Pastor’s Letter May 25/26

Memorial Day is one of my favorite holidays. Growing up it meant family barbecues, the first days of summer, and putting on my little league uniform and marching in the Memorial Day parade in Whitestone. My dad was a World War II veteran and he often took us to the military honors at Fort Totten, which along with Fort Schuyler on the Bronx side guards the entrance to Long Island Sound. There were always speeches by public officials, the patriotic music of John Phillip Sousa, and a salute with real cannons which left our ears ringing. I also remember that there was something heartbreaking about Memorial Day. It was also about loss. It was about people who gave their lives. It was about ordinary men and women who said yes to the call to serve and who never returned home to their friends and families. When my cousin Jerry died in Vietnam in 1969 I understood much more personally what this day was about. At his funeral Mass we remembered that Jesus told us to lay down our lives for our friends and that St. Paul taught us to bear our share of the suffering the gospel requires. On Memorial Day we always bought and wore “buddy poppies,” small red poppy flowers that were sold to help support families of those who died and to help care for the wounded. My dad explained that the idea behind the poppies came from a poem written by a Lieutenant John McCrae, a Canadian Physician who served in the First World War:

In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

There is really nothing glamorous about war. In the end it is all sadness. It should not be. But those who have served have done something awesome and good with their lives. They deserve to be honored. They deserve to be remembered. I hope you can join us on Monday Morning at 9 AM when we will gather in our church for our Memorial Day Mass. Those who served will be both honored and remembered.

Honored and Remembered

Members will just try each day to pray one decade of the Rosary — the second, Joyful Mystery — for the following intentions: the preservation of Religious Liberty for all citizens, the recognition of the sacredness of marriage and the dignity of human life, especially the life of the sick, the elderly, and those waiting to be born.

Annual Summer Party under the Tent—August 31 There is nothing like the first warm day of spring to turn our thoughts to the return of summer! This

year we will have something very special to look forward to: the return of the

Sacred Heart End of Summer Tent Party! I have heard so much about this

historic SHJM event and I am delighted that Pat Corrigan and Joan Heinz

have graciously offered to chair the party. This year our party will honor

Mary Steinbrecher, one of the party’s most enthusiastic supporters over

many years. Mary passed away this past fall but not before encouraging all of us to renew this event

as a way for the parish and community to come together and celebrate our wonderful parish and the

joys of summer in Southampton.

Raffle Tickets now on sale: Ticket sales begin this weekend for Sacred Hearts New and Improved Super Raffle. This year we will be selling even more tickets—up to 500 will be sold so we won’t run out and you won’t be disappointed! More prizes, 10 in all, so your chances of being a big winner will now be 1 in 50 instead of 1 in 200 as in the past.

Music at the Basilica Series Welcomes Our Diocesan Choir Our Diocesan Choir will present a concert, Sing Joyfully unto the Lord, on June 29 at 7PM. Mark the date.

Religious Retirement Fund Collection

The weekend of June 1/2 is the annual collection for the Religious Retirement Fund.

Religious sisters and brothers who have been involved in education, health care and social ministry

in the Diocese of Rockville Centre need our help. The stipends being earned by young members of

Religious Communities are no longer enough to support the needs of the elderly members of their

Communities. The number of elderly Religious in assisted living or nursing facilities continues to

rise and health care costs are rising too.

For this reason, the Diocese of Rockville Centre, for the past 28 years, has committed to return to our

Religious Communities a portion of our gifts of treasure, in appreciation for the many years of

service to the people of our Diocese of these dedicated servants of Our Lord.

Your gift may be place in the mail or dropped in the collection basket next weekend. Brochures

describing this appeal are available at the doors of the church .

On behalf of the Religious who serve in our parishes and hospitals, I thank you for your generosity.

By María
