Two decades ago, the greatest health crisis that children faced, according to the President of American Pediatrics, was HIV, malaria and various other diseases.

Today, the greatest health crisis that children face is invisible—Toxic Stress.

The critical 36

The first 36 months are critical for a child’s development, knowing the lifelong effects that toxic stress can have on an orphans life.

Dr. Jack Shonkoff, Director of the Center on the Developing Child at harvard University explains:

“Toxic stress can seriously weaken the foundation of developing brain architecture in the first two to three years of life, so early intervention is profoundly important.”

extreme neglect

Countless children spend the critical years of their development neglected in an orphanage with overcrowded conditions, substandard shelter, poor nutrition and little to no medical care.

Research shows that extreme neglect and prolonged activation of the stress response systems diminishes brain development and other organ systems, and increases the risk for stress-related disease and cognitive impairment, well into the adult years.

What Is Toxic Stress?

Toxic stress occurs when a child experiences strong, frequent, and/or prolonged adversity. We see toxic stress in orphans who live in institutions, lack proper nutrition and experience severe trauma on a daily basis.

Without adequate adult support this kind of prolonged activation of the stress response systems can disrupt the development of brain and other systems.

Toxic stress experienced during their early years causes life-long physical, emotional and developmental effects for these children.

All God’s Children International serves children in need for these compelling reasons.

• Every child deserves to be loved. The abandoned, abused, and institutionalized cry out for someone to love them, so they can reach the full potential God intends for their lives.

• The need is urgent. Without receiving loving care in the first 36 months of a child’s life, the negative effects will last their entire lifetime.

• It is God’s command to “look after widows and orphans in their distress.” His love and concern for the fatherless is a timeless theme woven through scripture.

Janie came into the world fighting! A preemie at only 30 weeks gestation, she had several health issues. With our loving care she was nursed to health.

A Fragile Life

Hannah’s Hope received a call from a government orphanage to take two babies who needed immediate medical attention. When our nurses arrived, they reported that one of the babies would likely not make it—his temperature was very low and he was not opening his eyes.

Our country director implored, “Please just bring him. If we must be the ones to see his last breath and bury him, we will do that. But I am trusting that if he is alive now, then we will do everything to help him be well.”

Thankfully, through unrelenting care and strong faith, Senea is alive today, and thriving. After three months of loving care at Hannah’s Hope, the sickly, dying infant that arrived that first day, was transformed into a chubby, smiling, healthy baby.

Alexa was born prematurely at only 32 weeks. She battled pneumonia and other health challenges to survive with the loving care of Hannah’s Hope.

You can bring life-changing hope to orphaned children.

During the first four weeks of life, no doctor or nurse believed Silas would make it. He was found abandoned at birth in a remote village.

Silas spent the next month in the hospital requiring constant care inside a dark, quiet room. His special mother from Hannah’s Hope never left his side.

With the love and care of the staff at Hannah’s Hope, this fragile newborn baby became a smiling, active 21-pound infant boy.first day at hannah’s hope
