Inaugural Ceremony:
The Learner’s Engagement Activity-2014 was successfully organized at NIOS Regional Centre,
Manas Bhawan, Shyamla Hills, Bhopal on 28/11/2014. Shri. Sanjeev Tyagi, Senior Manager,
Madhya Pradesh Text Book Corporation graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. The ceremony
was inaugurated by the Chief Guest with lighting of the lamp. The audience comprised of
representatives of AIs, tutors and learners. Dr. A.K. Sharma, Regional Director, RC-Bhopal
welcomed the Chief Guest. In his welcome address, Dr. Sharma emphasized upon the
importance of organizing such programmes for the effective grooming of talents. In his address
to the gathering, the Chief Guest applauded the persistent efforts made by NIOS for providing
such a platform to the underprivileged, deprived students of remote areas for the development
and honing of their latent skills.
Activity 1: Role Play
The topics for the Role Play activity were selected by the AIs from within the topics suggested
from the text books prescribed for Secondary courses. The central theme was environment.
Learners from 06 AIs participated in the activity. The participants displayed keen enthusiasm.
They were prepared with props, dresses and appropriate makeup. All the role plays were very
enlightening. In a particular play, a learner played the role of a banana tree in green attire with
leaves attached to his body. The message of the act was to emphasize the importance of trees in
our daily lives. At the end of the said play it was informed that the resources provided by a tree
in its life time are worth a million rupees.

Activity 2: Creative Writing Competition
For the Creative Writing competition the participants were asked to write on any one amongst
the three prescribed topics. The topics were related to the main objective of NIOS to spread
education amongst the deprived students of backward and remote areas. An assessment of the
writings revealed that the learners were very happy with the flexibility of the NIOS system,
flexibility in the selection of subjects, examination pattern, schools etc. It was appreciable how
they made sincere efforts to express their heartfelt emotions. Another key thought that was
evident from their writings was their wish to serve the society, the nation well and to make their
parents happy as well

Activity 3: Poster Making Competition The basic theme of the painting competition was the learning environment. The strokes of
brushes revolved around the topic. The genuine effort of the participants was worth the applause.
In their paintings, learners brought to canvas their daily lives. Paintings depicted learners
working in farms, doing miscellaneous jobs and also studying to quench their thirst for
knowledge. The first prize winner depicted NIOS as the sun illuminating the lives of the learners
with myriad facilities offered by it. Most of the learners depicted NIOS study centers as a part of
their routine lives. The paintings echoed what significant role is being played by NIOS in
fulfilling their dreams of leading a respectable life.
