Praying the Franciscan Way How many visitors come to Assisi to just pray? Perhaps that is a statistic that I will never have an accurate estimate of any time soon. However, this place is a place of prayer for those seeking it. While it is true, Assisi like so many other “religious destinations” throughout the world has become somewhat commercial with souvenirs readily available, some of which I have purchased for myself. One of the best “gift shops” in As-sisi is found inside the Basilica of St. Francis itself and is well stocked with items to remember Assisi and may also inspire one’s Faith. But for myself, I have found that a few books in my favorite stores have been inspiring to me. The latest be-ing: “The Lessons of St. Francis – How to bring simplicity and spirituality into your daily life” by John Michael Talbot with Steve Rabey. I would not call it a scholarly work, but a practi-cal guide from a once country-rock star who left it all behind to follow Franciscan spirituality. He is the founder of a com-munity of Third Order Franciscans called: “The Brothers and Sisters of Charity.” John Michael Talbot is a talented musician. He experienced a radical conversion to Christianity and has now recorded 50 albums of religious and inspiring music. I listen to some of them on an “ipod” I have here in Assisi. It is fitting to have peaceful music in such a peaceful place. It is also fitting to be able to pray in such a place and in many different locations. I have two favorites: first being at the tomb of St. Francis and the second at the “Chiesa Nuova” translated as the “New Church” built over the remains of the boyhood home of St. Francis. Some original rooms are still available to visit. The church is located just next door across the street from the apartment I am renting. It is small and recently restored. The afternoon sun enters and illuminates the small sanctuary and it is a perfect place to pray. And to think, all I have to do is cross the street! But, how important is the distance we travel to pray? The distance isn’t measured in feet or blocks or even miles. The distance is one that is spiritual as St. Francis himself knew so well. According to John Michael Talbot, he stated that St. Francis didn’t spell out an elaborate plan for how and when to pray. Instead he wanted people to desire prayer so as to be-come our doorway to the loving heart of God and our lifeline to a moment-by-moment spiritual vitality that can energize and transform our lives. I think that happens each time we find our-selves in Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament; each time we are fully present at Mass; every time we take the time to give some time to our God who is always waiting for us to give Him our full attention. Prayer can happen anywhere and for now, for me it is happening in Assisi, the land of St. Francis and St. Clare. Although distance may separate us from each other, the spirit of a sincere prayer reaches the heavens and finds it’s way to the One who awaits to hear from us no matter where we are. It’s expression is found in words, music, community or in the silence of our hearts to name just a few. One of John Michael Talbots early recordings was titled: “Come to the quiet.” Today, it reminds me that the “quiet” might be hard to come by, unless we are willing to go look-ing for it. That journey takes some to Assisi. It takes others to their Blessed Sacrament Chapel. And for most, it gathers them together at a Eucharistic celebration in their parish church. And still for others, it is within the quiet of their own hearts that they connect with God and God with them. Prayer becomes our lifeline. It always has and it always will.

What are somebenefits of a

Holy Hour ofEucharisticAdoration?

Everyone who spends time in adoration of Jesus in the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist develops a personal relationship with Jesus and grows in love and holiness. Quiet time with the Lord in adoration enables people to listen and recognize His voice as He speaks to their hearts. Many of the faithful who attend adoration report various miracles and healings. Parish communities experience increased Mass attendance, service of others, unity, conver-sions, the return of fallen away Catholics, as well as vocations to the priesthood and religious life. The laity work together to coordinate Eucharistic Adoration, helping to build a faith-filled commu-nity.

vocation view—You have heard God’s command-ments. Keep them and pass them on. Nurturing the faith is part of the Christian vocation. (Matthew 5:17-37)

Sunday Readings and Backgrounds5th Sunday in Ordinary Time • Week of Feb. 9Reading I : Isaiah 58:7-10True holiness is found in right relationships with one another.Isaiah’s audience had recently returned from exile. They were frustrated that the restoration of Jerusalem was taking

so long.Isaiah is unsympathetic and tells them to share, regardless of

disappointments.Reading II : 1 Corinthians 2:1-5Paul’s second illustration of holiness: become transparent to let

God’s light shine through.Paul met rejection in Corinth.Paul says he can’t rely on human eloquence. He wants faith to have a strong foundation.Gospel : Matthew 5:13-16Salt is another image of holiness, and saltiness is given by God.Jesus’ disciples are to be like salt, constant and self-giving.Light symbolizes the goodness of the disciples, their sharing the

life of God, who is light. Those who see the light in the disciples will praise, not the

disciples, but God. Continued to last page

Today’s readings are part pep talk and part marching orders for us Christian stewards. They offer wonderfully clear guidance on what matters most to God in the way we prioritize our lives and the way He intends for us to use the gifts He has given us. The first reading, from the prophet Isaiah, gives us very straight-forward instructions: “Thus says the Lord: Share your bread with the hungry, shelter the oppressed and the homeless; clothe the na-ked when you see them, and do not turn your back on your own.” The Lord gives no wiggle room here — care for our brothers and sisters in need is a “must do” for the Christian steward. But note how generous our God is to us when we do these things. “Then your light shall break forth like the dawn and your wound shall quickly be healed.” The more we give ourselves away the more we will find ourselves, and “light shall rise” for us in the form of more of God’s grace in our lives and more joy and peace in our hearts. Our Gospel passage, from Matthew sends us out on our steward-

ship way with a bang as Jesus declares to us, His disciples, that we are the “salt of the earth” and the “light of the world.” But, He adds, salt no longer gives flavor if allowed to go stale — light cannot bring its blessed brightness if left hidden. Therefore, we must act! We must live our lives so that others will see the things that we do — the ways that we serve others, care for the vulnerable, prioritize our family relationships and above all, our love for God — and then give Him glory. This is the stewardship way of life. Let’s give it our all!
