MUSIC NOTES

Conveniently for those composers who wished to pay tribute to him, J.S. Bach’s last name can easily

be rendered musically. In German musical nomenclature, the letter B refers to what we would call B-

flat, and H refers to B-natural. That means the name BACH can be played with the notes B-flat, A,

C, and B-natural, which also happens to be an interesting musical motive. Robert Schumann, who, as

a well-known composer and renowned music journalist, was one of the most influential figures of the

Romantic period, wrote 6 fugues based on the theme. Schumann purchased a pedal piano (exactly

what it sounds like – a piano with an organ-style pedalboard) for his home in order to practice the

organ and counterpoint. His explorations of this instrument yielded three sets of pieces, but these six

fugues are the only set in which the pedal piano is not specified, so it’s conceivable that he wrote

them with the organ in mind. This short, tranquil fugue, the third of the set, is given the expression

marking, “mit sanften Stimmen,” which is German for “with soft voices.”

Today’s choral music was all written by a single Franco-Flemish composer who was known by many

names. Depending on the country he was working in at the time, he may have been known as Roland

de Lassus, Orlande de Lassus, Orlando di Lasso, or Roland de Lattre. He was born in modern-day

Belgium, and moved to the low countries at the age of 12. He spent his life largely moving between

Italy and the low countries, until he joined the court of Albrecht V, the Duke of Bavaria (in Munich),

where he remained for the rest of his life. He did, however, travel to Italy frequently, where he kept

up with the latest musical trends (even though his style was fairly conservative) His influence was on

par with that of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina and Tomás Luis de Victoria. He was not alone in his

flexible name; Victoria, for example, was often known by an Italianized version of his Spanish name,

Tommaso Ludovico da Vittoria.

Bach’s Prelude in G Major, BWV 568, is a stand-alone work (without an accompanying fugue), and is

probably a fairly youthful work by the composer. It’s very much in the North German style,

beginning with a flourish in the manuals and giving way to a short pedal solo. From there, it moves

through many small sections in a manner typical of the North German “Stilus Phantasticus.”

Collect of the Day

Celebrant The Lord be with you.

People And also with you.

Celebrant Let us pray.

O God, you have prepared for those who love you such good things as surpass our understanding: Pour into our hearts such love towards you, that we, loving you in all things and above all things, may obtain your promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you an d the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

First Reading— Acts 14:8-18 In Lystra there was a man sitting who could not use his feet and had never walked, for he had been crippled from birth. He listened to Paul as he was speaking. And Paul, looking at him intently and seeing that he had faith to be healed, said in a loud voice, “Stand upright on your feet.” And the man sprang up and began to walk. When the crowds saw what Paul had done, they shouted in the Lycaonian language, “The gods have come down to us in human form!” Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul they called Hermes, because he was the chief speaker. The priest of Zeus, whose temple was just outside the city, brought oxen and garlands to the gates; he and the crowds wanted to offer sacrifice. When the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of it, they tore their clothes and rushed out into the crowd, shouting, “Friends, why are you doing this? We are mortals just like you, and we bring you good news, that you should turn from these worthless things to the living God, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and all that is in them. In past generations he allowed all the nations to follow their own ways; yet he has not left himself without a witness in doing good-- giving you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, and filling you with food and your hearts with joy.” Even with these words, they scarcely restrained the crowds from offering sacrifice to them.

May God be merciful to us and bless us, show us the light of his countenance and come to us. Let your ways be known upon earth, your saving health among all nations. All repeat the Refrain.

Let the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you judge the peoples with equity and guide all the nations upon earth. All repeat the Refrain.

The earth has brought forth her increase; may God, our own God, give us his blessing. May God give us his blessing, and may all the ends of the earth stand in awe of him. All repeat the Refrain.

Second Reading— Revelation 21:22-22:5 I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God is its light, and its lamp is the Lamb. The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it. Its gates will never be shut by day -- and there will be no night there. People will bring into it the glory and the honor of the nations. But nothing unclean will enter it, nor anyone who practices abomination or falsehood, but only those who are written in the Lamb's book of life. Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city. On either side of the river is the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, producing its fruit each month; and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. Nothing accursed will be found there any more. But the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him; they will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. And there will be no more night; they need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.

Holy Gospel— John 14: 23-29

Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.

Vzzzzzzzzzzzzzz6zvvvcczdrvczzzYzzzzzzzzz/ People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus said to Judas (not Iscariot), “Those who love me will keep my word, and my Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words; and the word that you hear is not mine, but is from the Father who sent me. I have said these things to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be af raid. You heard me say to you, ‘I am going away, and I am coming to you.’ If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father, because the Father is greater than I. And now I have told you this before it occurs, so that when it does occur, you may believe.” Deacon The Gospel of the Lord.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, through Jesus Christ our Lord; but chiefly are we bound to praise you for the glorious resurrect ion of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; for he is the true Paschal Lamb, who was sacrificed for us, and has taken away the sin of the world. By his death he has destroyed death, and by his rising to life again he has won for us everlasting life. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

The people remain standing. The Celebrant continues Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, ‘Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.’ After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, ‘Drink this, all of

you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.’ Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.
