amazing animal Superheroes! Superheroes get a lot of their powers from animals. Web spinning, climbing walls like a spider, flying like a bat—you can learn a lot from watching animals. Explore the ways that animals are like superheroes and superheroes are like animals. Learn to be an amazing animal superhero!

Tiger CamP Combined with

entering 1st grade

ZOOm! The Oregon Zoo and Portland Children’s Museum are “zooming” in to look at animals through the lenses of both art and science. Explore the artistic side of nature and spend half the day at the Zoo learning about all the animals that call different habitats home. Spend the rest of the day at the Children’s Museum using paint, drawing, and other art media to explore what makes a habitat.

Please note: Campers will remain with the same staff throughout the week. Both Children’s Museum and Zoo members will receive member discount.

adaptation adventures! Discover how every animal has adaptations to help it survive. Compare the adaptations of the forest dwelling cougar to the cheetahs that live on the grassy plains. Learn why some animals can live in the cold oceans and others are suited for warm rainforests.

habitat Craft! Design and build your own habitat model and create a creature to call your habitat home. Learn from the zoo’s animals and their homes to discover what animals need to survive in habitats from the seas to the skies. Take a special behind the scenes look at the Family Farm barn and learn how we are helping animals survive in the zoo and how you can help animals at home. eco expeditions! Investigate the strategies animals use to avoid competing with each other for food and resources. Go behind the scenes in the butterfly lab and learn how we are helping animals in the wild. Stay late on Thursday to tour the zoo in the twilight. Visit our bats and other nocturnal animals and learn about some of the creatures who are just waking up when you’re getting ready for bed.

animal Welfare! Explore what it takes to care for zoo animals as small as an urchin and as big as an elephant. Meet a veterinarian from Banfield Pet Hospital and learn how zoo animal medicine is similar to taking care of pets at home. Take a field trip to a natural area and discover how animals interact in their natural habitat. Stay overnight at the zoo for a behind the scenes look at the veterinary hospital and animal nutrition center before bedding down (in the tunnel underwater!) at the harbor seal exhibit!

architecture for the animals! Discover the many skills and talents that go into making naturalistic exhibits for animals big and small. Explore how animals, keepers and guests influence how a zoo exhibit looks and what it takes to keep animals healthy. Learn how the zoo builds exhibits and build one of your own. You’ll also take a field trip to a natural area and discover how designers get people excited to explore nature. At the end of the week, see the Elephant Lands’ new Forest Hall before settling in for the night at the lion exhibit (visitor side!)

All meals come with a vegetarian option and choice of water or juice. Sample entrée items may include – hot dogs, corndogs, mac & cheese, pizza, chicken nuggets, Menu changes daily. All meals include a fruit, carrot sticks and dessert. Lunch is not available for Penguin Camp (1/2 day camp that ends at 11:30 a.m.).

Discovery Days camps: $5.25/ day

LaTe Care

Children are supervised in a classroom with a variety of animal themed free-choice learning activities available. Pre-registration is required.

Please note: Early care is not available this year, but we will be starting camp ½ an hour earlier at 8:30 a.m.

Late Care (not available for Penguin Camp)

Monday–Friday, 3:30 p.m.–5:30 p.m.

$50 per full week

$10 per day for the Discovery Days camps.

Our Staff

Our staff is screened for excellence in programming for children. All staff working with children, including substitute counselors, have successfully passed the Oregon Child Care Registry’s criminal background check.

Counselor to student ratios are 1:6 for Kindergarten or younger, 1:8 for 1st grade – 2nd grade, 1:10 for 3rd-8th grades. At no time is any child left unsupervised.

Safety

Zoo security staff members are first aid, CPR and automatic emergency defibrillator (AED) trained. Camp staff are trained to respond to emergency situations. Lead camp staff are first aid trained.

When registering, parents are asked to list the names of authorized transporters. Everyone picking up a child from camp will be required to present photo ID that matches a name on that list.

Can Parents Stay with Kids?

Our camp program is designed for children who are able to be successful in group-oriented programs without parent involvement.

medication

Medication cannot be administered or dispensed by staff. Campers must be able to take their own medication. However, staff can carry medications and help children remember to take them. Lead camp staff and the zoo’s full time security staff are EPI-pen trained.

allergies

If your child has any food-specific allergies, please pack your own snacks and lunches.

You child will be permitted to eat their home-packed snacks during snack time. Lead camp staff and the zoo’s full time security staff are EPI-pen trained.

Special needs

Please detail any physical, academic or social special needs your child has that our staff should be made aware of. Special needs will be accommodated to the best of our ability provided we know in advance of your camp week. If your child is not self-sufficient, you will be asked to provide a non-parent aide for the week of camp.

Registration for all camps will be processed on a first come, first served basis. Full payment is required for registration. The zoo accepts Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover cards. Checks made payable to Oregon Zoo are accepted only with mailed or hand delivered registrations.

Registering online at oregonzoo.org/camps is the best and fastest way to register. The website will indicate in real time how many spaces are available in each camp and you will receive immediate email confirmation of your registration.

Hard copies may also be printed at oregonzoo.org/camps. Please complete one form for each child. Hard copy registration forms can be

Phone registration is not available.

Camp does not Change from week to week. We do not recommend multiple weeks of camp. One exception is children entering 1st grade where there are two options that are designed to be different experiences. For additional camp experiences, consider enrolling in one or more Discovery Days.

Tuition assistance Thanks to the JFR Foundation and their funders, some need-based tuition assistance is available. To receive an application, please call 503-220-2781 before registering for camp. Online registration is not available for families seeking tuition assistance. Families are responsible for transportation to and from the zoo.

refunds, minus a 10% administrative fee, will be made only if your cancellation is received before May 30, 2016. After May 30, 75% refunds will be given if cancellation is made at least five working days before the start of the camp session. No partial refunds will be given for missed camp days.
