CHRIST THE KING LUTHERAN CHURCH 1505 S. FORD STREET, REDLANDS, CA 92373 (909) 793-5703 ctkredlands.org MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTOR NOVEMBER 2019 Dearly beloved of Christ the King, The Lord be with you. C ORNERSTONE Sometime in the month of November, we will be receiving new members. Some are coming into our happy congregation by way of transfer, others by profession of faith, and still others by way of formal instruction in Lutheran teaching. Humanly speaking, we are strengthened by these new brothers and sisters. In various ways and at various times, each of us has been incorporated into the body of Christ. It is God Himself who oversees our life in Christ, our life in His church. In real time, the substance of the following verse is played out among us: “God wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth” (1 Timothy 2:4). To be sure, the Lord is still at His work. “My Father is working until now, and I am working” (John 5:17). The church of Christ is never static. Oftentimes, we simply view the world through the lens of our own life – what is changing, what is staying the same. We age, our circumstances change, dear ones move away, children grow up – how we see the world is, perhaps too much, based on what we are going through personally. How about God’s perspective? Does He get rattled by the chaos that swirls around us? Nope. God knows that He is achieving His purposes. The number of those being saved is growing daily (Acts 2:47). As of late, we have transferred members of our beloved parish to the church Triumphant. The church is heaven is constantly growing. Think about that for a moment. Think about that the next time that the devil tempts you to believe that the church is becoming ineffective in our contemporary era. Think about that the next time you are tempted to believe that the enemies of the church are more powerful that the One who governs the church. Think about that the next time the world and its constant pressures become overlarge in your heart and mind. God is truly at His work. He is invigorating His church with His Holy Spirit. We are the witnesses of what God continues to do. I pray that the eyes of our hearts are open to see the wonder of God continually saving those who are lost. To see it is to be blessed. November also marks the end of the church year. The last few Sundays of the church year are devoted to eschatology (the Biblical portrait of the end of this world). It is a solemn topic that motivates us to prepare. One of my favorite bible passages regarding the end of all things is Romans 8:18-30. Verse 18 sets the happy tone: “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us” (Romans 8:18). Whatever it is that we must endure in this life is going to be incredibly overwhelmed by radical goodness. That is a divine promise. Armed with the awareness of what God continues to do among us, we walk forward with a vigor that goes beyond human origin. Strong, we stride into the days ahead of us. God is with us. The Lord Christ, crucified and risen, calls us each by name and we follow Him. Thankful that we too are part of the one, holy, Christian, and apostolic church, we see the bounty of His ongoing work in our midst. Thanks be to God for Christ the King Lutheran Church. To God alone be the glory. Peace be with you, Pastor Smith

MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTOR NOVEMBER 2019

Dearly beloved of Christ the King, The Lord be with you.

CORNERSTONE

Sometime in the month of November, we will be receiving new members. PREACHING: An interview with Luther On Oct. 31, 1517, Martin Luther nailed the 95 Theses to the Castle Church door in Wittenberg, Germany. In commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, LCMS President Rev. Dr. Matthew C. Harrison commissioned Preach the Word, stating that, “We put together the Preach the Word project to help pastors work together to improve our preaching of the Gospel across the board.”

In recognition of this anniversary, we went back 502 years to interview Luther on the great Reformation emphasis to preach the Word of God for the faith and life of God’s people.
