The Orff Source Volume 3

I, I-V and I-IV-V Orff arrangements of traditional and composed folk songs and singing games

Correlates to Musicplay 5-6

With arrangements by Robert A. Amchin, Daphne Price, Lori Price-Wagner, and Judy Sills

The purpose of this collection is to provide the classroom music teacher with a large collection of I, I-V and I-IV-V Orff arrangements of familiar folk songs and singing games as well as some original game songs. These arrangements are of songs used in Grades 5-6 of the Musicplay music program. Teachers with the Musicplay curriculum will find the collection invaluable when using the Orff process. However, you do not have to use the Musicplay curriculum to make excellent use of the many arrangements in this collection.

Teaching an Orff Arrangementby Judy Sills

Process:

The fundamental success of the Orff approach to music education is that it is based on community. That is to say that everything is taught to everybody.

• present the song in its totality• teach the melody on a neutral syllable• repeat the melody phrase by phrase, accumulating the phrases until the entire melody is learned• teach the words repeating the text several times using a variety of vocal inflections, dynamics, and tempi until it is secure• add accompaniment parts one at a time beginning with the bass. Each part should be learned by everyone, preferably as body percussion patterns first, followed with a transfer to the instruments• add movement if appropriate• always remember to allow opportunities for creative input from the children• finish with a final performance which incorporates the song with orchestration, movement, and creative opportunities such as improvisation between verses of the song

Remember that the songs and orchestrations are only a basis to provide each teacher with a framework. It is within this framework that teachers choose and adapt materials to fit the particular needs of their classes. Students with some experience playing Orff arrangements should be encouraged to create their own.

Spanish Game SongAs sung by Lloyda Collins

arranged by Robert A. Amchin

Translation: Citron means “lemon” in Spanish. Most of the song is nonsense syllables.

Game Directions: Students pass a cup to the right on beats one and three. On beats two and four, they pick up the cup that is in front of them. On the words “triki triki trón” the cup is waved to the right, to the left, and then set down to the right. Al Citron is fun to learn, and when it is learned you can teach even more challenging cup games. You can play cup games to any piece of music with a moderate tempo and four measure phrases in 4/4 time. There are selections in the “Listening Resource Kit Level 5” that are great for playing cup games with.

A video of this game is available now in the Musicplay 5 Digital Resources, and will be available soon on itunes and on DVD.

7. Four White HorsesGame Directions: This is a clapping game for groups of four. Begin by teaching the clapping pattern for pair one to the entire class as an action song. Then teach everyone the pattern for pair two. It is essentially the same. On beat two, one pair will clap hands above while the other pair claps hands below. On beat six, they will do the opposite.

The pattern for pair one will be:

clap own hands clap partner’s hands above clap own hands clap side partner’s hands beat 1 beat 2 beat 3 beat 4

clap own hands clap partner’s hands below clap own hands clap side partner’s hands beat 5 beat 6 beat 7 beat 8

The pattern for pair two will be:

clap own hands clap partner’s hands below clap own hands clap side partner’s hands beat 1 beat 2 beat 3 beat 4

clap own hands clap partner’s hands above clap own hands clap side partner’s hands beat 5 beat 6 beat 7 beat 8

Next, have pairs of students try the clapping pattern as you sing the song. When the pairs of students have mastered this step, have the pairs form a group of four, with partners facing each other and try the game all to-gether. A video of this game is available now in the Musicplay 5 Digital Resources, and will be available soon on itunes and on DVD.

8. Funga AlafiaTranslation: You are really welcome my friend.

Movement Directions: Repeat the song four times.First time: Beginning with your right foot, step close to the right for 16 beats. Then step close to the left for 16 beats. The step close can be done with knees bent. Arms should be up, with palms open at shoulder height.Second time:measure 1 - hands on head Represents this thought - With my thoughts I welcome youmeasure 2 - arms out measure 3 - hands to mouth Represents this thought - With my words I welcome youmeasure 4 - arms out measure 5 - hands over heart Represents this thought - With my love I welcome you measure 6 - arms out measure 7 - hands in praying motion Represents this thought - With my prayers I welcome you measure 8 - arms out Third time:measure 1 - jump to the right, half way aroundmeasure 2 - jump to the left, a quarter turnmeasure 3 - jump to the right, half way aroundmeasure 4 - jump to the left, a quarter turn(This movement does not work well on risers. Push arms 2x to right, 2x to left if performing on risers.)Fourth time: repeat step close as you did the first timeBeginning with your right foot, step close to the right for 16 beats. Then step close to the left for 16 beats. The step close can be done with knees bent. Arms should be up, with palms open at shoulder height. (8)

A video of this game is available now in the Musicplay 5 Digital Resources, and will be available soon on itunes and on DVD.

35. ArupusuGame Directions: The words (some of which are nonsense words) tell about the Alps in Japan. In the last two lines of the song, the “ra ra ra ra” are nonsense syllables with no meaning. (Kind of like la la la la...)

Game Directions: Each student should have a partner for this clapping game.A- clap own handsru- clap right hands with a partnerpu- clap own handssu clap left hands with a partnerichi- clap own handsman- clap both partner’s handsja- clap own handsku clasp hands together, turn knuckles so they are facing you and stretch arms out

This pattern repeats until the end of the song.

A video of this game is included in the Digital Resources for Musicplay for Middle School (6) and will be available soon on itunes and on DVD.

The author was taught this song by a mother and daughter from Japan who were in Canada on a teacher ex-change. They said it was a traditional Japanese children’s game. I was taught this clapping pattern by a Japa-nese music education professor at ISME 2006, who also said it was a traditional Japanese children’s game. The melody though is Yankee Doodle. It is interesting how a traditional American melody can become, over time, a traditional Japanese children’s game.

For less than $2000, your school can have a new, standards based K-6 music curriculum with songs and activities that students LOVE! Musicplay is an award winning music program for K-6 schools. Each grade level includes 40 weekly lessons that clearly outline concepts and skills taught in each grade. Musicplay includes seasonal songs, fun songs, rounds, partner songs, folk music, multicultural music and choral music. In the Musicplay curriculum students sing, play in-struments, move to music, listen, create and learn to read and write music. Important concepts are taught through play. Each week in Grades 1-5 a new singing game is taught. Children love music games making this a text that will have your students really excited about learning music!

Musicplay fits well with Orff or Kodàly methodologies, yet it is a program that is used successfully by non-specialist teachers. Orff arrangements are found in The Orff Source Volumes 1, 2, and 3. Students are taught to read and write music through careful sequencing of activities. Extensive listening lessons, maps, activities, cup games and intercom scripts are included in the Listening Resource Kits 1-5, and the included listening examples in Musicplay K and 6. Reproducible song storybooks and Alphabet songs for K-1 teachers integrate with and support early literacy programs.

The Digital Resources (PowerPoints, QuickTime Movies, Smartboard files) replace and greatly enhance the material that is in the student books. The music and lyrics are specially formatted to fit a computer/projector screen. QuickTime movies (with audio) of the music and lyrics for each song are included as well as a wealth of slides to teach note names, solfege, beat, rhythm, dynam-ics, tempo, form, and cultural context. Smart notebook files are included for teachers with Smart-boards. This is an excellent tool for shared reading! Sample lessons, PowerPoint samples, scope and sequence, curriculum correlations and song lists can be found online.
