UPDATE FROM the Department Chair Greetings to our Iowa Family. It has been a season of change in our department. Aſter over 40 years, we said goodbye to Anita Forbes. However, we are honored to have Exodus Cardoza and Jeanna Holmes at the helm in our office. Jeanna lives in Iowa City and is in the office during the morning. We are lucky to have her artistic talents and her knowledge of the Iowa City arts scene in our office. We were sad Dr. Arwa Owais has taken a leave of absence from the Department. However, we are happy she is with her family in Texas and we are thankful she doesn’t have snakes in her backyard. We wish her well in her new endeavors. We are very fortunate to have Dr. Amy Lesch, a 2018 dental public health and pediatric dental graduate, as a Visiting Assistant Professor dividing her time between us and the silver diamine fluoride study in Preventive and Community Dentistry. We are also very excited that Dr. Polly Iben will be transitioning from private practice to teaching at the College of Dentistry over the next year. Over the past 50 years, we have had amazing leaders in our department and we are lucky to have many of these leaders still living in the area. It is fun to see them at department gatherings or out in the community. Our faculty looks to these individuals for guidance and the current residents learn about the history of our professions. Please read more about them in this newsletter and know that they are still in the area, and contributing to our profession and the community. dentistry ISSUE 3 DECEMBER 2018 Improving the oral health of infants, children, adolescents and persons with special health care needs. Dr. Stephen Goepferd (Faculty 1978-2006)Dr. Goepferd didn’t just retire when he retired from the University of Iowa, he actually had a 7 year career driving the Johnson County SEATS bus. Although he enjoyed the change of pace for Johnson County, he has now officially retired and enjoys spending time with his grandchildren. He and his wife Bernie currently have 5 grandchildren: twin grandsons who are 5, a grandson who is 4, and a grandson and granddaughter who are 3. Both of his daughters and their spouses live in Minnesota so they make a lot of trips North, but still consider Iowa City their home. His advice to his colleagues is to not retire unless you have a plan to spend your new found free time.

Our Emeriti Faculty

Dr. Jerry Walker (Faculty 1968-2002)Dr. Walker started his retirement as a volunteer cross country coach for the University of Iowa for a few years. Then he worked at the University of Nebraska Medical Center part-time (and got to be closer to his grandkids for a few years). When he decided to come back to Iowa City full-time in 2007, he became a volunteer reading and math support teacher at SE Junior High in Iowa City for 12 years. Even though he has cut back on his volunteering (which was every day for about 3 hours a day) he has not slowed down. We were lucky to have him as an adjunct faculty member in Pediatric Dentistry for about 1 day a week from 2007-2015. Today you may find him in the community getting his 15,000-20,000 steps in a day. If he’s not walking, he’s spending time finishing all the puzzles in the newspaper. He is lucky to get to spend time with his son every week and his daughter takes care of him from afar. Dr. Walker also enjoys his five grandchildren. His advice to dentists: You can enjoy the treatment of kids and even get enjoyment from the experience.

Dr. Jimmy Pinkham (Faculty 1972-2003)When Dr. Pinkham retired, he had to make a big decision about where he wanted to retire. He realized the best place was right in front of him here in Iowa City, Iowa. Although he spends a great deal of time here, he spends a few months in the fall either in the Outer Banks of North Carolina or in the Gulf Shores of Alabama. Since retirement, he’s become a professional student again taking classes he didn’t take when he was on the pre-dental track during his undergraduate days. This is part of a community endeavor at the University of Iowa to bring adult learners to the classroom. Dr. Pinkham is lucky to be close to his son Beau in Iowa City, and his daughter Tyli who lives in North Carolina. His advice is that this is a great specialty so stay active with the Academy and you will grow. Also to enjoy your training.

Dr. Arthur Nowak (Faculty 1973-2000)Dr. Nowak didn’t take retirement lightly, he spent a decade as the Executive Director for the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and currently is a Fellow for the AAPD Health Policy and Research Center. He has also been an Editor for Pediatric Dentistry: Infancy through Adolescence 5th and 6th editions, Co-Editor of The Handbook of Pediatric Dentistry 4th and 5th editions, and continues to be an editor for Practical Reviews in Pediatric Dentistry. In the community, Dr. Nowak volunteers at the Free Medical and Dental Clinic, is a Member of the Advisory Board for the Iowa City Community Schools Healthy Kids School Clinics, and is on the Board of Directors for the Community Foundation of Johnson County. He and his wife Ginger continue to make University Heights, Iowa their home. When they have time they visit their 4 children and 5 grandchildren. His advice to dentists: Enjoy each day fully and be thankful for all you have.

Dr. Cynthia Christensen (Faculty 2002-2010)Dr. Christensen has been traveling and planning for more trips. She wishes for world peace so that she can visit some of her dream destinations like the Pyramids and Istanbul. In the summer months she keeps busy with intense gardening, landscaping, and making large ceramic garden sculptures. She lives on her hobby farm in Shueyville, Iowa with two totally pampered horses and “a dog who allows me to live in her house”. Her puppy is old enough and calm enough to test as a therapy dog so they may be visiting Children’s Hospital if she passes muster. Her advice to the current residents/dentists: Don’t wait too long to get to your bucket list, because a good one can take some time.

This past year we had on-site interviews for 26 people. Our resi-dents, faculty and staff spend a weekend getting to know the can-didates and interview each of them. We then have a social event on Saturday evening at the Kinnick Press Box. We collapsed the event into one weekend during the building renovation and it turns out the candidates and the faculty/residents liked the opportunity to not be pulled in multiple places during the interview process. The candidates also liked not having to take time off school/work.

We were lucky to match all 5 of our spots during the January 2018 Match Day. Our current 1st-year residents are Drs. Alison Christensen (Iowa), Jennifer Feingold (Iowa), Katrina Goebel (Creighton), Paula Gomez (Iowa), and Kyle Nordeen (Minnesota). We are always excited to see what the next year brings each January.

Thank you to our Alumni who provide letters of recommendation. You serve as great mentors and you know the profession and if the candidates will fit into our Iowa Family.

2018 Residents Farewell Dinner

On September 17, we celebrated the 20th anniversary of our Infant Oral

Health Program (IOHP) located at the local WIC Program. From a personal

standpoint, I can relate to many of the mothers and children we serve because

I was once a low-income, immigrant, single mother who faced the challenges

to provide the day-to-day basic needs to my child. We have served thousands

of infants and toddlers free of charge to the families, given the opportunity for

hundreds of dental students and dozens of pediatric dentistry and medicine

residents to gain hands-on experience treating low-income high-caries risk

young children in a public health setting, as well as utilized the data we have

collected to conduct research in the field of ECC.

A note of gratitude to Dr. Michael Kanellis for helping me co-found this

program. Huge thanks to the UI College of Dentistry Administration, Family

Dentistry Department, Johnson County Department of Public Health,

Iowa Department of Public Health Oral and Health Delivery Systems, Stead

Family Department of Pediatrics, and Delta Dental of Iowa Foundation for

their constant support towards this program. It takes a village and passionate

people to make a difference!—Dr. Karin Weber-Gasparoni

Dr. Clemens FullWe are deeply saddened by the death of our friend, mentor, and colleague, Dr. Full, who passed away on December 8, 2018. He was a member of our department from 1963-1993. Many remember that Dr. Full had amazing behavior manage-ment skills and “amazing hands” in pediatric dental treatment. Many of our residents learned about interceptive orthodontics from him. His passion for children’s oral health was widely known. During his career, he was Director of Hospital School (CDD) and the Graduate Program. What a lot of people don’t know is that in his spare time he was a pilot and often flew to Northwest Iowa to see his family. In his retirement, he was also known as the guy who fixed the games at his son’s business. He and his wife Kay continued to live in Iowa City during his retirement. He is survived by his wife, Kay, his two children David and Dennis, and five grandchildren. In the spring of 2018, Elsevier Publishing Company released the sixth edition of the textbook Pediatric Dentistry: Infancy through Adolescence. This text is reported to be the best selling international textbook in pediatric dentistry. It is currently published in six languages. New to this edition are online case studies as well as an electronic version of the entire text. This textbook has always had strong Iowa ties ever since the release of the first edition which was masterminded

by Dr. Jimmy Pinkham, Professor Emeritus, Department of Pediatric Dentistry, University of Iowa. The current edition continues this strong Iowa presence with 20 contributing authors who are current and previous faculty as well as previous residents of the University of Iowa College of Dentistry.
