Welcome!

On behalf of the entire 2013 Orientation Staff, congratulations on becoming a member of this year’s talented first-year class and a part of the Michigan Technological University community! Orientation helps new first-year students lay a strong foundation for their university experience and provides a welcoming atmosphere where students can develop connections to campus. Throughout Orientation Week you will:

• Learn how to navigate the academic and social transitions to college.

• Get involved and meet new people.

• Find out about campus resources, services, and opportunities for involvement.

• Attend Day Zero in preparation for some of your fall courses.

• Have fun!

During Orientation Week, you will receive a tremendous amount of valuable information. Some of this information you will be able to use right away; some you may need to use later. As you begin to get comfortable here, take time to explore your different areas of interest. While you are challenging yourself academically, get to know different types of people, try something new, and make the most of every minute here at Michigan Tech.

Your Orientation Team Leaders (OTLs), academic advisors, professors, Resident Assistants (RAs), Commuter Assistants (CAs), and many others are here to assist you throughout your years at Tech. úMove into your room.

ú There is a 30-minute time limit for unloading your belongings at the residence halls to ensure that the process runs smoothly for everyone.

ú After unloading, please park student cars in lots 9, 10, 21, or 24 to keep the unloading zones clear during move-in weekend. You may move your vehicle to your designated lot on Monday, August 26. All visitors and parents must park their vehicles in lots 9 or 10.

úMake sure to get your HuskyCard before Monday, August 26, as you will need this for swipe access to computer labs, your residence hall, and the dining hall for meals. (See below for details)

úIf you have a car, confirm and finalize your parking arrangements:

ú If you registered online for your parking assignment, you must pick up your parking decal at Transportation Services, located in the Van Pelt and Opie Library (17) for move-in weekend.

ú If you have not yet registered your vehicle, go to Transportation Services, located in the Van Pelt and Opie Library (17) for move-in weekend, to do so as soon as possible.

Note: You will need a photo ID and current vehicle registration to pick up your parking decal.

úGet your computer connected. If you need assistance, stop by the Library and IT Service Center in the Van Pelt and Opie Library (17) or call 906-487-1111.

úGet your textbooks from the bookstore.

Note: You will need to have your HuskyCard in order to access your schedule and list of required textbooks.

úIntroduce yourself to your Resident Assistant (RA).

úLook for your Orientation team assignment on the front of this booklet and get ready to have an awesome Orientation Week!

Getting Your HuskyCardThe HuskyCard is your official Michigan Tech photo identification. This card will give you access to events as well as swipe access to the computer labs, your residence hall, and the dining halls.

Whether you submitted your photo online or need to have it taken, you can get your HuskyCard in the Van Pelt and Opie Library (17). A form of photo ID and your Michigan Tech M-number are needed to get your ID card.

ISO Password Sync

In your Michigan Tech Guide, you received a username and password that will allow you to log in to campus computers and access Michigan Tech online resources such as your Michigan Tech email account and Banweb. However, you must first sync this password in order to use it for each of these services.

To sync your ISO password:

• Go to www.login.mtu.edu

• On the menu on the left side of the page, click Active Directory/ISO Password Synchronization

• Type the username and password that you received with your Michigan Tech Guide to log in

• Enter your password in the required fields and click Sync Password

You can use the same ISO password to access all of Michigan Tech’s resources and services. This will be very important when you register during Orientation, so be sure to sync your password as soon as possible if you have not done so already. If you have misplaced your Michigan Tech Guide, you can get your ISO login information by calling 888-688-1885, emailing mtu4u@mtu.edu, or visiting the Admissions Office in the Administration and Student Services Building (1).

Your Course Schedule and Academic Advisor Information

You should log into MyMichiganTech to print your current course schedule. Go to mymichigantech.mtu.edu and enter your ISO username and password. Click on the Current Students tab, and look for the My Courses section to see your schedule. You will need to have a copy of your course schedule with you during Orientation Week.

On MyMichiganTech, you can also access your academic advisor information. Click on the Current Students tab, then look for the Academic Programs and Advisors box on the left-hand side; this will include your advisor’s name and contact information.

Security Awareness Training Program

Michigan Tech’s Information Security Awareness Training program helps you protect your personal and sensitive information. It is an ongoing process, educating the University community on potential risks and security concerns as well as good information security practices. Our goal is to help you understand the risks in using technology and how to effectively defend against cyber threats.

You will receive an email notification of your enrollment in the Information Security Awareness Training program. Michigan Tech has partnered with SANS Securing the Human to provide you video based training. Please look at this email for further instructions on how to complete your training.

Breakfast Dining HallsJump-start your day with a breakfast to energize you for Orientation. At 8:50 AM, OTLs will begin to line up along the sidewalk of Walker Lawn, holding their team numbers in numerical order, so start looking for your team number at that time. You can find your team number on the front of this booklet. Commuter students can eat in any of the dining halls.

In the event of rain, you will meet your Orientation Team Leader in the lobby of the Rozsa Center at 8:50 AM.**Be sure to bring this booklet to breakfast and your first team meeting.

TOEFL Testing (Team 74) Dow (8) 641Students enrolled in the English as a Second Language (ESL) Program are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) at this time before they will be able to register for classes. Please make sure that you bring your M-number and a form of photo ID to the test.

Modern Language Placement Testing Center Open–French and German Walker (11) 113This test is for students who have pre-registered to take a comprehension test in French or German for placement in the appropriate language course. It is also possible to register on-site. Allow 30 minutes for the test. The test is online, and you will receive your results immediately. Faculty will be available for consultation about placement test results or any other questions about language programs at Michigan Tech.

Advising Open HoursYour academic advisor will be available to answer any questions. Find your advisor’s office location on Banweb (Banweb instructions are on page 6). Computer Science Placement Test Rekhi (28) 214This test is for all computer science, computer systems science, software engineering, computer engineering, and electrical engineering majors with programming experience. If you didn’t take this test online over the summer, now is the time to take it. If you perform well on this test, you will be advised to take an accelerated introduction to computer science (CS1131).

A Whole New World: Culture, Comfort, and Communication in College (Teams 1–13) Dow (8) 641 (Teams 14–36) Fisher (15) 135College provides you with endless opportunities, including the chance to meet new people and make new friends. It can be difficult to open up to complete strangers, but the friends you make and the experiences you share during your college years can last a lifetime. One of the wonderful things about college campuses is that they bring together people from varying backgrounds, allowing you to learn about others and expand your interests while also finding common ground with your fellow students. As exciting and rewarding as this can be, sometimes tension and misunderstandings result from differences in background, expectations, and experiences. To help prepare you, the staff of the Center for Diversity and Inclusion will introduce diversity in a new way, helping you to think about diversity in both your own identity and that of others. This session will make you feel more comfortable engaging others and navigating moments of conflict that may occur as you get to know new people.
