The image of the Good Shepherd is one of the most beloved of all the images of God be- cause it communicates loving care and a personal relationship with the Lord, which is what we all seek. This tender image rests though, on the ability of the sheep to recognize and respond to the voice of the shepherd. As Jesus says, “The sheep hear his voice as the shepherd calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.” As sheep of the Lord’s flock, we need to be able to recognize his voice and follow Him. Jesus’ voice often gets drowned out by all the other distractions in our lives, but maybe with our new reality of COVID-19 we all have a few less distrac- tions and more time to learn to hear and listen to the Shepherd’s voice. As we begin to inch back into our normal reality, this Gospel is a good reminder to grow in this time of social distancing by using the more available time, quiet, and fewer distractions to learn once again to hear and respond to the voice of Jesus, our shepherd. continued Our Good Shepherd -Fr. Fourth Sunday of Easter www.ccasta.org

“Receive, live, and share Christ” - from the CCASTA Mission Statement

Today is often called Good

Shepherd Sunday because of the Gospel this weekend. The image of the Good Shepherd is one of the most beloved of all the images of God be-cause it communicates loving care and a personal relationship with the Lord, which is what we all seek. This tender image rests though, on the ability of the sheep to recognize and respond to the voice of the shepherd. As Jesus says, “The sheep hear his voice as the shepherd calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.” As sheep of the Lord’s flock, we need to be

able to recognize his voice and follow Him. Jesus’

voice often gets drowned out by all the other

distractions in our lives, but maybe with our new

reality of COVID-19 we all have a few less distrac-

tions and more time to learn to hear and listen to

the Shepherd’s voice. As we begin to inch back

into our normal reality, this Gospel is a good

reminder to grow in this time of social distancing

by using the more available time, quiet, and fewer

distractions to learn once again to hear and

respond to the voice of Jesus, our shepherd.

If you have any sick among you for whom you would like us to pray,

please contact Ascension at 410-242-2292 St. Augustine 410-796-1520 to

request a person to be added to the prayer list. Names will appear in the

next bulletin and be entered into our Book of Prayer in front of the Mary Altar

at each church. This week we pray for

all those suffering from COVID-19

Please also pray for all of our faithful departed, especially Margaret Bevins, Angela Christman, and

all those we have lost to COVID-19 May they rest in peace with the Risen Lord Jesus!

Prayers for Our Sick

CCASTA St. Vincent de Paul Ministry

We are available to help if you or someone you know needs help navigating

available social service benefits. We even have a small inventory of

groceries (but no paper products.) If members of our community need

a bit of help, call 410-242-2292.

Fulfilling the Mission

Thank you to all those who have already made their pledges. We still have a long way to go to reach our goal of $1.7 million,

so please consider making your sacrificial gifts to this campaign. The campaign lasts 36 months to enable you to make smaller installments, making

a larger gift less impactful on your family budget.

Our Prayer Intention for April:

For all those sick with COVID-19, for all

healthcare workers, and for an end to the

pandemic

Your prayers are crucial to becoming a mission-driven active

community!

Many Thanks from Fr. John & the Staff A very special word of thanks to all of you have remembered to send

in your weekly offerings during this pandemic. The staff and I greatly

appreciate your generosity and faithfulness in supporting CCASTA.

Though things have been tight financially, we have been able to keep

things running and pay the bills by your generous support.

Our Daily Bread put out an emergency call for food, and you responded in a big way! On Saturday, April 25th we collected 150 casseroles and lots

of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches! That’s about 750 meals! Our next collections will be Friday, May 22nd at Ascension,

and Saturday, May 30th at St. Augustine. Thank you so much for your generosity.

Mother’s Day Remembrance:

Honor your mother by making a memorial dona-

tion for her. She will be remembered at our Mother’s Day Mass May 10th 10:30 AM

Donations and names can be mailed to the St

Augustine Office or donated online

Breathe in the Easter Story — He is Risen! Rejoice in the

empty tomb and in God’s unfailing love for us.

The coronavirus is not only causing a viral epidemic-it has given rise to a pandemic of grief. We as a

global community are suffering so many losses. Thousands of people have already died of COVID-

19 worldwide. Many are dying right now. These are terrible losses for the loved ones of these pre-

cious individuals, and they will need our support and empathy in the months to come. Therefore,

this week and next week, I'd like to discuss Grief and Mourning in our lives.

What is Grief? As human beings, whenever our attachments are threatened, harmed, or severed,

we naturally grieve. Grief is everything we think and feel inside us when this happens. We experi-

ence shock, and disbelief. We worry, which is a form of fear. We become sad and possibly lonely.

We get angry. We feel guilty or regretful. The sum total of all these and any other thoughts and

feelings we are experiencing as a result of the coronavirus pandemic is grief.

How to help yourself and others: emotionally, socially, and spiritually

There are a couple of important things to understand about your pandemic grief.

- First, it is normal and natural. It is simply a part of your love and attachment.

- Second, grief responds to awareness, attention, and expression.

- You will feel better if you mourn. Mourning is being aware of your grief, giving it the attention it

needs and deserves, and expressing it outside of yourself.

- We have all heard about how to take care of ourselves physically with this virus, but not so much

about the emotional, social, and spiritual health. During this time of great grief, mourning is the

key to these pillars of self-care.

Emotionally - When feeling the emotional pain of our grief, we can tune into it and allow it to teach

us what we are really worried, sad, angry, etc. about Then, we can express it.

Socially - We have to rely on substitutes for face-to-face. Voice calls, texting, emails, and social me-

dia work. Then don't forget the power of the hand written letter!. The point is to stay connected.

Spiritually - When it comes to spiritual health, now is an especially resonant time to work on caring

for your soul. One redeeming factor of enforced isolation is that it creates the opportunity for spir-

itual contemplation and practice. We can turn our attention to our deepest beliefs and values. If

you're struggling with beliefs, values, meaning, and life goals during the pandemic, you're experi-

encing the spiritual aspects of grief.

(To be continued next week.)

What have you done during this Pandemic to nurture your Spirituality?

A Pandemic of Grief — excerpted from Alan Wolfelt,

Ph.D by Mary Jane Thomas, [email protected]
