning at 7PM, and closing with
Benedic"on at 8PM, this Sunday, November 20th. All are
Welcome.
Ordinary Time will end next Saturday evening when we
celebrate the Vigil Mass for the First Sunday of Advent. I
encourage you to begin thinking and planning now how you
might prepare for celebra"ng the Birth of the Lord Jesus.
Spending more "me in prayer, and slowing down for reflec"on are essen"al if we are to have a
meaningful and joyful celebra"on on December 25th.
This weekend at all of our Masses (except 7AM), we welcome our Religious Educa"on and Our
Lady of Humility School Confirma"on Candidates and their Sponsors for the Rite of Enrollment.
Our Candidates will officially commit to enter into prepara"ons for receiving the Sacrament of
Confirma"on next year by Bishop George Rassas on Saturday, May 13, 2017. Please keep them in
your prayers, that they may lead lives truly dedicated to God.
This Thursday, November 24th, we celebrate Thanksgiving. It’s a day to pause and give thanks
to God for the many blessings He has bestowed upon us and our country. According to
Wikipedia: Thanksgiving has been celebrated na!onally on and off since 1789, a#er a
proclama!on by George Washington. It has been celebrated as a federal holiday every year since
1863, when, during the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a na!onal day
of “Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens,” to be
celebrated on the last Thursday in November. There will only be a 9AM Mass on Thanksgiving
Day.
This weekend we have the Annual Collec"on for the Catholic Campaign for Human
Development [CCHD]. CCHD is the na"onal an"-poverty program of the U.S. Catholic Bishops.
Please consider giving to help fund programs that help reduce poverty in the United States.
As we con"nue on through this month of November, let us pray for our beloved dead, and
reach out to all those in need.
God Bless,
Fr. Paul

one week, and are facilitated by
members of the Our Lady of Humility
Legion of Mary.
There are prayers for both the arrival

Families are encouraged to pray the

November 20, 2016 • Feast Of The Christ The King Sunday 9
“Infinite Mercy” By Msgr. Charles Pope Msgr. Charles Pope, is the Pastor of Holy Comforter, St. Cyprian, a Parish community in
Washington, D.C.
What is the value of one prayer? I suspect it is far greater than any of us imagine. Prayer
changes things, some"mes in obvious ways, more o<en in subtle and even paradoxical ways.
But prayer is surely important, even when we don’t experience its’ immediate effects. Perhaps
this is why Jesus taught us to pray always, and never to lose heart (see Luke 18:1). St. Paul echoed this with the
simple exhorta"on “Pray constantly”. Perhaps our simple u#erance at the end of a decade of the Rosary to “save
us from the fires of hell, and lead all souls to heaven” will reach the heart of one lost soul, promp"ng him to answer the gentle call
of God to return. Imagine if someday in heaven that very sinner comes up to you and says, “Though we never met, your prayer
reached me and God applied His power to me.” Imagine the joy of many such mee"ngs in heaven. Imagine, too, whom you will
joyfully thank for their prayers, people you know, and some you never met. But they prayed, and the power of their prayers
reached you.
So to pray for the living is a great and wondrous Spiritual Work of Mercy; its value is beyond gold or pearls. The prayer of a
righteous man has great power in its effects (James 5:16). Prayer can avert war, bring healing, cause conversion, bestow peace
and serenity, and call down Mercy—Sweet, necessary, and beau"ful Mercy. The value of prayer can never be told. Praying for the
dead, however, is a Spiritual Work of Mercy, that has suffered in recent decades. Too many Catholics today “miss a step” when
loved ones die. There are o<en immediate declara"ons that the deceased are in “heaven”, but Scripture does not say that we go
right to heaven when we die. No, indeed, there is a brief stopover at the judgment seat of Christ. And that is worth praying about!
Pray o<en for the Souls in Purgatory. Surely there are joys there for them, knowing that they are on their way to heaven. Yes,
there is fire, but thank God it is a healing fire. There are tears, too, for Scripture says (regarding the dead), that Jesus “will wipe
away every tear from their eyes” (–Revela"ons 21:4). Praying for the dead, then, is the last and greatest Spiritual
Work of Mercy. —Submi#ed by Irene Halteman
Note: I am thankful for all of the comments I received from parishioners in reading the Mercy
Ar"cles in our Bulle"n. It was a great 4 months, August through November 20th, which will be the Last
Mercy Sunday, as Advent begins a new season. May I leave you with a Sr. Faus"na Gem: “I will show
my gra!tude unceasingly to God for His great Mercy towards me.” (Diary, 224). —Irene Halteman
Feast Of Our Lady Of Guadalupe This year our Parish will be celebra"ng this beau"ful Marian Feast Day on Monday, December 12th.

*********************************************************************************************************
In 1531, a “Lady from Heaven” appeared to Juan Diego, a humble Na"ve American at Tepeyac, a hill northwest of what is
now Mexico City. She iden"fied Herself as the ever Virgin Holy Mary, Mother of the True God for whom we live, of the Creator of
all things, Lord of heaven and earth. She made a request for a Church to be built on the site, and Juan Diego submi#ed Her wish
to the local Bishop. When the Bishop hesitated, and requested a sign, the Mother of God obeyed without delay or ques"on,
sending Her na"ve messenger to the top of the hill in mid-December to gather an assortment of roses for the Bishop.
A<er complying to the request for a sign, She le< for us an image of Herself imprinted miraculously on the na"ve’s !lma, a
poor quality cactus-cloth, which should have deteriorated in 20 years, but shows no sign of decay a<er more than 475 years
later. It s"ll defies all scien"fic explana"ons of its’ origin.
Her message is of love and compassion, and a universal promise of help and protec"on to all mankind. An incredible list of
miracles, cures, and interven"ons are a#ributed to Her. Yearly, an es"mated 10 million visit Her Basilica, making Her Mexico City
home the most popular Marian Shrine in the world, and the most visited Catholic Church in the world next to the Va"can.
The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe is celebrated on December 12th. In 1999, Pope John Paul II, in his homily from the
Solemn Mass at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, during his third visit to the sanctuary, declared the date of December the
12th as a Liturgical Holy Day for the whole con"nent. During the same visit, Pope John Paul II entrusted the cause of life to Her
loving protec"on, and placed under Her motherly care the innocent lives of children, especially those who are in danger of not
being born.
“Let not your heart be disturbed. Do not fear that nor any other sickness or anguish. Am I not here, who am your Mother? Are
you not under my protec!on? Am I not your health? Are you not happily within my fold? What else do you wish? Do not grieve
nor be disturbed by anything.” (Words of Our Lady to Juan Diego) Informa"on obtained from: Our Lady of Guadalupe –
