Wednesday Night’s Fusionism

Chairman’s Blog | 11 Mar 2013 Last Wednesday in Washington, DC, something very rare

happened. For one day and long night, conservatives were united. How we united was even more rare; it was a conservative rally that started in DC and spread across the country.

Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky launched a nationwide conversation last week with his 13-hour filibuster of the president's nominee to lead the CIA. Many want to focus on the debate over drones, but that wasn't the point. As Rand said, once we allow the government to take our constitutional rights we won't get them back—that was why this filibuster was necessary. It was as much about standing against imperial governance as it was about drones.

It was a conversation about basic civil liberties in this country. Presidential power must be checked and conservatives across the country cheered Rand on for standing up and speaking out.

As a State Party Chairman, it was refreshing to see that our Party can still unite behind a common cause. We've seen what can happen when conservatives unite like we did in 2010; and we've seen what happens when many of us stay home, like many did in November 2012. I prefer the 2010 results.

Uniting behind a common cause was precisely what was deemed necessary back in the mid 50's when Frank Meyer, a founding editor of William F. Buckley’s National Review, laid out the possibility—and necessity—of what he called “fusionism,” a union of social conservatives and those of a more libertarian, free-market mindset.

Fusionism happened Wednesday night on the U.S. Senate floor, and it was a powerful sight.

Unfortunately we had some in our Party take pot-shots the next day at the filibuster and those who participated. You're telling me we can't stand together as a Party on even a fundamental conservative principle such as this? Very disappointing to say the least.

The standard plea I hear from talking heads everywhere is that the GOP will rebound only when it communicates to working-class and middle-class voters how its ideas will improve their lives. Well, standing for liberty and fighting against imperial Democrat governance will resonant with these voters!

The American people want a watchdog in Washington these days, so let's own that space as conservatives. More fusionism like we saw on Wednesday night will happen as a result.

Our theme for 2013 is Pray for America, emphasizing

the need for individuals, corporately and individually, to place their faith in the unfailing character of their Creator, who is sovereign over all governments, authorities, and men. To further highlight our theme, we’ve chosen Matthew 12:21 as our Scripture for this year: “In His name the nations will put their hope.”

For our May 2nd observances, Pastor Greg Laurie, our 2013 Honorary Chairman, has written a special prayer to be simultaneously read throughout the nation at noon (EDT).

2013 OK House Session Update Week 5: March 4-7, 2013

Measure Modifying Component of Quality Jobs Act Passes House: A measure focused on modifying a definition of the net benefits rate related to the Quality Jobs Act passed a full vote of the House floor today.

House Bill 1416, by Rep. Elise Hall, modifies the net benefits rate related to the Quality Jobs Act by capping the rate between 5 percent and 6 percent for a company with at least 10 percent of their gross annual payroll going to veterans of the United States military. House Approves Home Bakery Act: Oklahoma House lawmakers voted unanimously this week to approve a bill that would allow home bakeries to operate without a food preparation license.

Home food establishments would be defined as businesses that earn less than $20,000 a year and produces baked goods for sale that do not contain meat or fresh fruit, under the House Bill 1094, which is entitled the Home Bakery Act of 2013. House Passes Antipoverty/Marriage Measure: A measure drafted to fight poverty and promote marriage in Oklahoma passed a full vote of the House of Representatives this week.

House Bill 1908, authored by House Speaker T.W. Shannon, will set aside dollars to create a statewide public service campaign promoting marriage as a tool to fight poverty and decrease the likelihood of child poverty. Oklahoma receives a total of $145 million in federal TANF funds. The public service campaign could be created and run using less than one percent of those federal funds House passes bill protecting rehabilitation, social workers: The House passed HB 2060 this week, which will strengthen the penalty for assaulting social and rehabilitation workers in the course of doing their jobs.

Under HB 2060, social workers and rehabilitation workers would be extended the same protection of other public sector workers, like Department of Corrections officers, whose daily work places them in potentially dangerous situations.

House Votes to Reduce Abuse of Federal Lifeline Phone Program: Legislation to add accountability to a federal program administered by the Oklahoma Corporation Commission was approved unanimously this week by the Oklahoma House of Representatives.

House Bill 2165, by state Rep. Jon Echols, would authorize the Oklahoma Corporation Commission to require more documentation from phone service providers receiving money through the Lifeline program and penalize providers who fail to provide documentation. The federal Lifeline program pays for phone service for low-income individuals.
