Dear Parishioners of Good Counsel:

Last Sunday May 24, was the Solemnity of the Ascension, when we remember a

time of change and uncertainty for the early Church. It was a time of transition.

The apostles had spent time with the Lord Jesus, but now he was ascending to

the Father. He promised to be with the Church and to provide for it, even as he

sent it out to make disciples of all nations. All of the apostles’ plans had been

changed. This summer is a time of change for us as we say good bye to Father

Josh Stengel grateful for his faithful and loving service to Our Lady of Good Coun-

sel and as you welcome a new pastor among you. Neither Father Josh nor I had

any idea that we would be experiencing assignment changes when we discussed

Queridos feligreses de Nuestra Señora del Buen Consejo,

Este domingo 24 de mayo es la Solemnidad de la Ascensión en la cual recordamos

un tiempo de cambio e incertidumbre para la antigua Iglesia. Fue un tiempo de

transición. Los apóstoles habían pasado tiempo con nuestro Señor Jesucristo,

pero ahora ascendía a nuestro Padre. Prometió estar con la Iglesia y proveer al

mismo tiempo que al hacer discípulos de todas las naciones. Todos los planes de

los apóstoles cambiaron. Esta semana será un tiempo de cambio para nosotros al

despedirnos del Padre Josué Stengel con agradecimiento por su leal y amoroso

servicio a Nuestra Señora del Buen Consejo mientras dan la bienvenida a un nue-

vo pastor entre ustedes. Ni el Padre Josué ni yo teníamos idea del cambio que

estaría sucediendo cuando hubo cambio de asignatura mientras platicábamos

sobre la misa de 10:30 AM el 24 de mayo, para celebrar mi Jubileo de Plata como

sacerdote. Ninguno de los dos teníamos idea del cambio mientras le comenté

que tendríamos que cancelar mi Jubileo de Plata debido a la pandemia Covid-19.

La realidad de nuestra vida como sacerdotes es que ninguno sabe el momento en

el cual se nos pedirá hacer un cambio e ir a algún otro lugar. Lo que si sabemos es

Jubilee as a priest. Neither of us had any idea of a change coming! A reality of our lives when I told

him that due to the Covid-19 pandemic, I would have to cancel my Silver Jubilee celebration. A re-

ality of our lives as priests is that none of us know the moment we will be asked to change and go

somewhere else. We do know that we meet the Lord in the women, men, and children we are

blessed to serve. We discover his will for us not in the moment when we want to know all of the

reasons why, but we discern it only after we have followed his will for us. As I return to serve as

your pastor of Good Counsel, I can’t help remembering twenty years ago when Bishop Sartain

asked me to become pastor of Good Counsel. It was a blessing then and is a blessing now to be

among you. Let us pray for each other during this time of transition.

¡Hola Familia del Buen

Consejo! Espero se encuen-

tren bien dentro de lo que ca-

be en estos días de epidemia.

Hoy no tengo mucho que de-

cir, dado al tiempo que esta-

mos viviendo. Es muy triste

ver cómo nos estamos enfer-

mando y cada día los núme-

ros están aumentando y al-

gunos pasando a mejor vida.

Este 2020 vino con muchas

sorpresas en todo el mundo y

aquí en Nuestra Señora del

Buen Consejo, se suspendie-

ron clases de catecismo, las

estaciones de la Cruz, Domin-

go de Ramos, Triduo Pascual,

las Misas dominicales, en fin

todos los eventos de la Parro-

quia. Todo esto con el fin de

proteger a los feligreses de

contraer la enfermedad. Otra

sorpresa fue el cambio de Sa-

cerdote, así que en estos mo-

mentos estamos viviendo una

vida de cambios, menos gente

en la iglesia, (distancia social )

usando cubrebocas, desinfec-

tar el lugar donde uno se sien-

ta, hasta este momento no

sabemos cuando iniciaremos

Hello Parish Family! I

hope you are doing well in the

day of pandemic, I don’t have

much to talk about today, be-

cause of the time we are living

in, it is very sad to see how we

are getting sick, everyday the

numbers are increasing, and

some go on to better lives.

This 2020 came with many

surprises around the world

and especially here at Our La-

dy of Good Counsel. Cate-

chism classes were suspend-

ed, the station of the cross,

Palm Sunday, Paschal Tridu-

um, Sunday Masses, and all

the Parish events were can-

celled. All of this was with the

purpose to protect the parish-

ioners from contracting the

virus. Another surprise was

the change of priest, so right

now we are living a life of

changes, less people in

church, social distance, using

face masks, disinfecting the

place where you sit, etc. Even

now we do not know when

we will start with catechism.

For now, we have already

done Confirmation, consider-

ing all recommendations from

the Health Department and

Bishop Taylor’s directions.

tante ayuda de diferentes lu-

gares. Solo Dios sabe porque

suceden las cosas. También

bendita sea tecnología porque

gracias al avance tecnológico

mucha gente se benefició con

las misas, rosarios y oraciones

etc. en internet, y así se ali-

mentaron espiritualmente.

Por lo pronto lo que nos que-

da es cuidarnos y tener con-

fianza en el Señor y esperar

por su providencia, vivir sin

preocuparnos porque solo

Dios es el único que tiene el

control de todo.

Cuídense mucho y Dios los

bendiga, les deseo mucha, sa-

lud y bienestar, ¡No pierdan

su fe! Y por favor Usen su cu-

brebocas

Blessed be Covid–19 if we

look at it in a positive way,

it gave families an opportunity

to come together, the children

studying at home, unfortu-

nately some family parents

were left without work, but

the Lord did not leave them

alone, there was enough help

from different places, only

God knows why things hap-

pen. Also blessed be technolo-

gy because thanks to it many

people have benefitted from

Masses, rosaries prayers, etc.,

on the internet, and thus they

felt good spiritually. For now,

we only must take care of

ourselves and trust in the

Lord and wait for his provi-

dence, live without worrying

because GOD IS THE ONLY

ONE WHO HAS CONTROL OF

EVERYTHING. Well take good

care of yourselves, I wish you

much health and well-being.

2020 Rummage Sale

Remaining hopeful and optimistic for God’s perfect

timing in all things, we are beginning to plan for an-

other edition of the annual OLGC fall Rummage Sale!

Praying that COVID will abate, we are making plans

for very vigilant and careful procedures for set-up,

shopping and check– out, with much greater spacing

for social distancing, and gloves/masks for all volun-

teers and shoppers. Please join us in praying for a

safe, awesome sale for the benefit of our parish and

our neighborhood.

May God bless us all, donors, volunteers, and shop-

pers alike, for a safe and joyful rummage sale season!

How can I help? In several ways!

PRAY– For God’s guidance, that all would be wise

and careful in protecting ourselves and our loved

ones

DONATIONS– Hopefully the shut–down gave us

all time for cleaning, and many items are ready

for a new home! After Mass drop-offs begin in

August, and home pick-up is available now!

LARGE ITEMS and FURNITURE can also be accept-

ed now! Please call 501-920-2483 for details.

SET-UP– Once the date looks firm, we will begin

setting up the gym areas for optimal spacing,

safety, and efficiency for our shoppers and volun-

teers. Please watch the bulletin for specifics; work

sessions will be held at various times during Sep-

tember.

SALE DATES will hopefully be September 25-26-

27, the last weekend of September! If that is not a

safe time for the sale, preparations will be put on

hold until the soonest possible weekend.

Sale Schedule will be as follows:

FRIDAY– 5-8pm PRE-SALE (admission $5)

SATURDAY– 8am– 4pm Regular Sale (no admission charge)

SUNDAY– 8am– 2pm Half-Price Sale!

Sunday 2-3pm– Charities may pick up items for their ministry, at no charge.

Sunday 3pm– all leftover items are FREE AT THREE! (Social Distancing required!)

Baby’s First Existential Crisis

It was November 2019, right before Thanksgiving. Ian was 2 months shy of 4 years. We were driving from McMath Library to Wal-Mart when he asked, “mami… am I going to die?” I panic and replied “I mean… not right now!”

After wrecking my brain, I re-alized in McMath he had seen the cover of a graphic novel named “Maus” and he asked what it was about. The cover displays an evil look-ing kitty with a tiny mustache and a swastika behind him. Since I have read the book, I told him it was about a man named Hitler who, a long time ago, killed a lot of people because of their beliefs. The author depicted Hit-ler as a mean cat and the Jewish peo-

ple as little mice, and it is the author’s parent’s own story.

However, the question in the car caught me by surprise. Mortality was not something I contemplated regularly. I tried my absolute best to calm his panic attack, his little body yelling, crying, shaking, and sweating. I told him, once he lived a full happy life, when he was wise and old, then he would die. He would go to Heaven, where we all gather with God in hap-piness. I realize we’re not all afforded that timeline; but those are my hopes and prayers for him and, dear reader, I was trying to calm a panicked child.

I am only sharing this because it now seems so ominous of our cur-

rent situation. We must be in con-stant awareness of our own and each other’s mortality. We do our best to stay at home as much as we can; we wear masks and distance from others when we are in public. We wash and sanitize our hands as much as possi-ble. I know some of you may be in disbelief or denial of our current situ-ation– but I beg you to think of others and wear the mask. When I told Ian he would live to be old and wise– please help make that true for him. I do not wont him, or you for that matter, to succumb to a preventable disease.

La primera crisis existencial de bebé

Sucedió en noviembre 2019, justo an-tes de acción de gracias. A Ian le falta-ban 2 meses para cumplir sus 4 añitos. Estábamos de rumbo de la biblioteca McMath a Wal-Mart cuando me pre-gunto, “mami… ¿me voy a morir?” Entré un poco en pánico y conteste, “ósea, ahorita ahorita, ¡no!”

Después de pensarle mucho que fue lo que provocó la pregunta, me di cuenta que habíamos visto la portada de una novela gráfica llamada Maus y me pre-guntó de que trataba el libro. La por-tada muestra un gato con cara malva-da con bigote chiquito y la esvástica detrás de él. Como he leído el libro, le conté que se trataba de un señor lla-mado Hitler, quien, hace mucho tiem-po mató mucha gente por su fe. El autor represento a Hitler como un gato malvado y a la gente judía como

ratoncitos y está basado en la vida real de los padres del autor.

Aun así, la pregunta en el carro me sorprendió. La mortalidad no es algo que contemplo a diario. Hice mi mejor esfuerzo para calmar su ataque de pánico—su pequeño cuerpo gritaba, lloraba, temblaba y sudaba. Le dije que todavía le faltan muchas expe-riencias por vivir- ir a la escuela, aprender, viajar, enamorarse. Le dije que ya cuando hubiese vivido una vida feliz y plena, cuando fuese un señor sabio y viejecito, entonces moriría. Iría al Cielo, donde todos nos uniremos con Dios en felicidad eterna. Me doy cuenta que no a todos se nos permite vivir ese marco de tiempo; pero queri-do/a lector/a, trataba de calmar a un niño en pánico.

Solo les comparto esto porque ahora todo eso parece un mal presagio de nuestra situación actual. Debemos estar percatados constantemente de la mortalidad propia y ajena. Hacemos nuestros mejores esfuerzos de que-darnos en casa, de ponernos cubrebo-cas y distanciarnos de otros en públi-co. Nos lavamos y desinfectamos las manos a cada rato. Se que hay incré-dulos de nuestra situación actual, pero les ruego que piensen en los demás y porten el cubrebocas. Cuando le dije a Ian que viviría a viejito y sabio, por favor ayúdenme a que esto sea una realidad para él. No quiero que él, ni ninguno de ustedes, sucumban a una enfermedad prevenible.

Stained Glass Ministry

Pese al cierre de los eventos parro-

quiales e incluso de los funerales de-

bido a COVID, el Ministerio de Vitral

de Ntra. Sra. del Buen Consejo aun

encontró maneras de mostrar el amor

de Dios a través de la hospitalidad y el

servicio. Bajo el liderazgo de Sonny

Scott, dos viernes de mayo mas de

una docena de miembros proveyeron

paquetes de atención con comida ca-

liente, víveres y artículos de limpieza

para nuestros feligreses necesitados.

Gracias a una encuesta telefónica pe-

dida por el Padre Josué y realizada por

la secretaria parroquial Carol Miller y

directora de educación religiosa María

Luna, el equipo tuvo una lista de ho-

gares listos para aceptar un gesto de

apoyo en esta temporada difícil. Una

abundancia de comida preparada,

despensas, cariñitos, cubrebocas,

guantes y útiles domésticos se reco-

lectaron en la cafetería, organizados y

luego recogidos o llevados a cada ho-

gar. Muchos de nuestros feligreses de

la tercera edad que han estado aisla-

dos por el paro debido al coronavirus

recibieron una amigable visita a su

puerta al recibir cajas de despensa.

nes de nuestra familia parroquial de

Ntra. Sra. del Buen Consejo. El Minis-

terio de Vitral de Ntra. Sra. del Buen

Consejo anhela servir en persona du-

rante las cenas fúnebres, celebracio-

nes sacramentales y eventos parro-

quiales del futuro. Pero por ahora,

¡buscaremos maneras creativas de

compartir nuestros dones de hospita-

lidad con la familia de Dios!

With the shut-down of the parish

events and even of funerals during

the COVID season, the OLGC

Stained Glass Ministry team still

found ways to show God’s love

through the service of hospitality

and caring! Under the leadership of

chairman Sonny Scott, on two Fri-

days in May, more than a dozen

team members came together to

provide care packages of hot food,

groceries, and sanitizing essentials

for parishioners in need. Thanks to

a phone survey requested by Fa-

ther Josh and carried out by parish

secretary Carol Miller and PRE Di-

rector Maria Luna, the team had a

list of households willing to accept

a gesture of support in this difficult

time. An abundance of prepared

food, groceries, pantry staples,

treats, masks, gloves, and house-

hold supplies was collected in the

cafeteria, sorted out and then

picked up or home delivered to

each home. Many senior parish-

ioners who have been isolated by

the COVID shutdown received a

friendly visit at their door, as food

boxes were delivered. Some fami-

lies received care and help in times

of unexpected crisis, and all re-

ceived the love and prayers of the

Good Counsel parish family. The

Stained Glass Ministry looks for-

ward to serving in-person at funer-

al dinners, sacramental celebra-

tions, and parish events in the fu-

ture. But in the meantime, we will

be on the lookout for other crea-

tive ways to share the joyful gift of

hospitality in God’s family!

Youth Ministry

This has been the craziest

year of my life. From having

my daughter in September,

to taking our largest group

ever to Weekend for Life, and

now a global pandemic. De-

spite all of the craziness one

thing remains the same, our

youth need us, they need the

church. This fall youth will

continue. It may look differ-

ent than we are all used to

but, the message will still re-

main the same: You are good

and you are worthy of God’s

love. If you would like to keep
