Background: The Oregon Zoo is the equivalent of the Woodland Park Zoo here in Seattle. It has been around since the late 1800’s but the current location’s structure was developed in the late 1950’s. All of this history makes it the number one zoo in the city and surrounding cities alike. Currently the zoo is recieveing large donations from conservationists and has begun using them for onging changes, additions and improvements. Going in hand with all the updates the zoo has decided to step into the mobile areana and allow its visitors a modernized experience in the form of an Oregon Zoo app.

Target Audience: The app is geared toward parents who: have some to grataute from college educational

levels, have incomes of about $50,000, own a house, are caucasian and are around 38 years old.

Objectives: The purpose of releasing this application is hopefully to have people making return trips to the zoo more often because of the easily accessible updates. When they do return to the zoo they will be able to effortlessly

locate new attractions and events through their phone as well as existing exhibitions and animals.

Obstacles: The major obstacle in this project is going to be the condensation of all the information that will be stored in this app. Since there are many things to consider and a lot of information, including details about specific animals, clutter can easily become a problem. In addition to this the application needs to be engaging and useful enough to a point but also needs to allow visitors enjoyment from physicality of being there and not become a distration. Therefore a balance of information rich and concision needs to be made.

Key Benefit: The most important feature this application has to offer is the ability to aid its users in finding events and attractions quickly. Hand-in-hand with that is all the necessary information about the events will also be available.

Support Statements: The application is a good avenue to follow because other major zoo’s, such as the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, have already started adopting it as a means to add to the overall experience of the trip. It adds an extra dimenson by allowing visitors more information if they need it and it also elliminates the possibility of not making it to the feedings, demonstrations and other scheduled programs on time.

Tone: In order to capture the essence of the Oregon Zoo this application is going to follow very closely to the style of their website while capitalizing on the family oriented aspect of a zoo by adding a lighter feel.


PERSONA - Julie Rohë - Veteranary’s assistant, 46 yrs. old, Zack is 6 yrs. old

Julie Rohë is a single mom who works as a veteranary’s assistant. She does not get to see her son Zackary all the time because of a messy break-up, so she likes to spend the time she is allowed with him doing something meaningful. His favorite thing to do is to play with animals. Julie takes any opportunity she can to bring her son into work so that he can see all the various types of pets people bring in to her. Even though Julie knows that her son is merely fascinated with the animals because they are cute, fluffy, and playful she tries to educate him on things such as breeds and random interesting facts. The zoo is an indisposable resource because of her son and she scrapbooks her journey’s there with pictures of them and the animals.



PERSONA - Emily & Andrew - Serious pet lovers, 32 & 34 yrs. old respectively

Andrew and Emily have been together for over 5 years and share a deep love for animals. They frequently go to zoos and farms around the Portland area just to get their fix of the wonderous creatures that inhabit them. Both Andrew and Emily like to make itineraries of what they want to see/accomplish when they get there because they want to maximize the fun per minute ratio. Both are very particular on the type of things they want to do so they will go off on their own in the beginning of the trip to experience certain things by themselves. Afterwards they will meet up halfway through their trip and share what they saw/did as they finish the rest of the experience together.

PERSONA - Margaret Anderson - First year school teacher, Teaches 3rd grade, Has anxiety issues

Margaret Anderson is a teacher at Woodmere Elementary School in Portland. She is a recent graduate from college and this will be her first year in a classroom as a teacher. Even though she is new to teaching she does not want it to affect the education that her students will recieve. Because of this she wants to take the children out on as many types of field trips as she possibly can. Her philosophy is that it’s easier to learn about things if you can experience it in a natural environment somewhere in real life. Personally she is a very organized individual who gets stressed if things are not where they are supposed to be. Sometimes this need for organization can be overwhelming to her so she likes to switch between tasks frequently.
