Our project, which started with the contractor mobilizing approxi- mately a month ago, is at the mid phase of compleon and progressing as originally planned. The work on hole 15 is almost concluded with the shaping of the green and bunkers, installaon of irrigaon and the green being ready for sod. The plan is to move the sod from the chipping green on the pracce area to this green, which will allow the hole to be playable earlier. The work on the 16 th hole is advancing with the shaping of the green being completed and resulng in it being approximately 30% larger. The hole which has been open for play with reduced yardage up to now, will be moved to a temporary green on the fairway. Shortly, you will be receiving a special notice on the Membership Marketing Plan that has been planned by your Membership Committee. Over the last 20 years, the role of the Committee was that of a gatekeeper, due to the long waiting list to join and dealing with other issues related to categories of membership. I have said many times; the greatest source of new members are the current members themselves. We ask that you please share the pleasure of membership in this fine Club with a friend, and remember the Membership Referral Program calls for a $1,000 credit posted to your account once the new member you’ve referred joins. Should you wish to entertain someone who might be thinking of joining, please bring them for a complimentary round of golf at the club. Contact Membership Manager Kelly Stortz at [email protected] for further information and to make arrangements. Using a popular business book’s phrase, I feel that we truly have all the right seats on the bus filled. Our staff is blessed with superi-or talent in every department which allows us to provide excellence in all phases of our operation. Newer staff members that are showing their talents, including Chef de Cuisine Ali Khan, who’s main responsibility is the new dinner program for the membership. Ali provides Chef Milan with the support necessary to do record numbers in terms of total meals as well as member satisfaction each month. Additionally, our Controller Asad Khan (no relation) has added excellent accountability to our systems and will continue to enhance reports that add to our controls with our new accounting system. As we continue to evolve with this software, we will have a great number of new ways to elevate the quality of member services. Our new Catering Manager, Donna Myers, has done an excellent job of booking new records with profitable banquet business which supplements the club’s financial position. These new staff members along with our other world class Senior Managers, form a team that I would put up against any other club in the State. What a great time to be involved at the Palos Verdes Golf Club! Our Sommelier, Laura Stevenson, has truly upped the bar with the wine list and will be providing the membership with many new tools to enjoy the culinary side of our operation. Her Wine 101 series will provide fun education to the membership. Also scheduled is a tequila, bourbon, and scotch whiskey tastings, along with 4 more wine dinners for the year. As we move closer to finishing the enhancements in the Montemalaga Room, we will be using this area as an additional casual destination on Friday evenings. Please watch for further information on these events in our weekly newsletter e-blasts. Congratulations to our Director of Grounds Extraordinaire on the excellent job on the #15 and #16 remodel. Although this has been a true team effort, Pat Gradoville has been his usual outstanding leader on this project. Again, we are blessed with a fantastic professional such as Pat! I look forward to seeing you on your next visit to your club!

The 2017 Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge Women’s Collegiate Golf Tournament, to be played at PVGC February 12-14, 2017, has proven itself already to have a very competitive field as all 16 teams have been invited to the 2016 Regional Championships. The Regionals will be played at four sites May 5 through 7, 2016, with the top 6 teams from each Regional advancing to the NCAA Championship May 20-25 at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Oregon. The final three days will be televised on the Golf Channel.

Our 2017 Northrop Grumman Tournament invitees and their respective Regions are below:

Baton Rouge Regional – University Club, Baton Rouge: Duke, Florida, Arizona State, Washington.

Bryan, Texas, Regional – Traditions Club, Bryan, Texas: UCLA, Arizona.

Shoal Creek Regional – Shoal Creek Golf Club, Shoal Creek, Alabama: Alabama (SEC Champ), Northwestern (Big 10 Co-Champ), Oklahoma State (Big 12 Champ), California, Tennessee.

Stanford Regional – Stanford Golf Course: USC (PAC 12 Champ), UNLV (Mountain West Champ), San Diego State, Ohio State (Big 10 Co-Champ), Wake Forest.

We have four new teams coming to our tournament next year- Cal, Tennessee, San Diego State, and Northwestern- and the selection of all 16 teams to the Regionals by the NCAA is a great credit to our Collegiate Host, Ohio State Coach, Therese Hession, for her early and accurate evaluation of the university talent.

The PVGC Scholarship program is in full swing with 29 applicants applying for funds. Heartfelt thanks to all of our members for their commitment to this endeavor, and especially to those who have donated “above and beyond” the $50 annual assessment for the scholarship fund. We can’t begin to tell you how much we appreciate your generosity, so I thought it might be better for you to hear from one of our students! Please read the heartfelt message below from Elva Campos, one of our repeating applicants this year. Along with all the students who have applied to receive the scholarships, we are forever grateful for the generosity of the outstanding members of PVGC!

—Peggy Lanigan President, PVGC Scholarship Foundation

My name is Elva Campos. I would really like to begin by saying that I am blown away by the membership's generosity with the scholarship program. Two years ago, I moved back to Los Angeles to continue my education. Soon after I moved back, I secured a position at Palos Verdes Golf Club as a server. I was thrilled to learn that I would have the opportunity to be awarded a scholarship. I could not help but think, “it was meant for me to land this job!” I am sure that my family was even more excited than I was. I have now been at Palos Verdes Golf Club for over 2 years. In that time, I was promoted to the Club Receptionist, a position I absolutely love. Education is extremely important to my family. With your generous assistance, I will be the first person in my family to graduate from college. This opportunity means more than I can express in words. My lifelong dream of graduating from college is now a reality thanks to generous educational scholarships like yours. I am a student at West Los Angeles Community College and first year recipient of the PVGC Scholarship. I hope to earn an associate’s degree before transferring to California State University, Long Beach by Fall 2017. At CSULB I will pursue a B.S. in Business Administration with a concentra-tion in Human Resources. A bachelor’s degree is a step to eventually become an HR Director. I am sincerely honored to even be considered as a recipient of the PVGC educational scholarship. By awarding me the scholarship, you will be lightening my financial burden which will allow me to focus more on the most important aspect of school - learning. I hope one day I will be able to help students as you help the staff here at Palos Verdes Golf Club.

Sincerely,

Elva Campos

Great progress is being made on PCIP II:

All of the major shaping has been completed on the greens, tees, and bunkers.

The sod will be installed on 15 green in the very near future, as well as the rest of the 15th hole.

Sod on old 16 green will be placed on new 16 green in the next week, and 16 will be played to a temporary green on the fairway while the sod matures on the new green site.

Elsewhere around the course, green speed has been a topic of conversation. We have been testing a new greens roller that has not made it to the market yet, but we really like what we see. The machine is a bit heavier but quicker and has more power than any we have ever tried. Speeds increased more than normal as a result of using this roller, explaining the fast conditions present for the Partners Championship tournament. Please visit the blog for the latest news on the golf course maintenance and construction at www.pvgc.blogspot.com See you on the fairways… —Pat Gradoville, CGCS

Director of Course and Grounds

The rhinestone cowgirls, members and guests, hit the trails of the PV Golf Course for the fabulous fun filled annual Spring Member Guest Day. PVGC staff dressed for the occasion in their cowboy outfits looking dapper and adding to the theme. The luncheon round up complete with a delicious barbecue was certainly enhanced with dining room decorations that really made you feel you were in the wild west. Joan Connaghan chairing the event with her committee: Cetha Ericson, Harriet Po, Jan Love, and Lorna Interian made it all spectacular. What was the name of that drink served in a shot glass? This I’m sure added to the happy day. Remember PVWGC golfing events only happen with the volunteer support of our membership. Thank you Jan Love for coordinating all of these events as our Tournament Chair and keeping us updated with our calendar.
