The Story of a New BeginningLong ago, the world was nothing but water. There were only birds and animals. One day, a woman fell from the sky and landed on a giant turtle. The woman had to stay on the turtle because she had nowhere else to go. She asked the animals if they could dive down to the depths of the water and get a piece of the earth for her. The woman said she would take the piece of earth and create land on which everyone could live. The loon made the first attempt and was under the water for a long time. When the loon returned to the surface, he had nothing. Next, the beaver tried, but he also returned with nothing. Then the muskrat wanted to try. All the animals laughed at him because of his small size. They thought that he too would fail. But the woman said he could try. The muskrat dove straight down into the water. He stayed under the water for a long time, longer than the rest of the animals. As he dove deeper, the water became dark. He did not know which way was up. Above the water, the other animals waited. Finally, the muskrat slowly surfaced, barely alive. In his little paw he held some earth. The woman took the earth from his paw and placed it on the turtle’s back. This is how the land was created.

Our LogoThe Oshki-Pimache-O-Win Logo symbolizes the beginning of a new life for those who pursue an education to improve their lives. Our logo was designed by Alvin R. S. Fiddler of Sioux Lookout, Ontario and is based on a story he heard as a child. The tree represents the beauty and life that the land has given. The turtle represents the potential of an individual to take something simple like a little clump of dirt and turn it into something wonderful.

Message from the Executive DirectorAbout ten years ago an elderly aunt in her seventies told me she remembered as a child she heard the ‘Indian Agents’ telling her parents and other parents in our community of Bearskin Lake that their children need an education in order to help run the affairs of their community in the years to come. At the time she did not understand why she had to learn to read and write English (...and all the other subjects) because there was no school, band office or any programs or services in the community. Today, there is a band office with many offices, daycare centre, nursing station and a resource office that houses programs and services like Alcohol and Drug Abuse and Tikinagan Child and Family Services and a school with about eight classrooms and a gymnasium. There is an Education Authority and Wahsa Education. This is a typical community of Nishnawbe Aski Nation.

My aunt went on to say organizations have also been set up to work for our communities. These would include Tribal Councils and Nishnawbe Aski Nation and the institutions it created like Oshki-Pimache-O-Win, Nishnawbe Aski Legal Services Corporation, Nishnawbe Aski Development Fund. There are service organizations like Tikinagan Child and Family Services and Payukotayno Family Services. My aunt concluded by saying that she now understands what the Indian Agents meant. All our communities and organizations require people who can read and write the English language (...and the skills and knowledge that come with an education).

The growth in the communities of Nishnawbe Aski Nation and in other treaty areas need people with skills and knowledge to work in their organizations. Maybe you want to work in your community or in one of the organizations but don’t have the skills and knowledge. Maybe you’re already working but want to enhance your skills and knowledge. Here at Oshki-Pimache-O-Win, we are offering a range of culturally appropriate programs in the coming academic year of 2013-2014 that will help you get new or enhanced skills and knowledge for your career or jobs.

Take a close look at our programs and the course listings. If you see a program that interests you submit your application for admission now. Call if you have any questions. When you get accepted you can start on getting your student sponsorship in place and preparing for your learning journey. We look forward to seeing you at OSHKI!

Sincerely, Rosie S. Mosquito, Executive Director

Mission Statement

About Us…Oshki-Pimache-O-Win is an independent, post secondary institute with a Governing Council representing the Nishnawbe-Aski Nation territory. We offer students a friendly, caring and nurturing environment for life long learning. Our special delivery methods combine on-campus sessions, independent study and distance education to allow our students to remain in their home communities while completing a program. The majority of our programs are delivered in partnership with accredited Ontario colleges. The benefits of such partnerships are many:

• Ourstudentsgraduatewithaccreditedcertificatesordiplomasthatarerecognized by First Nations and mainstream employers.

• Studentscanapplyforadvancedstandinginothercollegeoruniversityprograms.

• Fundingagenciesarewillingtosponsorstudentsenrolledinfullyaccreditedpostsecondaryprograms.

Oshki-Pimache-O-Win staff have an understanding of First Nation cultures and of the needs and issues faced by First Nations people while pursuing their education. Oshki-Pimache-O-Win has the support tools in place to assist students in their academic journeys.

Our instructors come from diverse backgrounds and have a passion for teaching First Nations students. They recognize the unique learning needs of our students and design their respective curriculum to help students succeed. Oshki-Pimache-O-Win is an institute with much to offer.

Mandate

1. To develop, design and deliver post secondary educational programs and services to meet the educational and cultural needs of the members and communities of Nishnawbe Aski Nation and other learners.

2. To enhance, organize and coordinate the delivery of post secondary education and training programs and services, which promote and support Nishnawbe Aski Nation culture, traditions, teachings, beliefs, language, values and life-styles.

3. To establish protocols and partnerships with existing post secondary educational institutions and Nishnawbe-Aski Nation communities at the local level, as well as in the regional, national and international arenas.

OSHKI’s AFEP program is perfect for me! The responsibilities I have as a full-time working mother kept me from being in school. Taking courses one at a time through independent learning was taking forever. My goal is to get a professional

designation in accounting and I have my eye on either a CGA or a CMA. My motto is: believe in yourself, work very hard and keep your eye on the goal! If you

are employed, a full-time parent or both then this program will work for you.Christine Thomas - Aboriginal Financial and Economic Planning

Your Learning Experience at OSHKI

Learning at a DistanceOshki-Pimache-O-Win provides distance and online education programs and courses to students wishing to study while remaining in their home communities. Our program delivery approach combines on-campus face-to-face instruction with off-campus, technologically mediated instruction. Our students learn as part of a group and attend both on-campus and virtual classrooms to receive course materials, support and instruction from instructors and staff. Courses may use one or more delivery methods to instruct students. Our preferred method of instruction uses a combination of group study using live web-based conferencing and individualized study using e-learning. Every OSHKI student receives training and ongoing support in the use of our distance and online education delivery systems.

CentraCentra is a live interactive virtual classroom environment provided by Contact North. OSHKI students access Centra using a computer with Internet access and a headset to attend scheduled classroom sessions. A Centra session allows instructors and students to meet as a group, attend lectures, participate in discussions, view presentation slides, and visit other web sites on the Internet. Adequate and reliable access to the Internet is necessary for this method of delivery.

Online Learning (Moodle)Moodle is an education platform that allows students to log in and access online course information and materials. Moodle is a flexible way for students to access their independent studies online. Course outlines, assignments, tests and activities can be found on Moodle.

Audio ConferencingAlthough Centra is the preferred method of classroom instruction, we realize that not every student will have adequate and reliable access to the Internet. Classes can also be scheduled via audio conferencing, connecting students to the class through telephone.

Contact North or Wahsa sites are accessible to students through OSHKI for Centra and Audio Conferencing.

My experience at OSHKI has provided me great support and knowledge through my journey of learning.

On-campus ExperienceThe on-campus sessions are important components that are integral to our students’ success. While on-campus, students have the opportunity to access video/library resources from partnering colleges, work directly with instructors, work on group assignments, build strong relationships with fellow students and participate in-group activities. The campus is located in Centennial Square in Thunder Bay, with convenient access to city transit and parking.

Program Delivery Model

OSHKI’s program delivery approach blends on-campus sessions with off-campus e-learning. This allows students to study and remain in their home communities for most of each semester. OSHKI students receive course materials, support and instruction from both instructors and staff. The post secondary programs delivered at OSHKI follow the college semesters of fifteen weeks each.

Prior to the first on-campus session all new students must attend an on campus three day Mandatory Student Orientation. (Example schedule below)
