A Message From the President

Bob Sacco

Th e 2014 Sweepstakes was again a great success and the Association owes a great deal of thanks to all of the membership who took the time to send in their tickets. Member-ship Director and Morehead State University Rifl e Coach Alan Joseph did a great job and each of the four Junior shooting programs will re-ceive just over $3,100 each aft er ex-penses. Th e generosity of the folks who purchased Sweepstakes tickets will enable the Association’s Junior programs to continue to excel. Th e Juniors are the future of our sport and deserve all the support we can off er.

My personal thanks go out to those who were instrumental in supply-ing our sweepstakes prizes this year. Master knife maker and member Gary Smith has already commit-ted to the 2015 prize pool with the promise of another beautiful custom knife. Bob Landies and the folks at Ohio Ordnance Works provided both a rifl e and a case of ammo; they are great friends of the Association. Th e CMP is always supportive of the ORPA and provided an M1 at cost. Jack R. Basham Gunsmithing in Blue Ash, Ohio and Kames Sport Center in North Canton, Ohio pro-vided transfer services for the fi re-arms prizes.

Th e Alliance Rifl e Club has again donated another Modern Sport-ing Rifl e for the 2015 Sweepstakes, a Smith & Wesson M&P 15 Sport. Th e other prizes for 2015 will be

announced soon, watch these pages for more information and support our Junior Programs by returning the sweepstakes tickets when they arrive.

Th anks to all the members in ad-vance for what I’m sure will again be a generous response.

BY COL. FLETCH O’DUBOIS III(ORPA Cowboy Director Bill Knall)

Cowboy Corner

By now I think everyone has heard of the Single Action Shooting So-ciety (SASS), noted as “the fast-est growing shooting sport in the world”. Since SASS got started in California back in 1982 and now there are more than 100,000 regis-tered and 50,000 active members. And, there are more than 600 affil-iated clubs throughout the country.

SASS cowboy action competitions are similar to the scenes of the Western books and movies where you held off marauders, rescued the damsel from distress, or got to play the bad guy. The sport requires the use of a pair of six-guns, a lever-ac-tion rifle in a pistol caliber, and an old time shotgun either Winchester

SASS Cowboy Action - the Fastest Growing Shooting Sportmodel 1897 pump or side-by-side double barrel. Scores are based on how long it takes to finish the sce-nario with five seconds added for each missed shot. The targets are big and close! These competitions are meant to be fun scenarios emphasizing bygone events going back into the 1880s where Old West characters and cos-tumes were the rule and you can strap on your six-guns and lever your rifle to ward off the bad guys. I told the readers last spring that I was going to shoot in the B'West-ern category this year. In this cate-gory there are strict costuming re-quirements to simulate those great B'Western movies featuring the likes

of Roy Rogers, Dale Evans and the silver screen hero Hop Along Cas-sidy. It was a hoot........... Since there are over 30 different shooting cat-egories shooters compete against their peers. Yes, we do keep score, but we want our competitors from 10-year-old Buckaroos to 90-year-old Elder Statesmen to have fun too.

It would be great if we could feature your clubs activities in Gunsmoke so I encourage you to send them in to Rachel, your fantastic ORPA ed-itor. We need your photos, match results and commentary! … High-lights of some of your members ex-ploits would be great for all of our readers.

Thank you to everyone who worked so hard and contributed so much to ensure the Eleventh Annual Wom-en on Target clinic held on October 11, 2014 at the Tusco Rifle Club in Midvale Ohio was a phenomenal success. More than 65 women par-ticipated with almost 70 volunteers giving generously of their time and firearms. We had to limit the num-ber of participants due to time, space and monetary constraints but we could have easily filled two clin-ics.

This amazing clinic was presented with the generous funding of the National Rifle Association Founda-tion and the Friends of the NRA as well as the outpouring of support from firearm community vendors and Tusco Rifle Club. We present-ed one-on-one training in safety and responsible gun handling skills with smallbore rifle, military rifles, handguns, shotguns and air guns as well as archery, paintball and airsoft training.

The ladies gained a healthy respect for firearms and had their firearm fears and negative stereotypes shat-tered. It was life changing for many

The Junior Olympic Regional Qualifier was held on Saturday, Dec. 6 2014 with 23 entries for Sport and Air Pistol. The events were very competitive, in three of the four events, first and second place was separated by a mere one point. All of the youth in attendance shot very well, and we all had a great time (even if some of us did get second by one point). Our match began with Sport Pistol, consisting of shooting 30 shots precision and 40 shots duel with a .22. For the girls, Zoe Gibson took bronze with a 464/600, Dana Cressman, finished second, with a score of 467/600, and Jessica Syme won with a score of 507/600. Robert Delagrange placed third in the men's sport pistol, with a score of 508/600. Bryce Tucker silvered with a 538/600, his brother Brett fin-ished one point ahead of him with a 539/600. Next, the participants shot air pistol. First and second place were separated by one point in both the women's and men's events. Dana Cressman finished third for the women

with a score of 307/400. In second, Jessica Syme shot a 323/400 and Zoe Gibson won with a score of 324/400. Robert Delagrange finished 3rd in the men's with a score of 512/600. Bryce Tucker silvered with a 535/600, his brother Brett again winning by one point with a 536/600. The first place State finishers at this match should receive an automatic invite to the Junior Olym-pics at the Olympic Training Center, Colorado Springs, CO because their scores exceeded the minimum. Then invites are sent out to individuals with the next highest scores. Thus, all of the shooters are eagerly waiting to hear how their results will compare to the other youth across the nation. Last year, four ORPA Juniors partic-ipated in the Junior Olympics, and we had a blast. The team's next match is the Camp Perry Open, January 17th and 18th for air pistol. Stay tuned for future ORPA Junior Pistol team news--we'll let you know how we did!

New for 2015 – ORPA-Sponsored Long Range Team Match Approved for Camp PerryBy Edward Shank, Long Range Coordinator

The 2014 shooting season is pretty much a mem-ory and thoughts of re-loading; working brass and finding the perfect load haunts us as the hol-iday season is over. We now turn our attention to the 2015 shooting season with high expectations and hopes of walking onto the stage of the Camp Perry Auditorium to accept our award. Team events will be part of that quest and new for this year is an Ohio Rifle and Pistol sponsored Palma four-person team match in which it will be an any rifle/ any sight division. Meaning scoped rifles of any caliber can be used in the Palma Team match, (match number- 525). As usual the Palma Team match will also have teams in divisions using the Palma Rifle (match -523) and the Service Rifle (match- 524). All long range team matches will be comprised of a four-person team for all long range team events including the Herrick, Roumanian and Palma team matches.

The second approved ORPA-sponsored team for 2015 is for a full-bore four-person team for the 2015 Full-bore World Championship to be fired at Camp Perry. As similar to the Herrick, Rouma-nian and Palma Team matches, O RPA will pay half of the entry fees. Due to the number of In-ternational teams and the high volume of shoot-ers, the NRA will fill the range firing points first with the International teams and then start accept-ing US teams with High Master and then Master Shooters. Rules and Regulations may be found in the 2014 December Issue of USA shooting or link to; [email protected]. A team ORPA applica-tion available on the next page must be completed then returned to me by the May 15. Charles Rowe will be the team captain and a firing member of the team. Acceptance to the team will be based on long range scores and classification.

As a reminder, The Alliance Rifle Club in Mal-vern, Ohio will be hosting a Regional Fullbore Match early in 2015. The Malvern Regional Full-bore match would provide a great opportunity as a precursor to the 2015 World Championship Full-bore match to be held at Camp Perry.

Important: Date Change - 2014National Matches Jr. Smallbore Camp

As many of you smallbore shooters are aware, the 2014National Smallbore Championships will not be held atCamp Perry this summer. This required a date changefor the National Junior Smallbore Camp which has alwaysbeen held during the Prone Phase of Smallbore Nationals. This year’s camp will run from Saturday, July 5 throughThursday, July 10. We will still be using the wonderfulcovered Petrarca Range at Camp Perry and will still havethe great and dedicated staff of NRA certified coaches. There will only be 62 firing points open to us this summerinstead of our 72 points so those who are interested inattending camp will want to get their camp forms in early. The camp form for 2014 should be available on the NRAwebsite in early March. Remember that you need asectional score for your camp application also so planthat into your competition schedule this spring. Andquestions should be directed to Russ Evans [email protected] or (330) 534-5344.
