Our digital technologies today are literally transforming our world. They're enabling us as humans, our species to be enormously successful. We're co-evolving with this technology. It's enabling us to make huge advancements in science, in communication, and in being connected. And at the same time, it's accelerating everything. It's changing how we think. It's reshaping our very existence.

Why do we do science? In order to fulfill our mandate to help solve the world’s biggest problems, fostering resilience along the way, we need to take a very broad view of science.

As an “enabling technology” GIS as “digital geography” provides a kind of framework and process similar to our brains. We sense, we understand, and we respond. We sense through measurements, geographic measurements. We see through visualization and mapping. We model the relationships and patterns, make projections, interpret things holistically, and then plan, design, make better decisions, and take action.

This is the foundation for delivering powerful capabilities across your organizations, and many of you are doing this through apps, the kind of building blocks for this responsive system, making it available, engaging people both ways. This can also be thought of as a GEOSPATIAL INFRASTRUCTURE of sorts.

And this geospatial infrastructure is powerful for scientists, conservationists, and citizen groups. It helps to access networks of distributed services and content, modeling, being able to publish and share. Real-time measurements are becoming integrated into the GIS fabric.

This infrastructure includes data (also known in information technology or GIS-speak as “content”).

Movie Forests_TreeCoverLossGain.mp4 Indeed, we live in a wondrous age where we now have access to a synoptic view of the ENTIRE entire planet and its various PERILS– as in this satellite view of tree cover loss (purple) and tree cover gain (green), with population density overprintedAs conservation managers we have truly massive volumes of data and capabilities – but how do we synthesize and turn data into actionable products, and compelling STORIES?

How can we take massive datasets like this and summarize them into something understandable, and, again, even more importantly ACTIONABLE, e.g., where species are under stress and need immediate protection?

The Living Atlas includes over 7000 ready-to-use datasets, maps that are really empowering many environmental data systems. Among the datasets are imagery, real-time imagery and basemaps, demographics and boundaries and a whole plethora of different topical information sets that are incredibly useful for Earth science research. This will be an incredibly powerful addition to the existing Half Earth Map.

The assets within the Living Atlas are NOT only from Esri but from the global GIS community representing the most authoritative, highest quality, and carefully curated of data. In addition, Esri has enhanced the Living Atlas with user interfaces and apps to make things easy for users to access and integrate into their GIS projects (whether from within Esri or elsewhere).

The ArcGIS Living Atlas of the World is in fact the world’s largest GIS digital library, providing access to a much more diverse and growing set of ready-to-use content that can enrich and TRANSFORM the classroom GIS user experience. This content is authoritative and hence useful and reliable on hundreds of topics, reflecting the collective work of the entire ArcGIS community in many areas. This “Community GIS of the World” includes not only the rich set of thousands of ready-to-use online data layers and maps, but a host of related capabilities (e.g., geocoding, routing, geoenrichment) that may be accessed for use in desktop, server, mobile, and web mapping applications.

They provide key insights to your data on a single screen.

They include many data visualization elements.

They are now a configurable user experience, requiring no programming.

An exemplar for DES where the Great Barrier Reef is concerned? This dashboard displays data related to the hurricane coral reef assessment and triage effort in Puerto Rico in 2018. NOAA, in coordination with partners Sea Ventures, Force Blue, and PR DNER, performed coral assessment and emergency triage under a mission assignment from FEMA. This engagement with FEMA is unprecedented, as it is the first time NOAA has received a mission assignment from FEMA for recovery support. Based on the assessments, recommended recovery actions have been suggested to the Territory for consideration in their recovery plan. These efforts resulted in approximately 10,000 corals reattached and saved.
