Chaplain Chats!Oh how time doth fly! Here it is the end of May

and June is upon us. When I think of June, I automaticallythink.....HURRICANE SEASON....yes June 1st is the first dayof Hurricane Season and I am sure that all of you who livein the coastal areas of Our Great State, and in SouthMississippi have already thought of it as well. Actuallysince Katrina (if you lived through it) most everyone thinksabout Hurricane Season.

But the real question is......What do you do about itbeyond the mere thought? Here is what I have observed :1 - For those who live on the coast and have seen firsthandthe death and destruction that a Hurricane can bring areusually the ones who have made themselves and theirfamilies "READY ". They have their "Disaster Kit andDisaster Plan" in place with needed supplies of food andwater, flashlights, batteries, personal items such asmedicines and first aid kits, hurricane evacuation mapsand shelter locations. You see these people KNOW thedanger and they are Ready for what may come.2- For those who live outside the direct strike area, but areclose enough to have experienced disabling destructionand somewhat life threatening experiences, may or maynot have a "Disaster Kit and Disaster Plan"in place. If theydon't have one yet they certainly mean to get one togetherbefore a storm forms in the Gulf. You see these peopleKNOW the danger and they know what they need but theyjust keep putting it off hoping in the back of their mindsthat it won't happen this year.3- For those who live outside the strike area and have onlyexperienced the affects from a destructive storm such asbrief power outages and gas shortages take little care toprepare, after all they think they can weather the storm all

by themselves with a few extra batteries and a full gas can.4- Lastly, there are those who think that there is no need toprepare or should I say foolish enough think there is noneed to be prepared. Their mind set is: "It won't happenthis year or it can't happen to me!"

I have seen these same attitudes too often overthe last 25 years as a (recently retired) EmergencyManager in South Mississippi. My experience has shownme that some will be prepared both mentally and physicallywhile others will be lost in the storm.

As a Christian and as your Chaplain I can't help butsee these attitudes paralleled in our Christian lives.1- Some of us have faced the fact that there is evil in thisold world and we have realized that without preparation wehave no control over the outcome of such. This person isin active preparation through prayer and Bible reading andis confidant in the outcome. While others know of thedangers and know they need to be prepared and actuallyintend to do something about it but keep putting it off. Andunfortunately there are those who just give no thought onthe subject because they don't believe that anything couldhappen to them.

My friends, we need to be prepared, ready to facethe storms of life and willing to share our faith withothers. Robert E. Lee stated: "Get correct views of life, andlearn to see the world in its true light. It will enable you tolive pleasantly, to do good, and, when summoned away, toleave without regret."

May I urge you to be prepared for the dangers ofthis life and be "READY" for the life to come! John 3:16

and June is upon us.

John 3:16
