Our Lady of Grace Parish - March 3, 2019

A Letter from our Pastor . . . Dear Parishioners of Our Lady of Grace, Ash Wednesday is the beginning of the season of Lent. Lent is a forty-day peri-od of preparation for the celebration of Easter, the Paschal Mystery, which is the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ. We celebrate Easter by renewing our Baptismal Promises, first by renouncing sin, renouncing the seduc-tion of evil and rejecting Satan, the author and prince of sin. Then we are asked to renew our faith in God–Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Namely, that we believe in God and renew our commitment to live as true sons and daughters of God in this world. Notice that the Baptismal Promises are twofold: rejecting sin and believing in God. We can consider the discipline and penance of Lent as our efforts to reject sin in our lives. Therefore Lent is called a “penitential season”, a time to do pen-ance. On Ash Wednesday we have ashes rubbed onto our foreheads in the sign of a Cross as a call to ourselves that we must repent and believe, and that we are mor-tal “dust” and will one day return to dust. Now is the time to return to the Lord. There are three traditional penitential practices associated with Lent: Prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Prayer is a call to talk with God. Fasting is a call to give up things which we do not really need and certainly to work on overcoming our bad habits. Almsgiving is a call to give generously to the poor and needy. Each of these aspects should form part of your Lenten season. Lent is not an end in itself. Lent is given to help us prepare for the joy and glory of Easter, so that our efforts to pray more, to give up things and to be more charita-ble are all done so that we can be worthy to rejoice in the ultimate gift of salvation that Jesus has won for us in His Passion, Death and Resurrection. In Christ, Fr.
