Syed Ather Enam Chair, Department of Surgery

Aga Khan University Karachi, Pakistan

I welcome all the national and international participants to the 3rd Annual Surgical Conference of the Aga Khan University Hospital. We have been able to expand upon last year’s meeting both in terms of the scale, and the scope. This year’s theme and scientific program are focused on ‘Surgical Oncology – Evidence & Practice’. Surgical Oncology is now the core theme of research for the Department of Surgery at the Aga Khan University. A focused meeting such as this one is the perfect opportunity for experts from around the world to gather, exchange ideas, and explore the possibilities of advancing research and policy improvements in a developing country like Pakistan. To allow the participants a substantial hands-on learning experience, workshops & sectional symposiums on 25 different topics have been organized. This year we have endorsement from the European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO) and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). The scientific program that has been developed this year is very exciting and informative. I am thankful to all the guests who have gathered here upon our invitation. I must also thank our collaborating partners, and contributors, who have helped make this event possible and finally, I must congratulate the Organizing Committee for this herculean effort. Aga Khan University in general and the Department of Surgery in particular has maintained its reputation as regional academic leaders, through the organization of AKU Annual Surgical Conference.

S. Ather Enam, S.I. MD, PhD (USA), FRCS (Ire), FRCS (Can, SN), FACS (USA) (Diplomate American Board of Neurological Surgeons) Professor of Neurosurgery Chair, Department of Surgery Aga Khan University, Karachi

Masood Umer Chair, Organizing Committee

3rd Annual Surgical Conference

As chair of the index conference, it is with great pleasure that I welcome all the faculty and residents, especially those coming from overseas and north of Pakistan. It was in November 2016 that I took over this responsibility and since then the organizing committee has been working hard to give a new shape to our conference. This will be a two day conference with Surgical Oncology – Evidence & Practice being the plenary theme. Our aim was to spread awareness about latest oncological techniques in the surgical field. Both days of the scientific programme will involve multidisciplinary sessions involving medical personnel, clinical oncologists, radiation oncologists, basic scientists, oncology nurses and oncological surgeons. This year The European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO) & American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) are the main collaborating proud partners of our conference. The scientific program is more exciting and informative. We are having two plenary sessions and one combined AKU, ESSO & ASCO session. This year we have 25 pre-conference workshops & symposiums. These will all be held in the Centre for Innovation in Medical Education (CIME) & School of Nursing (SONAM) at our university. These will focus on the post graduate residents and giving them a chance for close faculty interaction. The conference APP will be available to bring the whole conference activity on your smart phone. As part of the public aware ness session, we will be organizing a Facebook Live Awareness Session; our surgical faculty of different sub-specialties will be addressing difficult oncology issues, on-line, from questions being asked by general public at large. A unique compilation of cancer related experiences of different patients and faculty members will also be published under the name of ‘The Struggle within Stories of Battles against Cancer’. AKU medical and nursing students are also being given due role in interacting with respective international faculty members.

4

Our hope is to provide our surgeons of all specialties a flavor of oncology which can then help them improve their clinical practice. This meeting will indeed lay the platform for more local and cost-effective innovations targeting our non-affording population. I am sure our brilliant residents will get many new and leading ideas placing them in a much better position to enter independent practice. All our workshops, symposiums & scientific sessions are accredited by AACME. Department of Surgery at AKU plans to hold such mega academic events on an annual basis. Our more than 100 surgical faculty members in the department will continuously strive together to become national flag-bearers in innovative surgical practice and education. I must thank our Department Chair, my Co-chair, all members of Organizing Committee, Scientific Committee, Workshop Committee, Exhibition Committee, Publications Committee, Public Awareness Committee, Inauguration Committee and all program directors who continuously provided instant help and guidance throughout this preparatory period. We also appreciate the tremendous efforts of our collaborating Departments of Nursing, Oncology, Pathology and Radiology for providing us scientific support and related oncology experts to add value to our conference. One cannot conclude anything on this conference without mentioning the tremendous help and input by our secretary, Shariff Charania. He was the real backbone of this conference. Lastly, we must thank our implant and pharmaceutical industry sponsors for supporting us in this endeavor.

Abu al-Qasim al-Zahrawi, known also by his Latin name Albucasis, was born near Cordoba in 936 CE. Considered to be the father of surgery, his outstanding contribution to medicine is his encyclopaedic work Al-Tasrif li-man 'ajaza 'an al-ta'lif, a long and detailed work in thirty treatises. The book contains the earliest pictures of surgical instruments in history. of all the contents of Al-Zahrawi's Al-Tasrif, book 30 on surgery became the most famous and had by far the widest and the greatest influence. In it, he developed all aspects of surgery and its various branches, from ophthalmology and diseases of the ear, nose, and throat, surgery of the head and neck, to general surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology. Military medicine, urology, and orthopaedic surgery were also included. Expressing his credo in this book he states: "Whatever I know, I owe solely to my assiduous reading of books of the ancients, to my desire to understand them and to appropriate this science; then I have added the observation and experience of my whole life."

Ibn Sina, also known as Avicenna (c. 980 – June 1037) was a Persian polymath who is regarded as one of the most significant thinkers and writers of the Islamic Golden Age. Known as the father of Medicine, his most famous works are The Book of Healing – a philosophical and scientific encyclopedia, and The Canon of Medicine – a medical encyclopediawhich became a standard medical text at many medieval universities and remained in use as late as 1650. Besides philosophy and medicine, Avicenna's corpus includes writings on astronomy, alchemy, geography and geology, psychology, Islamic theology, logic, mathematics, physics and poetry.
