Dear Family,

The late Cardinal George once said, “We are living in a nation where everything is permissible, but nothing is forgivable.” It’s an inter-

esting statement when you stop to think about it. Coupled with how virtual our communication has become, it is now as easy to chew

someone out and show your disapproval with the click of a button. People are ridiculed viciously for what they say and do, with people

so easily jumping on the train as it costs them little to nothing to throw their own set of daggers. And while it is good and even healthy

that we get angry at injustice and even confront it, do we take care to do so with an eye toward mercy, toward reconciliation? In the pur-

suit of calling out the evil in the world and ensuring that it is stopped, do we forget the person. Jesus reminds us of this timeless truth in

the famous parable of the Prodigal Son. While the main focus is on the son who sins, and in his sorrow is met with the father’s mercy, the

other son is not having it. He’s upset and understandably so, but displays in his actions and words that his vision is different from the

father’s. He even begins to write off the relationship they share as he refers to his brother as “your son.” The father responds by remind-

ing him that he remains his brother and that he “has come to life again.” The father invites his other son to a broader vision for reconcilia-

tion fueled by hope. While it is a noble thing to live virtuously, mindful of our responsibilities, it is also a higher good yet to reconcile

where it is possible especially for those who show contrition and are in need of healing. We are called to seek good and reject evil, but at

no time can we identify a person by their own sin as in the Father’s sight they are only ever His children, and if His children, then our

siblings? Now in this Lenten season, is the ideal time we resolve to always be agents and not adversaries of reconciliation.

In His joy, Fr. Daniel
