Dear Family,
Family life is one of those realities that shows love’s true nature. Between arguments, distractions,
and numerous obligations, love is shown in a family’s dynamics for what it is: persevering and
marked by sacrifices. Is it any wonder that the Church refers to each family as a “Domestic
Church?” Family life is the first place we learn what it is to develop a relationship with God as it
was intended: through our relationships with others. We learn that living the Gospel is not just
about accepting ideas but about constant service to others in the chaos that is community living. It
should console us to know that the Holy Family also did not have it easy. Sure they are depicted in
art as always sentimental and serene, but their lives were anything but normal, routine, or perfect.
Even in this great example of God’s grace at play in human history the challenges that Mary,
Joseph, and Jesus shared were many and monumental. They did have one thing going for them,
however, they had one rule: God’s truth came first. Their loyalty, respect and sacrifices made for
each other was an expression of a deeper love for God and in obedience to His will. All families
are called to live out Our Lord’s teachings in their day to day decision making and through their
actions and words. Above all, the Holy Family stands as an example that each family can make
Christ present, even in the midst of life’s challenges, by choosing His truth and love as a way of
life.
In his joy, Fr Daniel
