Volunteer Opportunities at Catholic Charities Pope Francis often speaks about service to others. In fact, Pope Francis specifically stated “The credibility of the Church and of the Christian message rests entirely on how Christians serve those marginalized by society.” Catholic Charities of the East Bay provides many volunteer oppor-tunities to serve others in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. To learn more about these opportunities, please contact Annie Banbury, Volunteer Program Coordinator at [email protected] or 510.768.3166.

National Catholic Schools Week Begins Jan. 27

Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.

This is the 2019 theme for National Catholic Schools Week. Our parish is truly blessed to have a parochial Pre-school through 8th grade. There are many challenges to this ministry, but the contribution our parish school has made to the church and society is inestimable. Pope Francis has been in Panama these past few days to celebrate World Youth Day. In his address to the youth at the opening ceremony he stated: “With you, we want to rediscover and reawaken the Church’s constant freshness and youth, opening ourselves to a new Pente-cost.” This is how we feel with every stu-dent who comes to SDW School. Thank you to all of our parishioners who help to support this ministry through your prayers, gifts of service and financial support, and by encouraging others to join us. May God reward you! Fr John E Direen, Pastor WYD Logo

PARISH EVENTS AND NEWS

Evening Schedule (Tue-Fri @ 5 pm) At 5:00 pm we begin Eucharistic Adoration and pray the Rosary & Divine Mercy Chaplet. Adoration continues in silence and Confessions are available 5:30-6:15 followed by Benediction and 6:30 Mass.

Monthly Movie Matinee (Sun Jan 27 @ 1215) This month we show “Joseph of Nazareth”. Only a little is written about Joseph, Jesus’ foster father, in the Bible. This film (2000, Ignatius Press) tries to define the Joseph figure by filling in some plausible details. Joseph is a wit-ness, master carpenter, good uncle for his nephews, hon-est believer, admirable friend, and most of all a loving member of the holy family.

SDW Saint Vincent De Paul Conference Please see our List of Needs on the green board in the ves-tibule, and please consider becoming a member of our SVdP parish conference. This is a very rewarding minis-try. For info please call Larry Lynch at (510) 501-0807.

St. David Book Club - Wednesday 1/30/2019 at 7 PM (right after the evening Mass), in the JPII Room (across the street from the church). We have begun our study of Revelation, with the help of commentary by Catherine A Cory, professor of theology at the Univ. of St. Thomas, in St. Paul, MN. We read a scripture passage aloud and then comment. Revelation, full of colorful and challenging im-ages, really needs to be discussed. Please join us.
