Ready. Set. Go!You’ve received the acceptance letter, finalized your enrollment, and told all of your friends. It’s official—you’re headed to Michigan Technological University this fall. Woo-hoo!

You’ve probably got questions about the start of school and how to prepare this summer. And that’s good, because we’ve got answers. In this booklet, we’ll give you information about room assignments, tuition and financial aid, and the steps you’ll need to take to prepare for your move to Tech.

We’ll also tell you everything you need to know about Orientation—a week full of tours, talks, info sessions, fun events, and time spent with other students.

MyMichiganTechLog on to your MyMichiganTech account at mymichigantech.mtu.edu. This is where you’ll access your Michigan Tech email, receive important information (like course schedules and tuition bills), and more.

TuitionYou will be notified via your Michigan Tech email when your online bill is available. Tuition is plateau—you are billed a flat price no matter the number of credits you’re taking (between 12 and 18). Access your bill and learn about payment options by visiting your MyMichiganTech account.

Financial AidYou’re encouraged to take care of financial needs before arriving on campus.

Federal Direct Loans requires you to complete Direct Loan Entrance Counseling and a Master Promissory Note (MPN). Entrance counseling can be accessed online at www.mtu.edu/finaid/students/current/direct-loan. You will be notified via email when the MPN is ready for signing.

Parents wishing to borrow through the Parent PLUS Loan will find information at www.mtu.edu/finaid/types/loans.

Student Disability ServicesDo you have a disability that could affect your academic experience? Disability Services handles accommodations for disabilities that might impact you in the classroom. Counseling ServicesFor help with personal or academic issues you may face during your time at Michigan Tech, Counseling Services is a great resource. Our counselors are available to help you with anxiety, homesickness, and other challenges. Counseling sessions are free and confidential. Room AssignmentIn late July you will receive a letter with your room assignment, meal plan, mailing address, roommate’s name and contact information, and more. If you have not received your room assignment by August 1, contact Housing and Residential Life at 906-487-2682 or [email protected]. For more information about living on campus, visit www.housing.mtu.edu.

HuskyCardYour Michigan Tech HuskyCard is your official photo ID, room and building access key, residence hall meal pass, and debit card. Upload a photo for your HuskyCard at www.mymichigantech.mtu.edu; it will be ready when you arrive on campus.

Summer Reading as InquiryThis year’s Summer Reading as Inquiry book is Full Body Burden: Growing Up in the Nuclear Shadow of Rocky Flats, by Kristen Iversen. You’ll participate in a group discussion during Orientation Week, so make sure you read the book before arriving on campus!

AlcoholEduAll new incoming Michigan Tech students are required to complete AlcoholEdu, an online course about alcohol and its effects on the mind and body. Whether or not you drink, AlcoholEdu will offer simple strategies for keeping yourself and others safe. Access the program beginning August 1 via your MyMichiganTech account; instructions will be included on your checklist.

New-Student Check-inBefore you can move in to the residence halls or begin Orientation Week, you must check in. New-student check-in is held in the lobby of the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts. You can check in:

Saturday, August 24—9:00 am to 7:00 pm, or

Sunday, August 25—9:00 am to 4:00 pm

At check-in, you’ll receive your Orientation schedule, your Orientation team assignment, your room key (if applicable), and other important information. Your Orientation team will consist of about 20 other first-year students and your Orientation Team Leader (OTL). Your OTL will lead you and your team through the week’s events, and will be a resource to answer your questions.

Move-InMove-in weekend is August 24–25—you can unload your belongings and move into your room after you’ve checked in (see above). The Michigan Tech Welcome Crew—a team of students, faculty, and staff—will assist you throughout the process.

Parent and Family OrientationParent and Family Orientation—a fun and informational introduction to Michigan Tech for family members of first-year students—will be held Sunday, August 25. Families can tour campus, attend info sessions, learn about University resources, and meet other parents in a relaxed environment. For more information, visit www.mtu.edu/compass/orientation/parent.

Sibling Orientation: The College Experience for SiblingsYounger siblings of first-year students can have their own Michigan Tech Orientation experience. Sibling Orientation will be held August 25 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, and is open to youth in grades 6–12. The cost for participation is $25.00, which includes supplies and lunch. Pre-registration is required.

Family PicnicAfter a weekend of travel and unpacking, relax and join us for food and fun at the

Family Picnic—August 25 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. New students and children under five eat for free; family members and guests must purchase tickets in advance

for $10.00 per person.

Orientation WeekFor new first-year students, Orientation Week—August 26–30—kicks off your new life at Michigan Tech. It’s your chance to explore campus and the local community, learn about the zillions of student organizations and ways to get involved on campus, meet with your academic advisor and get prepped for starting classes, and a whole lot more. (Did we mention the massive banana split?)

Orientation TripsOur students will be the first to tell you: one of the best things about Michigan Tech is the location. You’ll be surrounded by some of the most incredible lakes, waterfalls, beaches, and trails in the country—so register for an Orientation Trip and get out and explore! Day and overnight trips are available to places such as the Porcupine Mountains, Copper Harbor, local mines, and more. Trips are scheduled for September 1–2 (the weekend after Orientation Week) and are open to all new first-year students; pre-registration is required.
