INFANT BAPTISMS For children under 7 years of age, the sacrament is celebrated the FIRST Sunday of the month at 2:00 pm. The parents must register in the parish office at least 4 weeks prior to the baptism. Both parents and godparents are expected to attend one catechetical session in advance, on the Wednesday before the baptism, at 7:00 pm.

SACRAMENTS OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION Before being fully initiated into the sacramental life of the Church, children over the age of 7 will need catechetical prepa-ration through the RCIC process. Teenagers and adults will par-ticipate in separate RCIA processes. CONFIRMATION and COMMUNION For those already baptized, preparation for these Sacraments will take place according to the person’s age and knowledge of the Catholic Faith. For further information contact the Office of Faith Formation Program.

MARRIAGES Couples should contact the parish office at least six months in advance to make the proper ar rangements for the Sacrament of Matrimony.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Dear Parishioners, What is the American Dream? We may think of a house with a white picket fence and living a comfortable life. Our readings today give an image of ways that we can manage our house and the way we live our lives. Martha in the first reading seems to me to be the type of person who had a strong desire to have her house neat and orderly. The two sisters are examples of the ac-tive and contemplative approaches in life. Both of these ways of managing our lives are needed. Jesus communicated to Martha that at that time while he was teaching, listening and thinking about what he was saying was more important than the management that was taking her away from listening to him. The first reading about Abraham demonstrates the importance of showing hospitality or care for others who we meet in life. We read that Abraham, “…ran from the en-trance of the tent to greet them;…” When I think of the message of the examples of Mary, Martha and Abraham in today’s scrip-tures, I relate them to three stories in the news this past week in our country. These stories are about Jeffrey Epstein, Eric Garner and the ICE raids. All of these cases have make us aware of the need to think of how people are being treated in our society. The influence of money can ex-cuse the crime of abusing others. Mr. Epstein was a sex trafficker who was not prosecuted fully for his crimes because of money and influence. Eric Garner was suspected of selling single ciga-rettes from packs without tax stamps. He resisted arrest and a chokehold was put on him by a police officer and other actions causing an asthma attack. The medical examiner ruled his death as a homicide. The decision last Tuesday was the Justice Department will not charge the police in connection with Eric Garner’s death. Finally ten cities have been targeted for ICE raids to de-port immigrants that are not here legally without regard to their family situations. One of the prin-ciples of Catholic Social Teaching on Immigration is, “A country must regulate its borders with justice and mercy.” This principle is from the U.S. bishops' pastoral statement Welcoming the Stranger Among Us:…” As we consider the ways people are treated in our country, we need to continually look at Je-sus and ask for his guidance that there may be law and order but also that we may run our house with mercy and the love of Christ.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION There’s a different pace to a summer Sunday, especially on those days when we dream of air conditioning and wave any available paper to stir the air. Yet we persist in gathering, even with so many breaks from the usual routines. We distance ourselves not only from routines, but from schedules and familiar well-worn paths. These are playful days and contemplative days. We see long-lost friends and visit almost-forgotten places. We have more leisure than any people before in the history of the world, and we need it because our lives are so care-worn and tiring. More of us walk barefoot and look up at the stars or dip our toes in the lake or sea, sing around campfires, read novels on the beach, and eat comfort food with our fingers. We see how beautiful life can be, and are more aware than usual of how God is always breaking in with signs of love. In Genesis today, Abraham and Sarah practice hospitality to their visitors, who turn out to be God dropping in. During the summer months, God practices hospitality in return, inviting us into a sea-son of celebration. Keeping Sunday holy is a good habit to cultivate in these days when our spirits are especially receptive to God’s deep desire for us to know divine love.

DEL ESCRITORIO DEL PÁRROCO

Queridos feligreses, ¿Qué es el sueño americano? Podiamos pensar en una casa con una cerca blanca y vivir una vida cómoda. Nuestras lecturas de hoy brindan una imagen de las formas en que podemos admin-istrar nuestra casa y la forma en que vivimos nuestras vidas. En la primera lectura Marta me parece ser el tipo de persona que tenía un fuerte deseo de tener su casa limpia y ordenada. Las dos her-manas son ejemplos de los enfoques activos y contemplativos de la vida. Ambas formas de admin-istrar nuestras vidas son necesarias. Jesús le comunicó a Marta que en ese momento, mientras enseñaba, escuchaba y pensaba sobre lo que decía, era más importante que el manejo que la ale-jaba de escucharlo. La primera lectura sobre Abraham demuestra la importancia de mostrar hospital-idad o cuidado por los demás que conocemos en la vida. Leemos que Abraham, "... salió corriendo de la entrada de la tienda para saludarlos; ..." Cuando pienso en el mensaje de los ejemplos de María, Marta y Abraham en las escrituras de hoy, los relaciono con tres historias en las noticias de la semana pasada en nuestro país. Estas histo-rias son sobre Jeffrey Epstein, Eric Garner y las redadas de ICE. Todos estos casos nos han hecho conscientes de la necesidad de pensar cómo se trata a las personas en nuestra sociedad. La influ-encia del dinero puede excusar el crimen de abusar de otros. El Sr. Epstein era un traficante sexual que no fue procesado por completo por sus delitos debido a su dinero e influencia. Eric Garner era sospechoso de vender cigarrillos individuales de paquetes sin pagar impuestos. Se resistió al arresto y un agente de policía le puso un estrangulamiento y otras acciones que causaron un ataque de as-ma. El médico forense dictaminó su muerte como un homicidio. La decisión del martes pasado fue que el Departamento de Justicia no acusará a la policía en relación con la muerte de Eric Garner. Finalmente, diez ciudades han sido blanco de redadas de ICE para deportar a inmigrantes que no están aquí legalmente sin tener en cuenta su situación familiar. Uno de los principios de la ense-ñanza social católica sobre la inmigración es: "Un país debe regular sus fronteras con justicia y mis-ericordia". Este principio es de la declaración pastoral de los obispos de EE. UU. Acogiendo con satisfacción al extraño entre nosotros: ... Al considerar las formas en que se trata a las personas en nuestro país, debemos mirar contin-uamente a Jesús y pedirle su guía para que exista la ley y el orden, pero también para que podamos dirigir nuestra casa con misericordia y con el amor de Cristo.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE América es un continente nacido del mestizaje que tomó a los europeos, los indígenas y los africanos para en-gendrar algo nuevo. Normalmente pensamos en el mestizaje de sangre que produjo nuevas razas latinoamericanas. Pero también existe el mestizaje cultural que produce nuevos elementos latinoamericanos. Uno de estos es el sarape, hijo de la tilma pre-colombina y el manto español. Este mestizaje en tela tiene sus principios en el siglo XVIII con una proliferación de talleres en Zacatecas, Saltillo y otros lugares. Esta cobija colorida, de algodón o lana, fue desarrollada para añadir col-or y belleza a los charros de siglos pasados.

A través de la historia el sarape ha sido usado por vaqueros, jinetes, soldados y revolucionarios. Hoy día el sara-pe, jorongo, frazada, gabán o cobija se ha convertido en símbolo de tradición mexicana y se encuentra decorando ho-gares, restaurantes e iglesias. México no es el único país que ha desarrollado un mestizaje en tela, también Guatemala, Colombia, El Salvador y otros más tienen sus telas y tapetes particulares que mezclan los colores y los diseños para cele-brar el talento y la creatividad del mestizaje latinoamericano.

A MINDSET OF SERVICE There’s a lot of traveling, delivering, and visiting going on in our readings today. In Genesis Abraham cares for the needs of three mysterious travelers. The psalm responds, celebrating the kind of righteousness that Abraham practices. Then, in his letter to the Colossians, Saint Paul describes his own ministry as almost like a delivery service: he, God’s steward, brings the word of God to their community. Finally, Luke’s Gospel shares the well-known story of Mary and Martha, and the different ways they welcome Jesus into their home. Amid all this coming and going, we are invited to pay attention to the ways we tend to the needs of others. Each of us can ask, How am I present to God and others in my life?
