. . . SINCE 1922 3.

Nobles, Ladies and Families,Well, I can say this for sure, it has been a very hot and busy summer! We

are back from our 138th Imperial Session in Charlotte, NC, where our newImperial Potentate Al Madsen & Lady Jan were elected and installed at a grandevent. The weather was very HOT!!!!, but we still had a nice time.

There was one item that was passed this year at Imperial that is of majorimportance for all Shriners. Ladies and children of a Noble are allowed to rideon any four-tire vehicle under the discretion of the Potentate. As a result ofthis, I give permission for the ensuing year that they may ride in any non-Shrine sanctioned parade. I would like to say “thank you” to my personal aideIll. John Garhartt and Lady Andrea, and my housing chairman Noble JeremyCunniff and Lady Heather, for all the work they did at Imperial.

The Oriental Shrine Circus will be on Friday, September 14th in Amster-dam, Saturday, September 15th in Queensbury, and Sunday, September 16thin Plattsburgh. Please come out and join us! It is definitely a good time. Also, don’t forget to participate in the Daddy Program.

Summer may be halfway through, but there are still parades left to partic-ipate in. We just attended the Schuylerville Parade. It was a little wet but Ori-ental had a great turnout. A very special “thank you” goes out to Gerry andHarold Goodsell for opening up their home for a lovely picnic after the parade. The Battle of Plattsburgh Parade is on September 8th. Lineup is at 12 noon, stepoff is at 1:00. This year’s Plattsburgh Parade is part of the bicentennial ofthe War of 1812 Commemoration, with many other events scheduled overthe weekend. It would be nice to have a great turnout by all Oriental Shriners. Also, don’t forget the Uncle Sam’s Day Parade in Troy on Sunday, September16th, with stepoff at 1:00 p.m.

Once again, as we have mentioned before, we are still selling tickets forthe quilt raffle. You can see any Divan lady to purchase them. Please also re-member that the gun raffle tickets should be handed in to Walt Cuniff by Au-gust 31st.

Last, but not least, we all need to remember that membership is the keyto our growth. Without membership growth, we have nothing. Therefore, let’sgo out and get some new members! Let us also keep in close contact with thenew members that have recently joined, as we want to keep them active.

We need to remember this is a fraternity, a brotherhood, and family. Weare not here for self-gain, we are here for the kids and the hospitals. We needto work together for one common goal. Let’s support Oriental as a whole, di-vided we will fall, together we will stand tall.

Safe travels until we meet again.Fraternally Yours,Ill. GEORGE R. MUDD SR.Illustrious Potentate

NORCO Clowns Host Getting In Touch WithYour Humorous Side! That was the umbrellaphrase for the classes offered by the NORCOClowns Friday evenings, May 18 - June29. “For a long time local people have told usthat they wanted to be involved in participantdirected educational activities. With the helpof the NORCO Clowns, we allowed that tohappen this spring with some interesting re-sults.” said Fuddi-Duddy recently. “I alwayslearn a lot interacting with our class partici-pants. This different approach was no excep-tion. We had some wonderful discussions andattempted to get our arms around some greatideas. We discussed important subjects thatclowns rarely delve into.”At the conclusion of the program, Certifi-

cates of Participation were presented to NoahVan Denburgh, Mary McCulloch, DebraHarper, Dan Ciufo, Barbara Bird, and SteveAnderson. Our congratulations to one and all for being

part of this unique course of instruction. ———

The Capital Region Clown Arts Festival, aconsortium of clowns in the area who pro-mote clown arts education and traditions, pre-sented several awards during InternationalClown Week, August 1-7.Oriental’s NORCO Clowns were recognized

with the following awards and citations:Junior Joey Development Award to John

“Cornbread” Edwards.Junior Joeys are the future of our art form.

We tend to think of the development of youngclowns as a group effort. We often overlookthe effort and support of parents who cultivatethe talents of their offspring. Cornbread is

Breadcrumb’s Dad. They attend classes to-gether; they dress and make up together; theyappear together; they perform together; andCornbread has inspired Breadcrumb to aspireto excellence. We think this is awesome onboth their parts!Clown Community Spirit Award to Byron

“Blueberry” Moak. “Blueberry” discovered the art of clowning

later in life. With a great sense of humor, awillingness to learn and take risk, combinedwith a dash of color and a nod to traditionalclown entertainment, Byron and his variouscharacters share his laugh making spirit in aexceptional way throughout our Capital Dis-trict community and beyond. Enthusiasm Award to Nick “Breadcrumb”

Edwards. “Breadcrumb” is an impressive junior joey.

As a youngster he has often appeared inShrine Circuses and the Montreal St. Patrick’sDay Parade, entertaining crowds exceeding500,000 people. Nick regularly participates inCRCAF happenings and as a participant in the2012 edition of the Northeast Clown Institutehe was the first place character clown, com-peting against clowns from all over the North-east and Canada. While he is often seen outand about with his Dad and the NORCOClowns, his enthusiasm for the art of clown-ing positively impacts even the most seasonedperformer. Lifetime Achievement Award to NORCO

Clowns.The Oriental Shriners’ NORCO Clowns

have been making smiles from Troy north tothe Canadian border and beyond for over 40years. The laughter they are the source of canbe heard on the streets when they appear inlocal parades, at community events andfundraisers as they clown around, as well asunder the big top at the many Shrine Circusperformances they have been featured in overthe years. Their membership roster includes

award winning clowns who have traveled farand wide, creating smiles, making friends andworking on behalf of the hospital system forchildren that the Shriners support. May thesmiles and laughter continue for another 40-plus years!

Do You Know?BYRON MOAK, PP, Historian

— Answers to June 2012 Questions —1a.) Alfred G. Arvold was the Imperial Potentate from

1944-45. He was a member of El Zagal Shriners whichis located in Fargo, North Dakota.

b.) The Imperial Potentate, Alfred G. Arvold, was theonly Imperial Potentate who had no Imperial Session topreside over. Only national Shrine officers and hospitaltrustees gathered in Chicago in 1945. One can speculatethat many nobles were on various war fronts duringWorld War II, were working in war industries and therewas rationing of gasoline and other items. These wereprobably some of the factors in not having a regular Im-perial Session.

c.) Imperial Potentate Alfred G. Arvold initiated, de-signed and made real his personal dream of a specialdisplay room in the George Washington National Ma-sonic Memorial in Alexandria, Virginia. These Shrinerooms now are called Shrine Rooms East and were re-furbished in 1963

2a.) The Oasis Club was a place for Shriners’ recre-ation. Organized by Oriental Shriners, it was used forclub dinners and card parties. One could enjoy a friendlygame of pool or a sociable game of cards. Members ofthe Shrine Band had rehearsals there before a concert.

b.) The Oasis Club Room was located in the TroyUnion Railroad Station. Railroad patrons enjoyed hear-ing the rehearsals of the Shrine Band waiting for theirtrains.

Shriners Hospitals for Children: Why They Are Important

A History of Specialty CareThe first Shriners Hospitals for Children – opened in the 1920s – were established primarily to care for children who had contracted polio. Today, there are 20 Shriners Hospitals for Children providing care for children with all types of orthopaedic conditions, including clubfoot, hip disorders, limb deficiencies and deformities, scoliosis, and orthopaedic difficulties related to cerebral palsy and other neuromuscular conditions.

In the mid-1960s, Shriners became aware of a lack of medical expertise in pediatric burn care and opened three hospitals specializing in acute and rehabilitative burn care. These hospitals are the only ones initially established exclusively for the treatment of pediatric burns and related conditions. A fourth hospital in our health care system offering treatment for burns also provides care for orthopaedic conditions, spinal cord injury and cleft lip and palate. These hospitals continue to be pioneers in pediatric burn treatment and research and are recognized as leaders in the development of improved and innovative treatment techniques.

In the early 1980s, the Shriners fraternity opened the nation’s first pediatric spinal cord injury rehabilitation centers. There, patients find the complete range of services needed to recover to the fullest extent possible.

Cleft lip and palate is the health care system’s fourth service line. Facial clefts are one of the most common birth defects in the U.S. Despite the frequency of its occurrence, and the severity of the deformities, care for patients with cleft lip and palate can be difficult to obtain. Shriners Hospitals for Children is committed to improving care for children with this condition through a comprehensive, coordinated program of clinical excellence, teaching and research.

Being Eligible for CareAdmission to our hospitals is based solely on medical need. All children, under the age of 18, are eligible for care if there is a reasonable possibility they could benefit from the specialized services available. All services are provided regardless of the ability to pay.

Sharing Knowledge and ExpertiseShriners Hospitals for Children is dedicated to conducting innovative research to provide answers to complex medical difficulties affecting children. Continuing the MissionAt 22 locations throughout North America, our patients receive expert care that allows them to become as healthy and independent as possible, and live happy, fulfilled lives.
