It was Ho! Ho! Ho! and jingle bells all the way at the Ormskirk and District Group Children's Christmas party.

The Ormskirk Masonic hall was once again filled to capacity with parents, grandparents, Freemasons and their wives, family and friends who revelling in the excitement of over 60 children thoroughly enjoying themselves.

All the young guests were happily entertained by Fast Eddie, children’s’ disco (Bryan Davidson of Vale of Skelmersdale Lodge No 8719) with plenty of fun, games and competitions. During a break in the festivities the children tucked into light refreshments provided by hall caterers Gary and Angela O’Brien all served up by Santa’s little helpers.

Fast Eddie then continued the party spirit by encouraging the guests to take to the dance floor for a boogie.

Jingle bells then heralded the arrival of the much anticipated guest of honour, 'Father Christmas', who taking time out from his busy schedule preparing for the festive season, made a welcome visit to the hall, and was greeted with a rousing cheer before taking his rightful place amongst his adoring fans.

Each child received a beautifully wrapped gift, selection box and a friendly word from Santa. A taste of Christmas.

Lathom Chapel heralds the Christmas message The annual gathering of the Ormskirk Group has always heralded the start of the festive season and this year was no exception. The carol service for the brethren and companions of the Ormskirk and District Group of Masonic Lodges and Chapters was once again held at the picturesque Lathom Park Chapel of St John the Divine.

Masons, together with their families and friends, joined together to celebrate the advent of Christmas. Also present was Deputy Provincial Grand Master Philip Gunning and Deputy Grand Superintendent Danny Jones.

The Reverend Canon Michael Smout, warmly welcomed everyone to the chapel. The Christmas story was explained by the reading of nine lessons, presented at intervals throughout the service accompanied by many traditional Christmas carols sung with enthusiasm by the congregation. The lessons were read in turn by Peter Smith Chairman of the Ormskirk Masonic Hall Association, Kevin Casey Master Mason Lodge of Harmony No 580, Edward Harrison Chaplain of Aughton Lodge No 7996 (representing the Chaplains of the Ormskirk Group), Dave Paton WM of Stanley of Bickerstaffe Lodge No 3511, Michael Dutton Lathom Abbey Lodge No 6286, Paul Morgan Master Mason of Rufford Lodge No 7217 (representing the brethren who meet at Park Hall Hotel), Philip Powell past first principal of Ormskirk Priory Chapter No 4007 (representing principals of the Ormskirk and District Group of Lodges and Chapters), Stephen Brereton vice chairman of the Ormskirk and District Group of Lodges and Chapters and by Reverend Canon Michael Smout. Commencing his address to the congregation, Reverend Canon Michael Smout said that the old jokes are the best and probably one of the oldest is that there are two ice-cream companies mentioned in the Old Testament namely Lions of Judah and Walls of Jericho. He went on to talk about the many walls of division and separation in the world and the hope for peace and harmony for the future. The collection on the day was divided between Tithebarn Residential Home and Lathom Park Chapel. A glass of sherry and mince pies were available at the end of the service. All those who attended would undoubtedly have felt that the festive season had begun in a very fitting and enjoyable way.

This year the service was organised by Stephen Brereton ably assisted by group secretary Malcolm Alexander. The order of service books were compiled and printed by Stephen.

The service was made extra special by the accompaniment on the chapel organ by Stewart Whillis who filled the ancient building with musical festive cheer.

The first craft installation meeting of the Ormskirk and District Group for the new Masonic season commenced with Aughton Lodge No 7996 which was well supported by 56 members and visiting brethren including a number of masters in office.

The meeting was opened in a calm and collected manner by WM Chris Cullen and following the

usual business of the lodge he asked Frank Smith to occupy the senior warden’s chair and John Doyle that of the junior warden, with Charles Browne as inner guard. The lodge was honoured on this occasion by the presence of Michael Threlfall PrSGW , representative of the Provincial Grand Master, this being Michael’s first official visit after his installation in May. Michael was accompanied into the meeting by grand officers Trevor Rimmer and Frank Umbers (Ormskirk and District Group Chairman) together with the vice chairman Stephen Brereton, group officers Malcolm Alexander, Martin Howell and other acting Provincial officers.

Chris formally welcomed Michael on behalf of the brethren and wished him a pleasant evening. In his response Michael said how much he was looking forward to the ceremony and thanked Chris for the very warm welcome he had received. Stewart Cranage was presented as master elect to the lodge by John Wootton. Following the obligation Chris asked Edward Harrison acting PrJGD to occupy the chair for the remainder of the ceremony. Edward then installed Stewart into the chair of King Solomon in a confident and sincere manner. This is the fifth time in his Masonic career that Stewart has been WM. The first three times in his mother lodge Jordan Lodge of Good Companions No 201 meeting in London, the fourth time in 2012 for Lathom Abbey Lodge No 6286. The ceremony was under the direction of acting DC Derek Westby who had undertaken the role at very short notice as Ian Tupling had sustained a knee injury whilst attending a music festival in Holland. Derek, who is also the secretary for the lodge, is no stranger to stepping into the breach as on this occasion he was also acting as treasurer. The working tools of the third, second and first degrees were excellently presented by Jim Carrie, Derek Westby and Charles Browne. The address to the master and also to the wardens was given by Eric Croston who eloquently presented with great warmth. The address to the brethren was delivered by the principal guest Michael Threlfall in a very sincere manner. Michael, bringing greetings from the Provincial Grand Master Tony Harrison, congratulated Stewart on attaining the chair once again and wished him and the brethren an enjoyable and fulfilling year in office. Michael also congratulated all those that had taken part in the ceremony, in particular mentioning the excellent installation undertaken by Chris and Edward, with a special thank you to Derek for all his dedicated hard work. At the conclusion of the ceremony Stewart presented Michael with two cheques: £500 for the West Lancashire Freemasons’ Charity and £200 to Friends of Tithebarn. Stewart also announced that further cheques had been distributed to the following; £250 Kingsbury Primary Special School, £200 Royal National Lifeboat Institution, £150 North West Air Ambulance, also work undertaken at the Ormskirk Masonic Hall by a member of the lodge equivalent to £150 donation. Michael congratulated the brethren for their generosity on behalf of the worthy recipients. Following the meeting the brethren retired to the festive board to conclude an excellent evening. The menu comprised of deep fried breaded brie with cranberry dip, steak and ale pie, thick chips served with vegetables followed by jam roly poly and custard or cheese and biscuits. During the evening musical entertainment was provided by Howard Linaker and Ray Beech.

The members of Ormskirk Priory Lodge No 4007 were honoured by the presence of Bootle Group Chairman Ian Gee PAGReg who was the representative of the Provincial Grand Master, at their installation meeting at the Ormskirk Masonic Hall. The ceremony was attended by 24 brethren, which including lodge members, two visiting masters and members of other lodges. The meeting was opened by WM Ian Kennedy and following the usual business, lodge secretary Trevor Martin gave a short eulogy in respect of Ron Goodyear who had tyled for the lodge for six years. In his concluding words Trevor, referring to his charitable work said, “Most members will remember Ron as the tin man but he had a heart of oak.” Following this the brethren stood in respect of departed merit. Ian Kennedy then asked John Wallbank to occupy the senior warden’s chair, Ray Hampson that of the junior warden, and Peter Fairclough as inner guard. Ian Gee was then admitted accompanied by Frank Umbers Ormskirk and District Group Chairman, Brian Fairhurst PAGDC and other grand and Provincial grand officers. Also in

The ceremony was expertly overseen by acting DC Alistair Frew. John Rawcliffe was then presented by Alan Ashcroft, following which he was installed into the chair of King Solomon in an exemplary manner. This is the third time in his Masonic career that John has taken on the master-ship of a lodge; first in Harrock Lodge No 8233 in 1983 and again for its closure at the installation meeting on 26 September 2011. (continued from previous page) The working tools of the third, second (long version) and first degrees were excellently presented by John Roberts a member of the Duke of Connaught Lodge No 2919, Tony Joyce and Eric Ashcroft respectively. The address to the master was delivered in a very warm and sincere manner by John Wallbank and Ian Gee presented the address to the brethren.

Frank then had the pleasure of presenting the new master with the lodges Hall Stone Jewel saying that he should wear it with pride whenever he represents his lodge. At the completion of the ceremony Ian brought greetings to John from the Provincial Grand Master Tony Harrison conveying his congratulations and passing on his very best wishes for the season. He also said that had the PGM been present he would have congratulated the installing master Ian on a job well done. John then presented Ian with cheques to the value of £600 which included £200 to Headway, £200 to Just Giving, £100 West Lancashire Freemasons' Charity and £100 to the Friends of Tithebarn. Ian took the opportunity to thank the brethren for their generosity. After the meeting the brethren retired to an enjoyable meal of cream of vegetable soup, roast lamb with seasonal vegetables followed by cheese and biscuits. This concluded a very enjoyable evening.

The installation ceremony of Lathom Abbey Lodge No 6286 was honoured by the presence of Glynn Wrennall Provincial Grand Charity Steward and representative of the Provincial Grand Master.

After the opening of the lodge by WM Bill Dutch and the general business being completed the brethren stood in respect of Ron Goodyear who passed away during the summer and had tyled for the lodge for over 10 years.

Glynn was then admitted accompanied by grand officers Frank Umbers Ormskirk and District Group Chairman, Brian Fairhurst and Martin Walsh other Provincial grand officers.

Also in attendance was the acting Provincial Grand Superintendent of Works Geoff Lever. 45 brethren, including five masters in office, were treated to an excellent ceremony when Bill installed his successor Richard Prescott into the chair of King Solomon in a confident and sincere manner.

This is the first time in Richard’s Masonic career that he has served the lodge as master. Richard who is now retired worked in IT for many years and is also a member of Unity and Perseverance Chapter No 580. The installation team was led by DC Nigel Kent, ably assisted by ADC Jamie Lomax with additional support from Eddie Durr senior warden, Richie McKay junior warden (who will shortly celebrate his 105th birthday), and Reg Porter inner guard.

An explanation of the working tools of an installed master was expertly presented by David Williams WM of Harmony Lodge No 580 a delight to all brethren present, as this is very rarely witnessed. The third, second and first degree tools were delivered by Martin Walsh, John Mercer and Tom Hughes respectively all of which were flawlessly given.

The address to the master was presented by Eddie Durr with great sincerity and the address to the brethren was presented by the guest of honour Glynn. As the ceremony came to a close Glynn congratulated Richard on behalf of the Provincial Grand Master Tony Harrison and wished him well for the year ahead.

Glynn also on behalf of the PGM congratulated Bill and the installation team on a fine ceremony. Richard had the pleasure of presenting Glynn with seven cheques. These charitable disbursements amounted to the magnificent sum of £2,500, with donations of £400 Alzheimer’s Society, £400 Asthma UK, £400 Parkinson’s UK, £400 The Salvation Army, £400 Rainbow House, £400 North West Blood Bikes Lancs and Lakes and £100 West Lancashire Freemasons’ Charity. (continued from previous page) Glynn congratulated all the brethren for their exceptional generosity on behalf of the all the recipients, commenting that there are very few lodges in this economic climate able to donate such a remarkable amount. The atmosphere at the festive board was very convivial with all enjoying a delightful three course meal of stilton stuffed breaded mushrooms with garlic mayonnaise, roast rump of lamb with seasonal vegetables followed by tiramisu. In responding to the toast to his health Glynn gave his own warm greetings saying that he always looks forward to visiting Ormskirk and once again had been made most welcome. At the close of the evening many of the members were joined by their wives to conclude a very memorable occasion.

Pictured from left to right, are: Glynn Wrennall, Richard Prescott, Bill Dutch and Frank Umbers.

Robert Wright was welcomed by the Lodge of Chivalry No 3974 members to their installation ceremony which saw Colin Frodsham proclaimed as worshipful master of the lodge for the third time.

Colin first occupied the chair in 1977. Over the last few years the membership of the lodge has declined, how-ever, the lodge does have several new members who are progressing through the lodge offices and in order to let them progress in the normal timescale through the offices, Colin agreed to occupy the chair for a second term in 2014, he enjoyed his year in office and was able to visit many lodges as he has now retired from work and was happy to stay in the chair for another year. This was the first visit by Robert to the Lodge of Chivalry since his appointment as Assistant Provincial Grand Master with responsibility for the Ormskirk and Southport Groups.

Robert was accompanied by the Chairman of the Ormskirk and District Group, Frank Umbers along with six acting Provincial officers along with the group vice chairman Stephen Brereton and the group secretary, Malcolm Alexander. Colin commented that it was great to see so many visitors, as along with the group and acting officers there were in excess of 20 other visiting brethren attending the meeting.

The proclamation was carried out by the lodge director of ceremonies, Mark Holloway. Following the proclamation Colin was saluted in each degree by the brethren of the lodge, after which the working tools were delivered by three master Masons: Andrew Bradshaw (third degree), Martin Stewart (second degree) and Martin Fenton (first degree). After appointing his officers (all of whom are light blue, apart from the senior warden), the address to the wardens was given by David Dugdale. The ceremony concluded with the address to the brethren delivered by Mark Holloway. Robert then gave the greetings and good wishes from the Provincial Grand Master Tony Harrison, to Colin, who responded by giving Robert donations totalling £1,050 – WLFC £400, St James the Great £250, Ormskirk Masonic Hall £100, Tithebarn £100, Retina Pigmentosa £100, Wigan Ongology £50 and Dr Naqvi’s Heart Foundation £50. (continued from the previous page) Robert thanked Colin and the lodge members for their generosity as illustrated by the donations made. Robert said: “I am particularly pleased to see the support for the WLFC. In this Province we are pretty well unique, in having our own registered charity.” He also on behalf of the PrGM congratulated all those brethren that took part in the ceremony and wished them a busy and happy Masonic year.

On completion of the meeting the members and their guests retired to the adjacent dining room to partake in the traditional toast to the WM and to enjoy the installation banquet.

Responding to the toast to grand officers Robert said: “I congratulate you on being installed master of this distinguished lodge for a second consecutive year and I trust that you will have a happy and fulfilling year as master and that it proves a successful one for your lodge as I understand you have a candidate.” This was greeted with applause. Robert also congratulated the director of ceremonies Mark Holloway for the manner in which he conducted the ceremony of proclamation and to the officers of the lodge for the hard work which had been carried out, especially the three brethren who delivered the working tools. He then thanked the brethren for the donations he received in the lodge, saying that last year the WLFC made grants to support the needs of Freemasons of the Province who had fallen on hard times, to the widows and to good causes in the community and education. “I hope that illustrates that your donation will be well spent by the charity.”

He also spoke about the Tercentenary in 2017, the information available on the new group and Provincial websites and the use of yellow envelopes to maximise the donations to the WLFC. In closing Robert said he would like to acknowledge the warmth of the reception he had been given by the lodge members he said that it was important that we all continue to enjoy our Freemasonry. He concluded by saying it had been a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

Robert Wright is pictured with Colin Frodsham, Stephen Brereton, and the acting Provincial officers.

The Ormskirk Masonic Hall was bulging at the seams when over 80 members and guests came together to witness the installation ceremony of Stanley of Bickerstaffe Lodge No 3511. The lodge was extremely honoured by the presence of Philip Gunning, Deputy Provincial Grand Master, this being his first visit to the Ormskirk group this season.

Joining Phillip on this auspicious occasion was Assistant Provincial Grand Master Robert Wright, Ormskirk and District Group Chairman Frank Umbers, vice chairman Stephen Brereton together with other grand and acting Provincial grand officers. The evening was in the very capable hands of the Provincial Deputy Grand Directors of Ceremonies David Thomas and Mark Barton.

David led the deputation of distinguished guests into the lodge room and affected the introductions prior to appropriate salutations being made. The installing master Malcolm Sandywell was advised by the guest of honour to ‘relax and enjoy the occasion.’ Malcolm then asked Bill Follett to occupy the position of senior warden, Andrew Clarke that of the junior warden and Ray Thompsett to undertake inner guard following which Mike Barker presented the master elect David Paton. The installing master had obviously taken note of the earlier advice received and proceeded to carry out the ceremony with a calm and dignified competence befitting a well-respected Mason.

A trio of talented family Masons added further lustre to the performance with their magnificent explanations of the working tools in each degree. Gerard Paton (brother) explained those of third degree, Brian Povey (father in law) those in the second and master Mason Mike Paton (brother) put the ‘icing on the cake’ with his faultless performance of those of the first degree. Equally, impressive ritual was performed by experienced Mason Eddie Clarke with the address to the master. Philip had the privilege of presenting the address to the members of the lodge which he undertook with his usual warmth and sincerity. At the completion of the ceremony, Phillip wasted no time in tendering the congratulations and best wishes of the Provincial Grand Master Tony Harrison to the new master and his immediate past master. He also made a particular mention of the work done by the three brethren

(continued from previous page) who had delivered the explanations of the working tools and to underline his admiration for their work, he walked around the lodge to commend them individually.

Following on from this fine and well received tribute, the guest of honour himself was the recipient of the next item of good news in the form of cheques and details of charitable donations made by the lodge. He was both delighted and gratified to announce, with the permission of the WM, that a grand total of £1,000 was to be distributed with the main beneficiaries; £750 West Lancashire Freemasons’ Charity, £150 to Friends of Tythebarn and £100 MacMillan Cancer Support. Philip then took the opportunity to thank the brethren for their generosity. During the installation of the officer of the lodge great hilarity was raised when it was announced that the group secretary Malcolm Alexander was to become the lodge’s assistant secretary and the group chairman was invested as a steward. The last word must go to Eddie Clarke when invested as the lodge’s musical director said “I have one great advantage over you worshipful master, I can’t hear myself playing.”

This is the first time in the chair for David having gone through every office prior to attaining the master ship. David is a very enthusiastic Mason who readily supports out of lodge functions, charity walks, and other fund raising events. Until taking the chair he was charity steward for several years. He comes from a large family of Freemasons, hence the inclusion of two brothers and father in law delivering the working tools and also on the evening David was well supported by members of the Southport group to witness his ceremony. Following the conclusion of the ceremony the brethren retired to enjoy the delights of the festive board, all agreeing that they had witnessed a remarkable occasion carried out to the very highest standard.

The companions of Chapter of Unity and Perseverance No 580, meeting at the Ormskirk Masonic Hall recently came together, here in West Lancashire, to celebrate 50 golden years in the Royal Arch of Thomas Geoffrey Archer PPrDGSwdB of the Province of Cheshire.

The chapter was honoured on the evening by distinguished guest Paul Renton Assistant to the Provincial Grand Principals. Paul was accompanied by Christopher Hamilton, Past Assistant to the Provincial Grand Principals and supported by Brian Fairhurst, Stephen Brereton (group vice chairman) and acting Provincial Grand Stewards Philip Powell and Mike Wallis. Paul was warmly welcomed into the chapter by first principal Michael Rimmer before being offered the first principal’s chair which he readily accepted.

Paul started by saying how much he had looked forward to recognising a further 50 years of service in the Supreme Order of the Holy Royal Arch, and indeed in this the Chapter of Unity & Perseverance, No 580.

Continuing Paul informed the companions that Geoffrey (as he is known) celebrated his 50 years in the craft some 10 years ago in the Lodge of Harmony No 4390 meeting in Sale, Cheshire and in November this year will be celebrating 60 years in the craft at that same lodge, “This evening therefore companions is truly a

mid-celebratory Royal Arch Masonic sandwich.”

Paul then asked DC Trevor Tomlinson to place the celebrant before him in order that he might address him. Once assured that Geoffrey was comfortably seated, he began to detail a story of both personal and Masonic achievement.

Paul commenced by saying, “It is my normal practice to visit each celebrant to introduce myself. In this case, as we will hear later, our esteemed companion lives in Gloucestershire so such a visit was ruled out. However, we have spoken on the phone and I’m delighted to say that there exists a lot of common ground between us. First, Geoffrey has a teaching background and so do I. We both have a common interest of Rugby Union, in particularly involvement with Durham University. And lastly, we have both been involved in different forms of academic research.”

Our celebrant’s story begins with Geoffrey’s birth on 24 September 1930 in South Manchester and that mean, Geoffrey is now in his 85th year. Looking back to the time of his birth, trams, cars and horse drawn vehicles could be seen in Manchester city centre. The thirties opened with struggling economic depression. On a brighter note, Manchester, or Lancashire to be precise, produced two of the biggest superstars during this pre-war period. George Formby and Gracie Fields who became the highest paid artists in the world.

Paul recounted that Geoffrey spent his early years living around Flixton and Heaton Mersey. His father, Thomas Archer, ran a firm connected with the cotton trade and it was via him that Geoffrey was introduced to Masonry; both his father and his seconder, Alf Green, were Old Boys of Manchester Grammar School, both of them having survived the First Word War.

Academics with much in common

(continued from previous page) In terms of education, Geoffrey attended Ellesmere College, Shropshire where he was a border. It was here that his academic interests were fostered in Mathematics and History, and sporting interests in cricket and rugby. Geoffrey captained his school cricket team for two years during the late 1940s and his claim to fame was bowling out Cyril Washbrook, the famous England and Lancashire cricketer.

Moving on, Paul said that after completing his National Service Geoffrey went to Durham University where he gained a 2:1 in Mathematics. Continuing the sporting interest he played for a very strong and successful University First XV playing against many leading club sides in the country. Positioned in the front row, he played against two England hookers, Sam Hodgson and Eric Evans who won 30 caps for England between 1948 and 1958. Paul went on to say that his own personal connection with the university is that he lived in County Durham for a number of years and refereed for the Durham Referees’ Society, often at the university and his claim to fame was refereeing Will Carling, who went on to become England captain.

Paul recounted that on leaving university Geoffrey entered the teaching profession and taught mathematics in two Grammar Schools: Bourne Grammar School in Lincolnshire and Alleyne’s Grammar School in Stone, Staffordshire. Paul added that he himself was originally trained as a woodwork and metalwork teacher, a subject that developed into design and technology with the introduction of the national curriculum. Geoffrey’s interest in mathematics ultimately took him to a career in lecturing in 1962 which began and ended in Ormskirk at Edge Hill College of Education, now Edge Hill University. As a colleague of education, its focus was on the initial training of teachers. Paul said, “When you began your career at Edge Hill Geoffrey, there were about 660 students and 59 staff. Now as a University it has over 16,000 full or part-time students and employs over 3,000 staff – how times have changed in the world of education!” Geoffrey retired from Edge Hill as the Head of the Mathematics Department in 1987 after 25 years of wonderful service, and moved to Gloucestershire to be with his two daughters, Hilary and Penny, an area of the country where you still reside in the historic wool town of Painswick

Paul said, “I mentioned earlier that Geoffrey and I had a common interest in research. I undertook mine whilst working for the RFU in the Referee Department when I studied the relationship that develops between referees and their coaches. Geoffrey’s however appears far exacting and indeed diverse than mine. Whilst working at Edge Hill he was allowed a year off to study at Lancaster University for a Master of Science degree. This clearly had a mathematic bent and focused on the problems associated with the orbit of missiles.”

Paul then moved on to Geoffrey’s Masonic career. Geoffrey was initiated as a Lewis Mason into Lodge of Harmony No 4390 on 15 November 1955, this being a lodge in the Province of Cheshire that meets at the Masonic Hall, Sale, becoming master of that lodge some 12 years later. Geoffrey was awarded his first appointment in the Provincial Grand Lodge of Cheshire in 1989 as a PPrJGD and promoted to PPrJGW in 2005. In terms of the craft, he is also a joining member of Old Ellesmerian Lodge No 5368, meeting in the Province of Shropshire. In 2005 he joined St Lawrence Lodge No 5928, meeting in Stroud, Gloucestershire.

Turning the companion’s attention to the Royal Arch, Paul asked Stephen Brereton Scribe E to read an extract from the minutes of the meeting when Geoffrey was exalted into Chapter of Unity and Perseverance No 580 on the 14 October 1965. Following this Paul said, “Geoffrey whilst you were a member of a lodge in Cheshire it was via your interest in Round Table in Ormskirk that your journey in the Royal Arch began. At Round Table you met Jim Freeman and Bert Skaife. Jim was a Past Z of Unity and Perseverance and Bert was a steward at that time and they enticed you to join.”

Geoffrey’s first progress in the Royal Arch was marked by becoming a joining member in 1989 in the Chapter of Harmony No 4390, associated with his lodge in Sale. Continuing Paul said that by this time Geoffrey had retired from work and had moved to Gloucestershire, and in February 1996 became first principal. From 1994 to 2013 Geoffrey was the treasurer of his lodge, and if that wasn’t enough he was also the treasurer of his chapter for 13 years from 2000 onwards. Clearly, the Province of Cheshire recognised Geoffrey’s service, first by appointing him to the rank of PPrAGSoj in 2003 and then promoting him in 2012 to PPrDGSwdB. Geoffrey also holds high ranks in other orders.

Paul said that in terms of Chapter of Unity and Perseverance Geoffrey had told him that he had lost touch somewhat until returning for the 150th celebrations in 2007 when he renewed old acquaintances and made many new ones.

Paul concluded by saying “Thomas Geoffrey Archer, PPrDGSwdB of the Province of Cheshire, you are a wonderful ambassador for our order and indeed Freemasonry in general and it now gives me the greatest of pleasure to call upon the group vice chairman to read the Certificate from the Province of West Lancashire that recognises your 50 years’ service as a Royal Arch Mason.” Following this Paul had the great pleasure of presenting Geoffrey with the framed certificate.

First principal Michael Rimmer then presented Geoffrey with a cheque for £100 for Macmillan Cancer Support on behalf of the co-principals and companions of the chapter.

After a very emotional ceremony the evening celebrations concluded with a splendid meal at the festive board.

A month later in November, four members of the chapter, Stephen Brererton, David Williams, Richard Prescott and Kevin Casey were privileged to be able to attend his 60th celebration in Craft at the Lodge of Harmony No 4390 in Sale, Cheshire. At that meeting Geoffrey was promoted to PPrSGW and a week later Geoffrey attended a meeting of Harmony Chapter No 4390 in Sale where he was promoted to the rank of Past Provincial Grand Sword Bearer.

Arthur Stanley Lodge No 3469 was consecrated on 29 November 1910, and the first lodge meeting was held at the St Georges Restaurant in Red Cross Street Liverpool. Around 1911 the lodge moved to the Carlton Restaurant in Eberley Street Liverpool but transferred to the Bear’s Paw Public House, 53 Lord Street Liverpool. Meetings continued there until the pub was destroyed by a bomb during an air raid in 1941. The majority of the lodge records, furniture and warrant were destroyed during the raid and that is why the present warrant is a duplicate.

So you can understand how delighted the current lodge secretary, Mike Sheron, was to receive an e-mail from Mr Frederick Morley all the way from Canada containing information regarding a piece of lodge memorabilia dated 1919. Frederick had in his possession a lodge menu relating to ‘The Ladies’ Social’ held at the Bear’s Paw Restaurant, 53 Lord Street, Liverpool on Monday 13 January 1919.

This item came into Frederick’s possession when his mother-in-law came to live with him in Canada in 1990 after the sale of her home in Heswall, Cheshire. It is thought that the document belonged to his wife’s grandfather who was a member of the lodge. In the process of moving house himself this year, he came across the document whilst packing, and after exhaustive research found the web link to Arthur Stanley Lodge in Ormskirk with the intention of repatriating this piece of lodge history. Mike had no hesitation in accepting Frederick’s very kind offer and is now in possession of the memorabilia

Looking back at what history still exists, the lodge Ladies’ Evening was introduced on 13 May 1913 and took the form of an invitation from the lodge for ladies to join the brethren for dinner after a regular meeting. The price of the tickets was three shillings and six pence for each lady. How times have changed if only we had Doc Brown’s DeLorean time travelling car.

After the destruction of the Bear’s Paw Public House the lodge continued to meet on a temporary basis in the basement of the Naval Headquarters in Exchange Flags following which a number of other venues where used in the city before eventually a new home was found at the Masonic Hall in Ormskirk where the lodge has a very bright future.

Great Scott! it’s back to the future

Gilbert Neil Brown was installed as the new WM of Rufford Lodge No 7217 at the Park Hall Hotel, Charnock Richard. Neil was previously WM of Harrock Lodge No 8233 on two occasions and after the lodge surrendered its warrant he became a joining member of Rufford Lodge.

The lodge was honoured by the presence of David Winder Assistant Provincial Grand Master and representative of the Provincial Grand Master Tony Harrison. David was accompanied by Frank Umbers Ormskirk and District Group Chairman, together with the vice chairman Stephen Brereton and other group officers. Also present were three acting Provincial Grand Lodge Officers; Geoffrey

Lever Provincial Grand Superintendent of Works, Michael Cowsley Provincial Junior Grand Deacon and John Butterworth Provincial Assistant Grand Superintendent of Works. A total of 61 brethren attended the meeting which included five grand lodge officers including Eric Picton and Tom Norris. The outgoing master Brian Fairhurst installed Neil in an excellent ceremony. The working tools were presented in an proficient manner by junior brethren of the lodge; Christopher Hayton third degree, Robert Midgley second degree and Philip Smitton that of the first degree. In addition David Williams the WM of Lodge of Harmony No 580 presented the working tools of an installed master which is rarely heard in the lodge. In bringing greetings from the Provincial Grand Master, David acknowledged the excellent work of the lodge members who took part in the ceremony, especially by Brian who had previously installed his successor some 50 years ago when he was last in the chair of Rufford Lodge. On behalf of Tony he made a point of congratulating each of the junior brethren who had presented the working tools in such a fine manner and said he had thoroughly enjoyed the ceremony which had been carried out to a very high standard with so much warmth and pleasure by those taking part. David was then presented with cheques in the total sum of £2,200 to the benefit of the West Lancashire Freemasons’ Charity £1000, Derian House £500, Lancashire and South Cumbria Kidney Patients Association £500 and Friends of Tithebarn £200 for which he gave grateful thanks on behalf of all those who will benefit from the kind generosity of the members. Greetings on behalf of all visiting brethren were given by Geoff Sykes the W M of Standish Lodge No 4955. Following the meeting an excellent festive board was enjoyed by all the brethren, which was followed by the usual Rufford tradition of an auction of pot plants. The master's song was delivered in an excellent manner by Andy Anderson with musical accompaniment by Doug Little.

Tarleton Lodge No 7871 held their first regular lodge meeting at the Park Hall Hotel, Charnock Richard, having recently re-joined the Ormskirk Group of Lodges and Chapters after an absence of many years spent at Leyland. Tarleton Lodge originally held their meetings at the De Trafford Arms Hotel in Croston along with some meetings which were held at the Ormskirk Masonic Hall, before a move was made to Leyland in the mid 1970's. The meeting was opened by WM John Webster who warmly welcomed Frank Umbers Ormskirk Group Chairman. Frank was supported by visiting brethren from other lodges meeting at the hotel. Following the ceremony an excellent festive board was enjoyed by all present during which Frank gave a speech welcoming the members of Tarleton Lodge back into the Ormskirk group.

Ormskirk Priory Lodge No 4007 held a very successful Sunday lunch at the Ormskirk Masonic Hall. 69 guests attended including lodge members, their families and friends, all enjoying lip smacking cuisine prepared by Gary O’Brien, and his staff. The catering at the Masonic Hall has received great reviews especially from the general public rating it highly amongst all the local restaurants. Bert Patterson DC welcomed one and all on behalf of John Rawcliffe WM, who due to family commitments was unable to attend,

wishing everyone an enjoyable afternoon. The guests had pre-booked their menu choices from a wide selection, including starters of chicken liver pate, leek and potato soup, garlic mushrooms; main course of loin of pork, roast beef and Yorkshire pudding or pan fried salmon in hollandaise sauce all followed by a mouth-watering choice of lemon meringue pie, chocolate choux buns or sticky toffee pudding; also available was a tempting choice of children’s menu. Ray Hampson, lodge charity steward, once again organised the event with his usual skilful proficiency. A bumper raffle was held, with all the prizes being donated, which raised the grand sum of £215 for the lodge charity fund. Much hilarity was in evidence when a number of participants received a stalk of sprouts as a result of their winning ticket. Ray completed the afternoon by thanking everyone for coming and supporting what had been a most successful event.

The festive season came early for the Ormskirk Ladies Group. With no meeting in December the ladies decided to bring forward their festive celebration. The O’Brien’s tea room at the Masonic hall was aptly bedecked with twinkling fairy lights and a traditional eye-catching tree festooned with a multitude of baubles. The tables were adorned with festive runners, Christmas candles and crackers.

The committee on this occasion had taken the opportunity to extend an invitation, on behalf of the members, for family and friends to join them for their Christmas meal and fun quiz night. As guests arrived Erica Johnson and Barbara Westby busied themselves selling raffle tickets.

The festivities commenced with Diane Hampson, chairperson, welcoming everyone and wishing them a very enjoyable evening. This was followed by a delicious three course meal of prawn cocktail or melon for starters, a main course of roast turkey with all the trimmings, and for dessert a choice of Christmas pudding with brandy sauce or vanilla ice-cream. To compliment the tea and coffee that followed, Gary O’Brien hall caterer, provided freshly made warm mince pies which was a lovely gesture, most unexpected and very much appreciated. Once everyone had been suitably refreshed, the fun and games began. Out of the blue, and in the guise of Father Christmas, and with bells a-jingling Stewart Cranage invited all to participate in a fun based competitive quiz.

Stewart, WM of Aughton Lodge No 7996 and assistant secretary for Lathom Abbey Lodge No 6286, who has become synonymous with organising and devising quizzes for numerous organisations had everyone racking their brains with questions on television theme tunes, music from the 70’s, guess the price of the groceries and a thrilling visual ‘Catchphrase’ competition.

As part of the evening Derek Westby secretary of Aughton Lodge organised an ‘Irish Bingo’ with the winner Edna Dutch receiving £25. Following the quiz extravaganza a bumper raffle was held with numerous prizes donated by the guests, and a festive hamper presented by the committee members. The evening raised in total the magnificent sum of £173 towards the charities being supported during the ensuing year.

At the conclusion of the evening Diane thanked everyone for their support, with special mention to Stewart for giving his time so generously in providing a night filled with fun and laughter and also to Gary and his staff for the delicious meal and excellent service. In response Barry Hewitt, group publicity officer, thanked the ladies group on behalf of all the guests for their kind invitation to join them, on what had been a most enjoyable evening; wishing them all well for the future.

Aughton Lodge No 7996 at their regular meeting at the Ormskirk Masonic Hall hosted a rendition of the Masonic playlet entitled ‘Talking Heads’. This presentation was adapted from the work developed by the Metropolitan Grand Chapter of London with the intention of raising awareness of the Royal Arch to members of the Craft who have not yet to take that step.

The action takes the form of a dialogue between an experienced past master and a relatively new master Mason as they arrive to get ready for a lodge meeting. The scene is set by a narrator who goes on to interject at various points in the dialogue to add supporting information at the appropriate point. Paul Renton Assistant to the Provincial Grand Principals once again donned his acting cap and undertook the role of the narrator with the assistance of David Harrison taking the part of the experienced past master and member of the Royal Arch; and dressed as the new questioning master Mason, Iain Brown. A screen and a projector were suitably placed in the lodge room to allow illustrations and information to further highlight the narrative of the production.

The WM of Aughton Lodge Stewart Cranage had posted an open invitation to other lodges in the group to attend the presentation and on this occasion, the lodge was honoured by the presence of grand officer and Ormskirk Group Chairman, Frank Umbers, along with the group vice chairman Stephen Brereton. Stewart duly opened the lodge with a very warm welcome and conducted the regular business of the evening informing all how much he had been looking forward to the presentation having himself appeared in an earlier production.

The play commenced with Paul, in his role as the narrator, humourlessly introducing David and Iain and informing all that the action was to take place in the robing room prior to the commencement of a lodge meeting. After the usual greetings, Iain began by commenting about how much he had learnt in the short time he had been a Mason and how, after each meeting he had more questions to ask. David responded by saying he was always willing to help and encourage, and to provide information for the inquiring mind. Iain began by asking David as to the Masonic relevance of a tie he was wearing and jewel he had just put in his breast pocket. David pointed out that the tie and jewel showed that he was a member of the Royal Arch, a beautiful order closely related to the Craft.

Curiosity raised, Iain continued with his questions to which David responded, describing how the present Royal Arch came into being as a result of the union of the two grand lodges in the early 1800’s. Further questions revealed the relevance of the Royal Arch to the Craft and provided information regarding the background to the ritual and what was expected of a Royal Arch companion in terms of commitment, time and cost of membership. From time to time Paul was asked to shed further light on aspects raised during the proceedings this was further highlighted by numerous informative slides and illustrations. The presentation concluded with the distribution of a leaflet entitled, ‘The Next Step in Freemasonry’ and an introduction to the lodge and group Royal Arch contact who just happened to be the lodges very own WM.

Paul brought the proceedings to a close by saying that this was in no way to be considered a ‘hard sell’ and he hoped that the presentation had provided those brothers present, who were not members of the Royal Arch, with much food for thought. Indeed it may also have furthered the Masonic knowledge of those brethren who are already members.

Later at the festive board Stewart thanked Paul and his team for their excellent presentation of ‘Talking Heads’ commenting that he hoped that this had provided an insight into the Royal Arch and hopefully some encouragement to those brethren who were yet to consider taking the next step.

Every year Harmony Lodge No 580 meeting at the Ormskirk Masonic Hall targets a specific charity at one of their social events. Earlier this year the members held a Beetle Drive and Quiz Night. The money they raised from this event was specifically for the Walton Salvation Army Christmas Appeal. Worshipful master David Williams had already decided to support this charity during his year in office when he was master elect. During December David met a lovely lady by the name of Jeanette Griffiths, Community Centre Manager for the Walton Salvation Army Corps to present to her on behalf of the lodge a cheque for £300. The Salvation Army Christmas Appeal does receive a small grant from central government but largely they depend on the general public donating. Donations can be in the form of food, children’s toys, and gifts for older people, clothing and of course good old fashioned money. The lodge’s donation will go towards buying Christmas toys for local children up to the age of 13. Jeanette explained that she and her team work closely with local Social Services to ensure that only the really needy children receive the donated toys and sweets for Christmas. These children come from desperately poor, often single parent families, who would otherwise never receive any form of Christmas gift from anyone. Continuing Jeanette said that food donations also help out with feeding families who can barely afford to buy food on the best of days; not just

on Christmas Day. At present Walton Salvation Army have 410 local children on their Christmas gift list, which unfortunately gets bigger every year. Just recently the charity has also taken on a nearby senior citizens rest home. Most of the elderly residents there have no families to visit them or to receive gifts. On behalf of the Salvation Army Jeanette thanked David and all the members of the lodge for their very generous donation.

A joint Christmas social evening held at the Park Hall Hotel, Charnock Richard between Rufford Lodge No.7217 and Tarleton Lodge No.7871 was a great success. 80 members, wives and guests enjoyed an excellent meal and entertainment. Father Christmas paid an early visit distributing gifts with a Chorley raffle raising £260 for the charities. John Webster the Worshipful Master of Tarleton Lodge welcomed everyone and thanked them for their support.

A meeting of the Ormskirk Group Lodge and Chapter Almoners was recently held in the Arthur Stanley room at the Ormskirk Masonic Hall. It was an opportunity for all the almoners to receive an explanation of the new care structure and their role within it.

The Deputy to the Provincial Grand Almoner Paul Webster was in attendance together with Derek Midgley who is the pastoral care officer for the Southport and Ormskirk Groups, Eric Binks the admin care officer for the Southport and Ormskirk post code areas and Tom Bradfield-Kay who is the admin and PR care officer for the Southport, Ormskirk and Bootle areas.

Also in attendance were Frank Umbers Ormskirk Group Chairman, the vice chairman Stephen Brereton and the group secretary Malcolm Alexander.

There was an excellent 95% turnout of the lodge and chapter almoners from the Ormskirk group, with only one lodge not represented. In addition there was a visiting almoner from the Southport group and one assistant to the almoner present making a total of 24 brethren and companions.

The new almoners within the group were introduced, Tom McKenzie (Arthur Stanley No 3469), Keith Murden (Lodge of Chivalry No 3974), John Thompson (Standish No 4995), Tom Ryding (Tarleton No 7871) and Jim Holt (Vale of Skelmersdale No 8719).

Frank welcomed everyone to the meeting and thanked them for the excellent support to what would be a very important meeting advising every one of the recent changes in the new care system. He then handed over to Paul Webster who introduced the three members of the care team, saying that Derek Midgley would be the first point of contact with all the lodge and chapter almoners within the Ormskirk group regarding potential new applicants for Masonic assistance. He will direct them on to the appropriate admin care officer for each particular post code area. Derek will keep the almoners updated on any changes as they arise and provide assistance to them whenever needed. He will also keep the group chairman updated on news from the care team and the charities.

Eric Binks would deal with all applications for Masonic assistance and subsequent re-applications within the PR8, PR9, L39 and L40 post codes. Tom Bradfield-Kay would assist the admin care officers covering the Southport, Ormskirk and Bootle areas as required and would deliver the new charity presentation video to any meetings when requested in these areas.

Paul then introduced a very enlightening and informative new care presentation video which featured the Provincial Grand Almoner Ernie Greenhalgh, explaining the work of each of the charities and the recent changes being made to the care structure, together with contributions from Esther Rantzen and the Provincial Grand Master Tony Harrison. He followed this by explaining in more detail some of the recent changes. Derek then continued with other advice and guidance which particularly related to the lodge and chapter almoners and this was followed by a very interesting question and answer session.

The meeting was concluded by Frank, thanking all the almoners for their hard work and the care team for an excellent and productive meeting.
