Correct product-specific design of a decantercentrifuge involves a correspondingly wide range ofoptions according to the application - gastight or openprocess - as well as the properties of the product.

Principle of operation
Even the finest solids can be separated in the decantercentrifuge if its sedimentation rate in the carrier liquidis sufficiently high. The sedimentation rate dependson the particle size, the particle shape, the densitydifference between solid and liquid, and the viscosityof the latter. In many cases, significant improvementis possible by conditioning, for example heating oraddition of flocculants. Also important is thegeometrical design and establishment of operatingparameters.
Clarification of the liquid is effected in the case of solidbowl centrifuges primarily in the cylindrical section,dewatering of the solid matter taking place by meansof filtration or compression of the solid cake in theconical section of the drum.
Design
SIEBTECHNIK decanter centrifuges operate on thecontraflow principle. This means that the suspensionto be separated is fed approximately in the centre ofthe drum, the sedimented solid matter is conveyedtowards the smaller diameter by the screw rotating ata speed differential in relation to the drum, whilst theclarified liquid overflows at the opposite end of thedrum.
The height of the liquid level in the drum and thus theratio of clarifying to drying section of the drum can beinfinitely varied. This permits optimum matching tothe separation application involved.
The speed differential between screw and drum iseffected by means of a CYCLO gear unit. Drive iseffected in standard form by V-belt, the centrifuge beingfitted, according to speed combination, with a singledrive (fixed eccentric shaft) or dual drive (driveneccentric shaft).

SIEBTECHNIK DZ Decanters
The DZ Series can also be supplied as a vapourtightand gastight unit. The product housings are two-partthroughout and sealed with PTFE rings. The geometryof the rotating parts is specially matched to theseparation application involved.
For repairs and maintenance, we recommend anassembly bench as a valuable addition to the centrifugefor care and safe handling of the high-quality rotatingparts.
This SIEBTECHNIK heavy duty decanter is used inpreference for open process systems and isdistinguished by its outstanding separation propertieswith maximum availability.
As with all SIEBTECHNIK centrifuges, the ruggedCYCLO gear unit, as well as all the antifriction bearingsare connected to a circulating oil lubrication system.All the components are generously dimensioned andwill stand up to the most severe operating conditions.
This ensures maximum service life with minimummaintenance.
An overload protection system patented bySIEBTECHNIK which provides not only mechanicalpower disconnection, but also provides electricalsignals for shutoff of product feed and drive, completesthis Series and meets all safety requirements.
The housings are sealed as standard by a multi-chamber labyrinth system.

Series TS decanters are used in preference for gastightprocess systems. The continuous, undivided housing(tunnel construction), the tried and tested sealing ofthe shaft exits of the smallest diameters, as well asthe layout designed structurally for special operatingconditions, provide this centrifuge Series with anunusually high standard of safety.
As with all SIEBTECHNIK centrifuges, the gear unitand all the bearings are connected to the circulatingoil lubrication system, so that minimum maintenancecan be assured with maximum service life. Thegeometry of the rotating parts is specially matched tothe separation application involved.

Installation and removalof drum and screw, TS SeriesThe drum and screw of our TS Type decantercentrifuges are mounted in anti-friction bearings. Thebearing end shields are fixed to the torsionally rigidproduct housing. After releasing several screws, therotating parts can be moved horizontally out of thehousing with the aid of the rails provided and swivelledvertically.

SIEBTECHNIK Screen Decanters
The screen decanter is a combination of solid bowldecanter centrifuge and screen screw centrifuge withoutstanding dewatering behaviour for granularproducts.
The charge suspension is first of allprethickened in the decanter section,and to a large extent dewatered on theconical section of the solid bowl. Theliquid is clarified in the cylindrical sectionand spun off at the end.The prethickened solid matter istransferred by the conveyor screw into thecylindrical screen section and is there separatedfrom the residual liquid adhering to it.
This small decanter Series has been developedspecially for laboratory and technical institutes.Where relatively small quantities of suspensionswith high solids contents are involved, thisdecanter version is also outstandingly suitable forproduction.
The rotating parts connected to the drive unit onone side offer the advantages of ready accessibilityand ease of cleaning.
A special feature with sizes TS 140 F and TS210 F is their convertibility to screen screwcentrifuges H 200 and H 250. For this purpose,only the product housing with feed pipe androtating parts are changed. These sizes arespecially suitable for laboratory use and asuniversal screw centrifuges.
This Series of centrifuges is also available ingastight form and with all drive options.
All the decanter sizes listed in the SIEBTECHNIK rangeare available with screen section. The largerSIEBTECHNIK screen decanters are available withexternally replaceable screen inserts.
All the SIEBTECHNIK features and equipment optionsdescribed are also applicable to these centrifuge types.
Particularly efficient washing can be carried out in thescreen section by a special SIEBTECHNIK washingdevice. Mother liquor and washing liquid can, ifrequired, be taken off separately.
By virtue of the minimal residual liquid, the ultra-fineparticle loss is relatively low and can be minimized byrecirculation of the centrifuge effluent.

Circulating oil lubricationAll SIEBTECHNIK centrifuges are equipped asstandard with an integrated circulating oil lubricationsystem. The CYCLO gear unit, the main bearings andthe screw supplementary bearings are suppliedcontinuously with fresh oil by a pump unit. Thisfavourably affects temperatures, even at high speedsand prevents anti-friction bearing fouling. The returnoil is passed back to the oil reservoir integrated in thebase frame and filtered. Monitors are included in thesupply. This ideal lubrication system ensures longservice life of the gear unit and bearings with minimalmaintenance.
Weir adjustmentAt the cylindrical end of the drum, the clarified liquid isspun off across a weir. The height of the weirdetermines the pool depth and thus the residence timeof the suspension and thus the dry beach length ofthe solid matter.
All SIEBTECHNIK decanters are fitted with an infinitelyadjustable weir plate which ensures optimumadjustment and easy accessibility without involvingexpense for conversion.
ImpellerAlternatively, the clarified liquid can also be dischargedunder pressure by means of an impeller. Deliveryheads in excess of 20 metres are quite possible. Thisadditional device makes it possible to dispense with afeed pump downstream of the decanter.
Infinite sump adjustmentduring operationA special feature is optimization of the pool depth in thedecanter drum during operation for readjustment withconstantly changing products or product conditions.Here, SIEBTECHNIK offer a multi-channel peelingdevice which is used during two and three-phaseseparation in open as well as in gastight processsystems. Adjustment is effected during operation bymeans of adjusting spindle (patent applied for).
Solids discharge ringDischarge of solid matter is effected in the standardversion directly into solids housing. In the case ofproducts which tend to cake, the decanter shouldpreferably be fitted with a discharge device whichpasses the solid matter directly into the receiving screw.This discharge device consists of a ring positionedround the drum discharge section which is opentangentially in the bottom half about 45°. The solidsfall into the ring and are conveyed and discharged bythe scrapers attached to the drum. This directs thematerial into the solids chute.

Slurrying troughIn many production cycles, the solid matter must bere-slurried after centrifuging. A specially developedslurrying trough intercepts the solid matter at the drumdischarge and permits direct slurrying in the centrifugeitself.The solid matter is deposited in a surrounding “waterbed” and discharged extremely finely distributed withthe movement of the liquid. This device rendersdownstream special containers and agitatorssuperfluous (patent applied for).
Three-phase separationThe three-phase version of the decanter provides notonly the facility for separation of the solid matter froma liquid, but also simultaneous separation of two liquidphases with different specific gravities.
Accelerated by the high centrifugal forces, the heavyliquid is deposited on the drum wall, so that the lighterphase floats. Whilst the solid matter is discharged bythe screw, the two liquid phases flow to the outletopenings at the cylindrical end of the drum and arethere discharged in separated form.
Equipping the centrifuge with a peeling device whichis adjustable during operation permits fast, optimumfine adjustment of the separating line between the twoliquids.
If density differences or proportions of the individualphases are changed, it is always possible here toachieve maximum possible separation effect andoptimum purity of the liquid phases by means of thelevel height adjustment described.
Overload protection (SIEBTECHNIK patent)A special feature of all SIEBTECHNIK decantercentrifuges is the patent overrunning clutch forprotection against overload. This clutch ensurescompletely friction-free mechanical powerdisconnection with maximum efficiency and simple
resetting of the operating function without the need forassembly. At the same time, disengagement in thecase of overload results in an electrical signal to shutoff the product feed and the drive motor.
Solid matter washingExcellent washing results can be achieved with manyproducts by means of a special washing device inSIEBTECHNIK decanters. This special equipmentoption ensures optimum displacement effects of themother liquor with variable washing zone adjustment.

For special requirements, the decanter can be fittedwith a CIP cleaning system. This includes specialwashing tubes, special nozzles and PTO drive.

In the standard version, an electric motor drives the drum directly viaa pair of V-belt pulleys. The rugged cycloidal planetary gear unitprovides the differential speed between screw and drum and at thesame time acts as a torque converter. Either the natural gear unittransmission ratio determines the differential speed as a function ofthe principal speed by locking the gear unit drive shaft (single drive),or it is determined by a second belt drive arranged in parallel by driveof the gear unit input drive shaft from the same electric motor. Drumspeed and differential speed can be altered by changing V-belt pulleys.
A hydraulic starting clutch limits the starting current and at the sametime acts as overload protection for the motor. The patent SIEBTECHNIK overload clutch prevents damage tothe mechanical gear unit in the event of overload.
In the same way as the standard drive, an electric motor drives thedrum directly by V-belt. The mechanical cycloidal gear unit is replacedby a hydraulic motor.
A hydraulic pump unit supplies the oil for the hydraulic motor and isintegrated in the base frame of the machine. This drive option permitsnot only infinitely variable manual adjustment of the speed to suit theproduct conditions, but also continuous analog regulation of the screwspeed according to the load characteristics with different solid matterconcentrations. This means that the differential speed increasescontinuously or suddenly with rising screw torque and converselyreduces with falling torque.
This SIEBTECHNIK drive control with integrated SPC is a state-of-the-art alternative to hydraulic drives and by means of two separatedrives permits infinitely variable adjustment of drum speed anddifferential speed. A compact control cabinet houses two frequencyconverters which are cross-linked such that when the screw is leading,the energy flowing backward via the gear unit shaft is made availableagain to the main drive.In addition to variable manual matching of drum speed and differentialspeed, this drive option also offers the facility for automatic analogspeed adjustment to suit changing operating conditions. A serialinterface is provided for PC connection which also permits computer-controlled regulation by means of product coding.This control can be integrated in any fully automated system.Possible functions:
