WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT FATIMA
Fatima is the most prominent approved apparition of the 20th century.
It became famous the world over, particular for its three-part "secret."
To what does the secret refer?
In a letter to John Paul II date May 12, 1982, Sr. Lucia wrote:
"The third part of the secret refers to Our Lady’s words [in the second part of the secret]: ‘If not, [Russia] will
spread her errors throughout the world, causing wars and persecutions of the Church. The good will be
martyred; the Holy Father will have much to suffer; various nations will be annihilated’ (13-VII-1917)" (MF,
Introduction).
In general terms, then, the third part of the secret refers to the twentieth-century conflict between the Church
and Communist Russia.
What does the angel with the flaming sword symbolize?
The angel with the flaming sword represents the judgment that would fall on the world were it not for the
intercession of Mary (and, of course, the intercession of others, though here it is Mary with whom we are
concerned since she radiates the light that stops the flaming sword).
For many years it was rumored that the third part of the secret involved the possibility of a nuclear war. If
there is anything in the text that suggests this, it is the flames of the sword, which Sr. Lucia noted "looked as
though they would set the world on fire."
In Scripture, fire can be an image of judgment or conflict in general. In his commentary on the angel’s flaming
sword, however, Cardinal Ratzinger seems to allude to nuclear war: "Today the prospect that the world might
be reduced to ashes by a sea of fire no longer seems pure fantasy: Man himself, with his inventions, has forged
the flaming sword" (MF, "Theological Commentary").
In the 1984 consecration of the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the second of Pope John Paul II’s
specific petitions was: "From incalculable self-destruction, from every kind of war, deliver us".
Watch the bulletin for more information and plan on attending the next event, This Tuesday, December
13th from 7-8:00 pm. We will learn more about the meaning of Five 1st Saturday Masses as requested
by our Lady and then pray the rosary together. Refreshments will be served.
Please pray the rosary every day. Free Rosaries are available with instructions in many locations throughout
the church and near the tabernacle. On 1st Saturdays we will pray the Rosary at 8:15 am—other days at 8:25
am.
Each week we will have fresh flowers at Mary’s shrine. If you or your parish group would like to sponsor a
week please sign up at the Welcome Desk after weekend liturgies. Or sign up here:

You can provide the flowers or make a donation. Thank you to those who have already provided flowers.
Following daily mass on First Saturdays of each month we will have a Holy Hour of prayer and Scripture
readings and song. Fr. Phil

SCHOOL MINISTRY NEWS
This week our 3rd grade students
were stewards of the liturgy on
Wednesday morning. We all
gathered again for Mass on Thursday
to celebrate the Immaculate Conception. Our
students have been connecting to Mary throughout
this Advent season and learning from her model of
"Yes!" Students are busy in preparations for our
Advent program next Thursday evening. The halls
are filled with sounds of carols, bells, and recorders
as students capture the spirit of the season in song
and verse under the guidance of Mr. Bradler. We
hope you can join us next Thursday.
THIS IS MAGI WEEKEND!
Please RETURN the tags with the new,
unwrapped gifts to the Parish Center
before or after Mass on either Saturday,
December10th between 4:30pm-6:30pm or Sunday,
December11th between 8:00am-Noon.
No late gifts can be accommodated. Thank you!
