Get Your New Membership Card! To scan into Athletics, for dining and bar service, or to charge to your member account, all Club members need a Photo ID Membership Card. It’s easy to do, takes only a few minutes and you’ll receive your card on the spot! Eligible children ages 13 and older need a Photo ID card with them at all times in order to be in the Club without supervision. To get your card, visit the Membership office on the 5th floor of the main clubhouse, Monday thru Friday from 8 am to 6 pm, or Saturday by appointment (call459-4242).

Understanding the Private Club Business Model (and What it Means for YOU) The business structure of the Spokane Club is quite different from the busi-ness models most professionals are familiar with. As a tax-exempt, non-profit organization owned by its members, a private club (whichhasa501c7IRSdesigna-tion) exists to promote pleasure, recreation, fellowship and other similar nonprofit-able purposes — more familiar business structures include charitable non-profits (witha501c3designation) which exist to promote and generate funding in support of “worthy causes,” and of course, traditional for-profit businesses designed to make money for owners or stockholders. A private club’s non-profit status requires that its operations be supported almost exclusively by membership fees, dues and assessments. Only a small percentage of gross receipts may come from sources outside of the membership without losing its tax-exempt status. The Club cannot offer facilities or services to the general pub-lic that do not further the social or recreational needs of members. Because of this private-community business model, a private club membership is very different from a gym membership at a fitness club. Like monthly association fees shared equally by homeowners in a housing community, membership dues support all of the services available exclusively to the Club community. What does all that mean for you? It means that the Club is not in business to make money off of its members, but to serve them by using dues dollars to provide services and social opportunities in a way that make memberships desirable. It also means that every time you pay dues, dine in the restaurant, attend events, or refer someone to stay in the hotel or bring their event business to the Club, it’s like putting money in your own pocket — it’s all revenue that must be reinvested for the pleasure and recreation of members.

Who decides how the Club provides “pleasure and recreation” for members? The Club is governed by a Board of Trustees that is vested in the Bylaws with the following corporate powers:

a. ToconsiderandpassonallmattersofpolicyaffectingtheClub;b. Tomake, amend, andenforcerulesregulatingtheuseoftheClubfacilities;c. Tomake, amendandenforcerulesforitsgovernment;d. In addition to the Board, the Club is also guided by members who volunteer to serve on Standing Committees as established in the Bylaws. These Committees — Activities, Athletics, House, Membership and Finance — make recommenda-tions to the Board for consideration and final approval. Members are always welcome to sit in on a committee meeting as an observer. It’s a great way to get an inside look at how various aspects of the Club work, or to consider volunteering for possible appointment to a committee. (CommitteeassignmentsaremadebyBoardPresidentsinlatespringeachyear.) In May of each year, an Annual Meeting of the Membership is held to report on strategic decisions and directions for the coming season. New Board Trustees are also elected at that time, with one vote available to each membership in the Family category only. (Votingrightsarealsoconferredupontwoothercategories,however,theyarenolongeropentonewmembers.Membershipsinothercategories,includingAssociate20s,Associate30s,Individual,etc.,donotincludevotingprivileges.) If you have any questions about the business, dues or tax structure of your Club, call Mike Fleig, General Manager, at (509) 459-4230.

A list of current Board trustees, committee chairs and their email addresses is published monthly in Signals magazine;it is also posted on the website.

Paying Your Club Account Account payments are due by the 10th of the month following the date of the statement. There are 5 convenient ways to pay your Club bill:

Mail a check in the return envelope provided.Drop a check in a payment box (in an envelope; no cash please); boxes are located near the Front Desk and both the Downtown and Valley Sport Shops. Pay by credit card or cash in person at the Downtown Front Desk or at the Valley Sport Shop. Deliver a check in person to the Accounting office on the 5th floor of the main clubhouse (during business hours) or at the Valley Sport Shop. Sign up for “EZ-Pay,” our automatic withdrawal program. With EZ-Pay, your monthly membership fee and other Club charges are de-ducted automatically from the checking or savings account of your choice on or around the 10th of each month. (YouwillcontinuetoreceiveaClubstate-mentoutliningyourcharges.) Ask for an EZ-Pay enrollment brochure at the Front Desk or use the form on page 16.

How to Read Your Statement or Dispute a Charge Statements are dated the 20th of each month and mailed a few days later. Each statement includes your membership dues for the next month and any charges made to your account between the 21st of the previous month and the 20th of the current month. Have a question about a charge to your account? Call Accounting at 838-8511 x108 or x109. You may also check your account and dispute a charge through the website — simply click on “Members” at the top to login, then select “Member Statements” for a digital version of your bill, complete with an email link to make submitting your question easy.

Overdue Payments Accounts are considered delinquent if not paid by the 20th of the month fol-lowing the date of the statement, and a 1.5% finance charge is assessed monthly on the unpaid balance. If an account becomes 90-days delinquent, the member receives a privilege suspension letter (revoking all privileges of membership) and the account is reviewed by the Membership Committee.

Membership Cancellation Due to Non-Payment A membership may be cancelled if a 90-days delinquent account is not brought current by the last day of the month in which it became 90-days delin-quent. If not paid, cancelled accounts are referred to the Club’s collection agency and additional penalties will apply.

Should you wish to discon-tinue the automatic withdrawals, just contact Accounting at 459-4232.

Frequently Asked Questions about EZ-Pay:Q. How does EZ-Pay work?A. With EZ-Pay, your monthly Spokane Club payment is automatically withdrawn from the financial institution of your choice.

Q. When is the withdrawal made?A. Payments are withdrawn on the 10th of each month. If the 10th falls on a weekend or holiday, it will be deducted the following business day.

Q. What if I want to have my withdrawal made from a different bank or account? Or discontinue paying my Club bill by electronic funds transfer?A. reciprocal clubsTravel in Style! One of the many benefits of belonging to a private club such as ours is the opportunity to enjoy private clubs in other cities. (This benefit also extends to any guests traveling with you.) The Spokane Club offers reciprocity with some of the most exclusive and highly regarded clubs in the nation. To arrange a visit, start by contacting your destination club for reservations, then contact our Front Desk (838-8511) to request a Letter of Introduction. A separate letter is needed for each club you visit, and for each visit to the same club. The letter is valid for 30 days from the date issued and may be mailed, faxed or picked up in person. Please note that policies vary between clubs:

Some charge a fee for use of athletic facilities if not a guest of their hotel. Several city clubs have strict dress codes. Some clubs require credit cards; others require cash or check. (ChargingservicesatotherclubstoyourSpokaneClubaccountisnotallowed.) Gratuities may be added automatically or not accepted at all.

Our reciprocity contracts require that our members comply with the bylaws and policies of the club being visited; don’t hesitate to inquire about their stan-dards and expectations for guests. For more information on any of our reciprocal clubs, be sure to visit their website, or call the club you wish to visit and they will be happy to assist you. Happy traveling!

What do I do if I need a new membership card? Contact Member Services at 459-4236 if you need a replacement card. Your digitized photo is archived and a replacement card can be left for pick-up at your convenience. If you’d like to update your photo or need a new card for an eligible child, simply stop by the Membership office on the 5th floor of the main clubhouse dur-ing business hours (or the Sales office off the lobby until 6 p.m. most evenings). We can take your photo and print your card on the spot. There is no charge for replacement cards.

How does the Club define “family” as it relates to a Family membership? Family memberships include couples — a primary member and a secondary member who is a spouse or documented shared resident — with or without de-pendent children through age 23 (ages 18 and over must be unmarried full-time college students). The primary/secondary designation can be held by either part-ner. A Family membership is also available to unmarried partners when registered with Washington State or when documentation is verified with the Membership office annually (drivers licenses or checks with the same address, etc.). You may also add an intended spouse to your Family membership within 90 days of a set

wedding date or to combine the accounts in the event you are marrying another member. As a non-profit, member-owned social and recreation community (rath-er than a franchised fitness business), the Club spreads the cost of providing a wholesome and healthy environment for families with children across all memberships — much like a homeowner’s property taxes support schools even if there are no children in the home. Please see page 3, “Understanding

thePrivateClubBusinessModel”for more detail.

Can members of my extended family join the Club at a discount? Yes, members of your extended family can join the Club community for an initiation fee of just $100* with your Family Legacy privileges. Family Legacy recipients must be: • related to you by blood or marriage, • age 21 or over, • a first-time user of the Family Legacy benefit, • willing to apply for membership following the standard process and pay the applicable monthly dues. *ChangestotheLegacyprogrammaybemadeattheBoard’sdiscretion. Contact Member Services at 459-4236 to request an application and a Family Legacy certificate.

How can I let my fellow Club members know about an upcoming athletic event or charity fundraiser that I’m involved with? There are as many worthy causes as there are members at the Club, and it just isn’t possible or appropriate for the organization to promote them all. As a re-sult, publicity or solicitation for any purpose other than Club-related business or events is not permitted within the Club, unless officially sanctioned by the Board or approved by the General Manager. To get the word out about a charity event or fundraiser, members are encour-aged to promote events (while also supporting the Club) with a paid advertise-ment in the weekly e-newsletter or Signals magazine. Please call 459-4535 for information, rates and deadlines. Members may also send press releases and story leads to the Signals office (Spokane Club, Attn: Publications Manager, 1002 W. Riverside, Spokane 99201), or by e-mail to [email protected].

Does the Club have a dress code? Inside the main clubhouse downtown, “business casual” dress is standard unless otherwise stated for specific events. Jeans, walking shorts and nice warm-ups generally considered to be of traditional good taste are allowed in Burgundy’s Restaurant and Bar, although nice dinner attire is always appreciated. Hats and ballcaps, bare midriffs, pants worn so as to expose underwear or other similar “fashion trends” are not appropriate in the dining areas. Workout attire and swim suits are allowed only in the athletic facility. At our Valley location, it is acceptable to enter the facility in workout clothes. While tennis whites are a long-standing tradition, they are not a requirement.

Why is there a charge for Downtown parking in addition to monthly dues? Parking in Spokane’s downtown core is in high demand, and parking staff is required to ensure availability and security for members. The Club’s parking fees are lower than most metered spots and other secured lots and garages. For members who are on-site and actively using the Downtown facilities, the Club offers both open and covered parking adjacent to the Athletic facility on Main Street, as well as space in the garage on the corner of Madison and Sprague (justsouthoftheCathedral). Use your membership card to scan in and out of the lots; the fee will be charged to your account. Long-term permits are available from the Front Desk for the south garage only; prices at press time were $40/month to park while using the Club, $80/month for unlimited parking (pricesandavailabilitysubjecttochange). Parking at Fourth Avenue is free.
