Murwillumbah Festival of Performing ArtsChoir and String EnsemblesOn Monday 22 June the Sunshine Ave Choir and String Ensembles travelled to Murwillumbah to participate in the Festival of Performing Arts. The choir sang two songs, ‘The Long White Sails’ and ‘There’s Room for Many a More’, superbly and placed first in their section. I’d like to congratulate all the students for their commitment and dedication throughout the semester and Mrs Walters for her continued direction.

Under the tutelage of Miss Mathison both String Ensembles performed admirably with Year 4 placing second and Year 3 placing third in the Primary Orchestral Strings section. All students conducted themselves impeccably and were great ambassadors for Lindisfarne.

Individual instrumental students also performed in the Festival and some of the results are as follows:

Strings Solo 10 years and under:Madeleine Warner Highly Commended ella Sinclair Highly Commended

Strings duet 10 years and under:Madeleine Warner/ella Sinclair Highly Commended

String solo 8 years and under:Darcy laycock Highly Commended

Piano Solo 10 years and under:Madeleine Warner Second

All performers are to be congratulated for their outstanding performances throughout the Festival whether they placed or not. It takes enormous courage for children to perform on a stage in a competition setting and they are all deserving of our acknowledgement, praise and admiration.

Tina Ross, Music Teacher

Speech and DramaDuring the last two weeks over fifty primary students participated in the Murwillumbah Eisteddfod, many for the first time. They competed as individuals, pairs and in groups in poetry, prose, mime and drama sections. All students performed exceptionally well and should be very proud of their efforts.

Better Buddies Awesome AfternoonOur Kindergarten students and their Year 4 buddies had a fantastic afternoon on Thursday celebrating our buddies program for Term 2. It was wonderful to see the children working together to create chatterboxes, pipe cleaner sculptures and making human knots. The afternoon once again reiterated the importance of creating these special relationships.

Brainstorm ProductionsAll children from Kindergarten to Year 6 enjoyed our visiting performance from Brainstorm Productions on Friday. The performance titled ‘The Magic Words’ focused on manners, respect and honesty, three things that are very much part of the Lindisfarne culture. Children have been completing follow up activities in their classrooms focused on the messages from the performance.

Safe Happy HolidayI would like to thank all the parents, grandparents and members of the School community who continue to generously volunteer their time to support the children. I wish you all a safe and relaxing vacation.

Sunshine Avenue Paper Aeroplane CompetitionThirty eight Year 3 and 4 students were involved in a paper aeroplane competition where they investigated the science of aerodynamics aspect. The competition was held over five weeks and competitor’s final results were calculated from their three best throws. Students were challenged each week to alter their design or make a new plane that would travel further than the week before. Both boys and girls signed up to enter the competition and many other students helped by taking photographs, measuring distances and recording results. Mrs Manning was there as a facilitator - it was the students who worked together to run the competition.

The final results were outstanding, the longest distance recorded was 26.90 metres by our winner.

The overall winners were:

First Oliver Neumann 3T 75.16 metres

Second Louis Van Vorst 3M 61 13 metres

Third Jacob Rose 3M 53.68 metres

Fourth Sven Loemker – 4D 53.09 metres

Reciprocal Reading in 5TMLast Tuesday 16 June, 5TM invited parents to pop in for Literacy Hour. They participated in reading groups and learnt all about Reciprocal Reading. This well-researched method is used to develop learners’ reading skills. Its aims are to:

• improve reading comprehension through the use of four reading strategies: predicting, questioning, clarifying and summarising and scaffold the four strategies by modelling, guiding and applying the strategies while reading.

• enable pupils to reflect on their reading and develop higher order thinking skills and use the social nature of learning to improve reading comprehension.

Reciprocal Reading encourages children to ask questions of the text themselves and to answer and build on the questions of their peers - a powerful learning experience which requires a higher level of understanding and engagement with the text.

Speaking and listening skills are also central to this method. Speaking and listening development is crucial for creative and critical thinking. This approach gives children the opportunity to practise speaking and listening skills among their peers.

Here are some of 5TM’s thoughts about Reciprocal Reading:

“It’s more fun than just reading as a group because having different roles is like having a job.” Cate Roberts

“Reciprocal Reading builds our literacy skills by teaching reading and cooperating together to understand the text.” William Jordan

“I like the different roles – doing certain things at certain times - as we read.” Daniel Green

“You have fun while reading with your peers and learn interesting things about the world.” Max McDonnell

Following our reading, students created individual Pic Collages. Pic Collage is an app that can be used as a tool to demonstrate learning across the curriculum. Children use Pic Collage to create collages of their learning, curriculum related posters, tell stories and record their ideas, using their own photos and information or by sourcing from the internet.

These Pic Collages summarise the student’s knowledge and understanding gained from our reciprocal reading activity.

5TM is looking forward to sharing more of their learning with their parents next term.

Early Learning CentreBig Bang ScienceOn Tuesday morning we were treated to a Science show. Brett from Big Bang Science performed some experiments and demonstrations involving liquid nitrogen, forces, air pressure, combustion and of course explosions that really opened our eyes. Highlights were Mr Pettit sitting on a seat of nails and Miss Rogers being covered in flour while helping create a big ball of fire. Lindisfarne students were truly an excellent and appreciative audience.

Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School would like to invite you to a seminar presented by Michele Juratowitch, Director of Clearing Skies, an organisation dedicated to providing support services to high-ability children, their families and their schools. The focus of this seminar is to empower parents and give them tools to help understand their “bright spark”.

Date: Monday 20 July 2015

Time: 5.30 – 7.00pm

Location: Mahers Lane campus Lecture Theatre

RSVP: Wednesday 15 July Christine Keevers [email protected]

Parenting “bright sparks” can be extremely challenging. As parents, we need to know how we can:

• Identify our child’s strengths and nurture talents• Understand our child’s abilities and meet their needs• Promote achievement while ensuring children are healthy, happy and confident• Support children to manage stressors and become resilient when they encounter difficulties• Guide children through the delicate balance of fitting in and standing out• Help our “bright sparks” to become independent; to develop the characteristics and work habits that

enable them to achieve

Abilities, temperament, thinking, behaviour, provisions, opportunities and friendship patterns interact to influence children’s choices, motivation and achievement. Parents with an understanding of the dynamic of talent development and their child’s social and emotional needs are best able to support, guide and nurture their “bright sparks”.

Raising Bright Sparks
