Quick Overview
This presentation covers construction site safety basics only. Depending on your specific site or role, you may have additional standards to follow.
Part 1
Safety Starts with You
Know and practice safe behavior on and off the job.
● Take Care of Yourself● Wear Appropriate PPE● Practice Safe Behavior● Don’t Believe “Just this Once”
1. Take Care of Yourself
If you’re exhausted, stressed, or nutrient-deficient, you might not notice that hazard.
Eating nutritious meals, getting a good night’s rest, stretching, and stress relief are essentials for success and safety.

2. Wear Appropriate PPE
Eye & Face
Wear protective eyewear when exposed to flying dust, clippings, shavings, and debris.
Hands & Feet
Wear gloves and steel toe boots to avoid bruising, crushing, and lacerations from heavy or sharp objects.
2. Wear Appropriate PPE, continued
Noise
If you have difficulty hearing or understanding a "normal" tone of voice at a distance of about three feet, you should be using hearing protection.
Ear plugs and muffs must be airtight to protect your hearing.
Reflective Vest and Hard Hat
Wear your reflective vest , hard hat, and long pants during every shift.
2. Wear Appropriate PPE, continued
Fall Protection
Wear a personal fall arrest system when working on a suspended scaffold more than ten feet above working surface, or on an aerial lift or bucket truck.
Don’t work on a scaffold more than 6ft. above working surface that is missing guardrails.
3. Practice Safe Behavior
1. If you don’t know, ask. If you’re unsure whether or not conditions are safe or if you feel unprepared to do a task, ask your supervisor or someone qualified to answer your concern.
Certain equipment and tools should only be operated by trained personnel. If you’ve never been trained to operate something, decline and do not perform the task until you’ve received proper training.
3. Practice Safe Behavior, continued
2. Don’t horse around. Everyone needs to let off steam and joke around, but the jobsite isn’t the place. The resulting injuries to you or someone else are never worth the 15-seconds of fun.
3. Fix hazards and report near misses. If you see something, say something. You don’t want an injury to result from your silence.
4. Don’t Do Something Unsafe “Just This Once”
Don’t rush, get ‘er done, or do things your way.
Just one unsafe act can harm you and others.

Part 2
Know Your SurroundingsRecognize hazards and unsafe
situations.
● Be Alert● Know the Risks● Fire Safety● Equipment Safety● Don’t Go There
1. Be Alert
Construction is a hazardous job.
Be aware of your surroundings. Take note of anything potentially hazardous and do your best to eliminate or mitigate a hazard before engaging in your work. This can be as simple as turning a light on before you walk into a dark room or as complex as thinking through a likely chain reaction of events.
2. Know the Risks
The top 10 risks you’ll face on a construction site are:
1. Falling from heights 2. Slips, trips, and falls3. Trench collapse4. Scaffold collapse5. Electric shock and arc flash/arc blast6. Failure to use proper personal protective equipment7. Repetitive motion injuries8. Lifting injuries9. Improper signage and labeling of hazards
10. Messy, disorganized work areas (can hide any number of hazards)
3. Fire Safety
We have fire extinguishers and a fire evacuation plan located at:
Be aware of situations with fire risk.
Never use and always report damaged electrical cords and equipment.
Handle and store flammable and combustible materials properly.
4. Equipment Safety
We have designated operators for heavy equipment, vehicles, and certain power tools.
Stand clear of operating equipment and always wear your PPR to avoid equipment-related injury.
Never improperly ride in or on powered industrial vehicles.
