**** FROM THE PASTOR ****
6th Sunday of Easter
My Dear Brothers and Sisters, as I look at our 2nd reading and today’s Gospel reading I’m reminding of the Beatles song, “All You
Need is Love”. But, long before the Beatles sang about all you need is love St. John the Evangelist wrote about what Our Lord,
Jesus, said about love. Jesus taught us that God is love. That God loves us. As he says in his First Letter today: “. . . love is of God;
everyone who loves is begotten by God and knows God”. In the Gospel Jesus tells us: “As the Father loves me, so I also love you.
. . . This is my commandment: love one another as I love you”.
Jesus in our Gospel today reminds us that it was He who chose us to be His disciples. He chose us out of love so that we could
be His love and presence in the world. He chose us to go and bear fruit in his name. In a few weeks we will celebrate the Feast
of Pentecost. This Feast reminds us that we, through our Baptism and Confirmation, have been empowered with the Gifts of the
Holy Spirit. These gifts enable us to witness to the Gospel of love in our daily lives. Let us be transformed this Easter Season in
the power that Jesus has given us. Let us go forth and bear fruit, the fruit that Jesus trusts us to produce in the world to bring His
Love to all people.
Congratulations to our First Communicants
We want to congratulate our children who made their First Communion on Saturday. We are so proud of all of you. May God bless
you and your families. The names of our First Communicants will be listed below.
Certificate of Sponsorship for Baptism and Confirmation
Every year the issue of being a sponsor for Baptism or Confirmation comes up. I want to repeat what I wrote last year to help people
with this question. Many people come and ask for a Certificate of Sponsorship for Baptism or Confirmation. This Certificate is
issued to ensure that only those qualified to be a sponsor for a sacrament can do so. The Certificate states that the person is a
member of the parish that issues it and is a practicing Catholic, who has received the Sacraments of Initiation.
What does this mean, it means that the person requesting the certificate has received all the Sacraments of Initiation, they must have
received Baptism, Holy Communion and Confirmation. Also, by Church law they must be 16 years or older.
What does being a practicing Catholic mean? A practicing Catholic is one who attends mass each week and is not impeded from
receiving the sacraments. As an example, someone who is Catholic and has been married outside the Church or is divorced and
remarried outside the Church cannot be a Sponsor for Baptism or Confirmation.
This also means that to issue a certificate a person must be a registered member of the parish. If the person is an adult that person
must register themselves in the parish they live in. If the person is a student living at their parent’s home, they must be registered
under their parents’ address. However, once they become an adult out of school they should register under their own name even
if living at their parent’s home.
A lot of people will come looking for a certificate and will state, “Father I received my Communion and Confirmation in your parish,
but I moved away from the town”. A person who has moved out of parish must register themselves in their new parish and receive
their certificate from the parish where they are now living. I suggest that if you have relatives who have moved out of the parish
tell them that they should register in their new parish if they wish to be a sponsor someday.
Let me say to the parents of those to be Baptized or Confirmed. When you are thinking about who to ask to be a Godparent for
Baptism or Sponsor for Confirmation be sure, before you ask them, that they meet the criteria stated above.
A sponsor for either Baptism or Confirmation is standing up before the Lord and stating their Faith and a commitment to be a
witness in their daily lives to the person they are Godparent or Sponsor for to the faith they are receiving in the Sacrament. It is
not an honorary title it is a commitment and a responsibility.
Finally, for the above reasons we cannot issue a Certificate of Sponsorship to someone who is not a member of the Parish or does
not meet all the criteria to be a sponsor. When the priest signs a Certificate, he is making a declaration before the Lord that he
knows that this person is qualified to be a Sponsor.
May God bless you,
Fr. Stephen Cinque 5 86
