NOW YOU KNOW The Real McCoy Elijah McCoy Born free in Colchester, Ontario, Canada, Elijah McCoy’s parents were fugitive slaves who escaped to Canada via the Underground Railroad. Records from the 1870 U.S. Census show the family of 13 moved to Michigan sometime in 1860. At age 15, McCoy was sent to Edinburgh, Scotland for an mechanical engineer apprenticeship. Upon returning to the U.S., he could only find work as a fireman and an oiler for the Michigan Central Railroad despite being a certified engineer. While working for the railroad, McCoy began to test various ideas for the automatic-lubricating of the axles and bearings for the trains. His first U.S. patent was granted in 1872 for the “lubricator cup” - a device that continuously and evenly distributed oil onto moving train parts. The improvement saved time and money as trains frequently had to stop every few miles and oiled manually. The Elijah McCoy Manufacturing Company opened in Detroit, Michigan in 1870. The invention, widely successful, prompted other inventors to reproduce the cup, however many companies only wanted the authentic version; thus the phrase ‘the Real McCoy’ is attributed. McCoy continued to refine and modify his invention receiving over 50 different patents including designs for the ironing board and lawn sprinkler.
