vocation view—Jesus is compassionate espe-cially with those who mourn. Are you able to touch the lives of those who grieve? Could God be calling you to serve others through Church ministry? (Luke 7:11-17)

Today we reach the finale of the Easter season with the celebration of the great Feast of Pentecost. Reflecting on today’s readings inspires a sense of awe as we consider the mighty power of the Holy Spirit at work giving birth to and sustaining our Church. Just as awesome — the same Spirit is calling to us this day to take up our part in the Church’s saving work. In the first reading, from Acts, we see the creative ge-nius of the Holy Spirit moving through the newly con-firmed Apostles “who began to speak in different tongues as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.” The large crowd, gathered from all over the world were “amazed” and “as-tounded” that each one could understand the Apostles speaking in their own language. Each one of us, young and old alike, is personally called today by the Holy Spirit into the same mission as that of the first Apostles — to advance the Kingdom of God in our corner of the world. Just as He did on that Pentecost day, the Holy Spirit speaks to us in our “own language”

Sunday Readings and BackgroundsPentecost • Week of June 9, 2019Reading I : Acts 2:1-11All were filled with the Spirit!• For the people of Israel, Pentecost originally had

been a festival celebrating the wheat harvest and later it was associated with the covenant at Sinai and the exodus event.

• To remember this, Jews went to the temple in Jerusalem on the feast to offer sacrifices to God. That is why Jews from all parts of the world were gathered there in Jerusalem when the Spirit came upon the disciples.

• In today’s story of the first Christian Pentecost, the Holy Spirit descends on the disciples and the Church is born.

Reading II : 1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13We are one Body in Christ.• In his first letter to the community in Corinth, Paul

stressed that God’s gifts were given to serve and build the community.

• Paul compared the Christian community to the human body.

• A person becomes a member of this body in Baptism.Gospel : John 20:19-23Receive the Holy Spirit.• In the Gospel of John the word Peace appears five

times and three of them occur in the form of Jesus’ greeting, “Peace be with you”.

• After his greeting in today’s passage, Jesus breathed new life on the frightened disciples, and they received the gift of the Holy Spirit.

• The disciples were entrusted with the mission of forgiving sins.

Memorize and Spread Vital Resources to save a life. It is important to commit two simple resources to memory. The first is the pregnancy help hotline number, 800-712-HELP. The second is the website www.pregnancycenters.org. As pro-lifers, we must always be ready at a moment’s notice to help people who may be tempted to have an abortion, and to point them to real alternatives.

to give us the Good News of the Gospel and urge us to share it. We can think of our own language as the particular gifts, talents and passions we possess. We experience the presence of the Holy Spirit through them and we are meant put them to the work in grateful service of the Kingdom of God. When we consider the stewardship way of life we are called to live, we often focus on the challenges it poses. Surrendering ourselves to God is indeed a challenging way to live. But it leads to a life that is exciting, creative and deeply rewarding. Stew-ardship allows us to experience life as a great adventure because it is a life guided and directed by the very source of power and creativity— the Holy Spirit!
