by Brian Turner Subaru owners can be excused for their

lack of excitement about the bragging from other carmakers on their available All-Wheel and Four-Wheel drive systems, because, well, it’s nothing new to Subaru. Of course Subaru didn’t invent all-wheel or four-wheel drive but they did follow a path that has brought the best application to deliver power to all four wheels on passenger cars, cross-overs and small to mid-sized SUV’s. Subaru chose a symmetrical all-wheel drive system for their customers and the proof is in the increasing number of new Subarus hitting the road everyday and more importantly not hitting the ditch.

Just about most of the mainstream cookie-cutter approach to all-wheel drive is to simply add a rear-axle drive add-on to an existing front-wheel drive platform. The problem with most front-wheel drive vehicles is that the engine is offset to one side of the front-end, and as a consequence one front-wheel drive axle is considerably longer than the other. On hard accelerations these setups can cause the steering to tug to one side. This might be OK if you’re prepared and on a smooth dry road surface, but when things are winter-dicey it’s not so fun. Subarus’ engines and transmission are centered in their vehicles permitting an equal amount of force going to each wheel, bringing sure, solid, and safe

performance that help to keep their vehicles and more importantly their passengers on the road. They do it all with some of the best fuel economy on the planet and in model packages that almost every family transportation budget can afford.

Is the message getting through to Canadian consumers? Subaru finished 2012 with 31,003 units sold: an all time best in the Canadian market and they’re on track to best that again this year. But having safety, economy, and performance that brings new driver confidence won’t keep even the best company on top if they can’t deliver the styling that sets them apart from the competition and Subaru doesn’t disappoint on this target.

Last year they introduced the all new Impreza 4dr/5dr and the scorching hot BRZ, along with the updated Legacy and Outback. How they catch and hang onto the leading edge of buyer demand is no accident. It comes from understanding and listening to consumer feedback and delivering the products drivers and families want. Subaru is an attractive alternative to the mainstream brands and when people are doing their homework on a new vehicle Subaru keeps showing up on their radar.

While 2012 may be a very tough to follow, Subaru is up to the challenge with the introduction of the new XV Crosstrek (a top

seller) and the latest introduction the 2014 Forester and Forester XT Turbo just out in the last month which is already getting great reception by the public and media alike. Later this year the all-new and first hybrid XV Crosstrek will arrive on retailers’ lots. It will be the most fuel efficient AWD CUV on the market in North America.

While many auto awards do little to reveal that which merits a particular vehicle’s spot on a shopper’s short-list, Subaru is proudest of those honours that mean the most to their family of drivers and passengers.
